Kochi: High court administration has sought a report from the principal sessions court, Ernakulam, on the delay in completing the trial in the 2017 actor abduction and sexual assault case.
The district judicial registrar of the high court, in response to a petition filed by M R Ajayan of North Paravur, Ernakulam, requested the report from the trial court and informed the petitioner of the action on Aug 8. Road accidents claim 5,975 lives in state in six months of 2025

Mysuru: In the first six months of 2025, as many as 5,975 people died in road accidents across the state. Karnataka recorded 21,937 accidents in this time frame, and as many as 27,456 people were injured in these accidents. According to the data shared by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, in response to a question raised by MLC KS Naveen, in the past five and a half years, 60,115 people died in 2.13 lakh road accidents in the state. In Mysuru district alone, 1,730 accidents were reported from Jan 1 and June 30. A total of 329 people lost their lives and 1,998 persons were injured. The highest number of deaths in this time period was reported from Bengaluru (390), followed by Tumakuru (367). According to MLC Naveen, Karnataka has the biggest road network in the country. "The money collected for road safety awareness is wasted on post-accidental interventions and ineffective awareness campaigns. Tamil Nadu govt was able to bring down road accidents through an effective awareness campaign and interventions a few years ago. But in Karnataka, we failed to bring down the accidents," he said. Every road accident has a long-lasting impact, and causes a huge loss for the SGDP," he explained. Lakshman SG, a road safety activist said that the need of the hour is more enforcement drives during night, and early morning hours. "Drunk driving on the state and national highways are more, hence vigilance outside the city limits is required to make our roads safe," he said. Sexual harassment: Kerala actor detained

Chennai: A Malayalam movie actor, Minu Kurian alias Minu Munir, was detained by Thirumangalam all-women police, on charges of introducing a 16-year-old girl to four men at a lodge in Anna Nagar 10 years ago. The girl, now 26 years old and married, recently lodged a formal complaint in Kerala. She said that in 2014, during a school holiday, her mother sent her to Chennai with Minu Kurian, who was her relative. The latter took the girl to a hotel in Anna Nagar and introduced her to four people, discussing film opportunities. They sexually harassed her, the complaint said. The girl protested and left the hotel but did not report the incident at the time due to fear. The complaint was lodged in 2024 at Muvattupuzha police station in Ernakulam. Since the incident occurred in Anna Nagar, the case was transferred to Thirumangalam all-women police station. Inspector Subbulakshmi and her team travelled to Kerala and brought Minu Kurian to Chennai for questioning. 119 voters in one house! Cong alleges ‘vote theft'

Nagpur: The Congress unit in Ghugus has alleged sweeping irregularities in the electoral rolls of Chandrapur assembly constituency, claiming the anomalies amounted to an orchestrated attempt at rigging. The party has claimed that 119 voters spanning multiple caste and religious backgrounds are registered from one single location — house No. 350 in Chemical ward of Ghugus — owned by one Sachin Bandurkar. Party functionaries who visited the address said the property was vacant "for a long time." Ghugus unit chief of the Congress Raju Reddy said the home is roughly 600 square feet, calling the entry of voters from that place "implausible by any measure." Further scrutiny of the voter lists, Reddy said, turned up addresses with "zero" house numbers and several entries showing more than 100 voters at a single location. In Pipri village, nearly 100 voters are shown as residing under one household. "If the entire Chandrapur assembly voters' list is closely scrutinised, over 1,000 such locations — used for registering bogus voters — are likely to surface," Reddy claimed. —Vaibhav Ganjapure & Mazhar Ali Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
