Road accidents claim 5,975 lives in state in six months of 2025

Time of India10 hours ago
Mysuru: In the first six months of 2025, as many as 5,975 people died in road accidents across the state. Karnataka recorded 21,937 accidents in this time frame, and as many as 27,456 people were injured in these accidents.
According to the data shared by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, in response to a question raised by MLC KS Naveen, in the past five and a half years, 60,115 people died in 2.13 lakh road accidents in the state.
In Mysuru district alone, 1,730 accidents were reported from Jan 1 and June 30. A total of 329 people lost their lives and 1,998 persons were injured. The highest number of deaths in this time period was reported from Bengaluru (390), followed by Tumakuru (367).
According to MLC Naveen, Karnataka has the biggest road network in the country. "The money collected for road safety awareness is wasted on post-accidental interventions and ineffective awareness campaigns. Tamil Nadu govt was able to bring down road accidents through an effective awareness campaign and interventions a few years ago. But in Karnataka, we failed to bring down the accidents," he said.
"The police check for drunk drivers only within the city limits.

On the national highways, where a large number of accidents are reported, no such drive is carried out. Every road accident has a long-lasting impact, and causes a huge loss for the SGDP," he explained.
Lakshman SG, a road safety activist said that the need of the hour is more enforcement drives during night, and early morning hours. "Drunk driving on the state and national highways are more, hence vigilance outside the city limits is required to make our roads safe," he said.

Major attack on I-Day thwarted in Tripura as police arrest 2 with explosives

Agartala, Aug 15 (PTI) A major attack on Independence Day was thwarted in Tripura as two persons were arrested with explosives, police said on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, a vehicle was intercepted at Vanghmun in North Tripura on Thursday evening, they said. Two suspected members of the Tripura United National Force (TUNF), a newly-formed outfit, were arrested from the vehicle with 14 electric detonators and neogel explosives, SP Avinash Kumar Rai told PTI. Those arrested were identified as Dhananjoy Reang of Katlichhera in Assam and Sadai Nanda Reang of Kasko in Damchhera in North Tripura, he said. 'Preliminary enquiry suggests they had hatched a conspiracy to destabilise the state, with intent to kill police personnel, damage police vehicles, snatch arms and ammunition in the run up to Independence Day celebrations to grab the attention of the public," Rai said. 'The swift operation averted a major security incident," he said. PTI PS SOM view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 09:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Serbia protest: Anti-government unrest escalates for third night of clashes — see video

At least 42 police officers, including 26 in Belgrade, were injured after a Clash erupted between rival groups of protesters in Serbia, as months of anti-governmental demonstrations boiled over into street violence for a second night, Tass news agency reported. A wave of anti-corruption protests has gripped Serbia since November, following the collapse of the Novi Sad railway station roof that killed 16 people, a tragedy widely blamed on entrenched corruption. Protesters gathered again in several cities across Serbia late on Wednesday, mainly in response to an attack by ruling party supporters on demonstrators in the town of Vrbas, about 160 km north of the capital, Belgrade. For the second night running, large groups of pro-government supporters, most wearing masks, confronted protesters. The two groups hurled bottles, stones and fireworks at each other. Police arrested nearly 50 people across the country. The worst violence was reported in parts of Belgrade and Novi Sad, where the protest movement first began. One man, later identified as a military police officer, fired a pistol into the air as protesters approached the ruling party's offices in Novi Sad, causing panic, as per Guardian. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Footage also appeared to show supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party launching fireworks at protesters gathered outside the party's headquarters there. Police intervened with teargas, and stun grenades could also be heard. Frustrated with government inaction, protesters demanded an investigation into the Novi Sad tragedy and piled pressure on the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, to call early elections. Over the past nine months, thousands of mostly peaceful, student-led demonstrations have been held, some attracting hundreds of thousands. This week's violence, however, marked a significant escalation and indicated the increasing strain on Vucic's populist government, in power for 13 years. Since June 28, when about 140,000 demonstrators gathered in Belgrade, the government has responded with an 'intensifying crackdown' on activists, according to a statement by UN human rights experts released earlier this month. Protesters and those linked to the movement had faced a 'troubling pattern of repression' including excessive police force, intimidation and arbitrary arrest, the experts said. Vucic has remained defiant, repeatedly rejecting calls for early elections and denouncing the demonstrations as part of a foreign plot to overthrow him. After the Novi Sad shooting incident, officials confirmed the man was a member of a special military police unit usually tasked with protecting government ministers, Guardian reported. He had fired his weapon while 'on a routine assignment when attacked by about 100 people', officials said. The officer told journalists on Thursday: 'I used my firearm and fired a shot into the air in a safe direction. At that moment, the attackers scattered.' Footage widely shared online showed a man wearing a black T-shirt and no clear military insignia pointing a pistol into the air near protesters. Military officials said that seven members of the same military police unit had been injured while on duty to 'protect a specific person', but gave no further details. Student protesters accused the police of protecting pro-government supporters while doing little to stop the attacks on their own gatherings. 'The authorities tried to provoke a civil war last night,' the students wrote on their official Instagram page. They announced further protests for Thursday night. Vucic, who visited pro-government encampments overnight, denied his supporters had started the violence. 'No one attacked them anywhere,' he said of the anti-government protesters, speaking at a late-night press conference. 'They went everywhere to attack those who think differently.' While the protests have so far led to the resignation of the prime minister and the collapse of his cabinet, Vucic remains at the helm of a reshuffled government.

