The Falcon 9 rocket used for this mission was not a newcomer to the skies. SpaceX confirmed that the first-stage booster was flying its fifth mission, having previously launched CRS-32, NROL-69, GPS III-7, and another Starlink deployment. Once its primary task of lifting the payload into low-Earth orbit was complete, the booster executed a successful landing on the SpaceX drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
This routine yet remarkable display of reusability continues to demonstrate the economic and environmental efficiency of SpaceX's design. Each recovered booster reduces the cost of subsequent missions and supports SpaceX's long-term vision of sustainable space travel and interplanetary missions.
A decade after failure, SpaceX looks ahead

On this day in 2015, a Falcon 9 rocket carrying over 5,000 pounds of cargo aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule for NASA broke apart just over two minutes into flight. The explosion was a major setback at the time, but it became a pivotal learning moment that shaped the company's future approach to reliability and design improvements.
This latest launch occurred under the watch of newly appointed commander Col. Brian Chatman, who now leads Space Launch Delta 45 and oversees operations at Patrick Space Force Base and the broader Eastern Range. BENGALURU: The 12-metre diameter unfurlable giant radar antenna reflector on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, has completely unfurled 17 days after the July 30 launch from the second launch pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Terming it as a giant radar measuring 39 feet, NASA said it is a critical part of the five-year long NISAR mission. NASA explained that the antenna reflector is an essential component of the satellite's hardware. Weighing about 142 pounds (64 kilograms), the reflector features a cylindrical frame made of 123 composite struts and a gold-plated wire mesh. On August 9, the satellite's 9-metre boom – which had been tucked close to its main body – started unfolding one joint at a time until it was fully extended about four days later. The antenna reflector assembly is mounted at the end of the boom. Then, on August 15, small explosive bolts that held the reflector assembly in place were fired, enabling the antenna to begin a process called the 'bloom' — its unfurling by the release of tension stored in its flexible frame while stowed like an umbrella. Subsequent activation of motors and cables then pulled the antenna into its final, locked position. ISRO said this is one of the milestones for NASA-JPL and ISRO that has been achieved. The scientific tasks of the $ 1.5 billion NISAR mission are scheduled to commence 90 days after the satellite was launched on July 30. These 90 days are being dedicated to commissioning and preparing NISAR for science operations and other activities, including calibrations and initial checks. One of them was stationing the radar antenna reflector and checking its functioning.

As he boarded his flight his India, Shukla shared a picture of himself with a wide grin on face. He posted in X, "As I sit on the plane to come back to India I have a mix of emotions running through my heart." "I feel sad leaving a fantastic group of people behind who were my friends and family for the past one year during this mission. I am also excited about meeting all my friends, family and everyone in the country for the first time post mission," Shukla said. "I guess this is what life is - everything all at once. Having received incredible love and support from everyone during and after the mission, I can't wait to come back to India to share my experiences with all of you," the Indian astronaut said. "Goodbyes are hard but we need to keep moving in life," Shuka wrote while recalling his Axion-4 colleague's mantra: "the only constant in spaceflight is change". Shukla ended his post by saying, "I guess at the end of the day -"Yun hi chala chal rahi - jeevan gaadi hai samay pahiya." Shubhanshu Shukla, a 39-year-old fighter pilot and the second Indian ever to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma, had also chosen 'Yun Hi Chala Chal' from the 2004 film 'Swades' for his big day – the launch of Axiom-4 mission. Shukla's choice had then struck an emotional chord with many. The Axiom-4 crew launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on June 25 and returned to Earth on July 15, marking another milestone for India's presence in space. Shukl returned to India early Sunday, August 17. Shukla, selected by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was the pilot of the mission . The mission, conducted in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, was aimed at gaining practical experience for India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. According to the ISRO, Shukla carried out multiple experiments aboard the ISS and the Space Shuttle, making significant contributions to India's space research. The learnings from Shukla's mission will directly support India's Gaganyaan project, which will begin with an unmanned flight later this year, followed by two more unmanned missions. Eventually, an Indian astronaut will be sent into space for 2-7 days aboard the Gaganyaan spacecraft. The Axiom-4 mission also highlighted growing India-US space cooperation. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US, ISRO and NASA signed an agreement enabling an Indian astronaut to travel to the ISS under a US mission.

Addressing the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025) said India was developing its own space station and noted that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla had returned from a space mission. "Our Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the space station. In the coming days, he is returning to India," Mr. Modi had said. Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on 15 July. Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) — Mr. Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 18-day mission.