‘Non-application of mind': What Supreme Court observed while cancelling Kannada actor Darshan's bail; pulls up Karnataka HC for giving ‘acquittal order to accused'

BENGALURU: Cancelling the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan and his six aides in the Renukaswamy murder case, the Supreme Court Thursday observed that the order of the Karnataka high court depicted "non-application of the mind". The apex court noted that courts are not expected to render findings on the merits of the case at the bail stage. On Dec 13, 2024, the high court single bench judge Justice S Vishwajith Shetty granted regular bail to Darshan (accused number 2), Pavithra Gowda (accused no 1) along with other accused - R Nagaraju, Anu Kumar alias Anu, Lakshman M, Jagadeesh alias Jagga and Pradoosh S Rao - on grounds of non-furnishing of a memo for reasons of arrest as per the mandate of CrPC, several inconsistencies in statements of witnesses, etc. The state govt challenged the verdict. Now, after 244 days, the Supreme Court reversed the order. The bench, in the 66-page order, stated: "In the present case, the high court failed to properly evaluate the nature of allegations, involving premeditated murder and conspiracy, attracting Section 302 of IPC read with Section 120B IPC; the chain of circumstantial evidence, including CCTV footage, call records and forensic report showing a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence (e.g., by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo disposal of blood-stained clothes and vehicle cleaning); and the incriminating role of A2 (Darshan), who was in constant touch with A1 (Pavithra Gowda) and other co-accused before and after the incident, and who facilitated the conspiracy and cover-up. On the other hand, it simply recorded that A2 (Darshan) had 'no direct role' and there was 'no prima facie case', without discussing or analysing the incriminating material on record. This amounts to non-application of mind and renders the order unsustainable in law." By treating Darshan's stature as a mitigating factor, the high court committed a "manifest perversity" in the exercise of its discretion, thereby warranting cancellation of bail. "A2 is not a common undertrial. He enjoys celebrity status, mass following, political clout and financial muscle. His conduct inside jail - including recorded instances of VIP treatment, violations of jail rules and registered FIRs for misuse of facilities - reflects his capacity to defy the system even while in custody. If a person can subvert the prison system, the risk of interference with evidence, threatening or influencing witnesses and tampering with the course of justice is both real and imminent," the top court observed. Misconduct & influence Moreover, Darshan's immediate return to social events sharing the stage with prosecution witnesses, and continued influence over police witnesses, despite being on bail, establish that his liberty is a threat to the integrity of the proceedings, the court noted. "Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system. Accordingly, the accused's antecedents, influence, jail misconduct, and the seriousness of the charges against him make him unfit for bail," the SC stated. The apex court noted that on a cumulative analysis, it is evident that the high court suffers from serious legal infirmities. The order fails to record any special or cogent reasons for granting bail in a case involving charges under Sections 302, 120B and 34 of IPC. Instead, it reflects a mechanical exercise of discretion, marked by significant omissions of legally relevant facts. Moreover, the high court undertook an extensive examination of witness statements at the pre-trial stage, highlighting alleged contradictions and delays - issues that are inherently matters for the trial court to assess through cross-examination. The trial court alone is the appropriate forum to evaluate the credibility and reliability of witnesses, the SC observed.
