'Blow to BJP's politics of revenge': TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Court's directive on MGNREGA
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 18 (ANI): TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said on Wednesday that the Calcutta High Court's order today to restart MGNREGA in Bengal is a 'blow to the BJP's politics of revenge' and said that the Court's directive today is a 'step' toward restoring justice.

In a post on X, Banerjee said on Wednesday, 'The Calcutta High Court's order today to restart MGNREGA in Bengal is a blow to the BJP's politics of revenge. Unable to accept the people's mandate in 2021, the BANGLA BIRODHI BJP froze MGNREGA funds and choked off rural employment. This wasn't governance - It was revenge and retribution. The Court's directive today to resume the scheme from August 1, 2025 is a step toward restoring justice.

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre to resume disbursal of MGNREGA funds in West Bengal from August 1, while allowing the Union government to set necessary safeguards to prevent corruption.
The matter will come up for further hearing after August 15.
Between 2022-23 and 2025-26, Bengal was supposed to receive allocations. From 2016 to the next six years, West Bengal was allocated 50,593 crore under the 100 Days Work Scheme (MGNREGA). Allegations of irregularities surfaced in works amounting to only 9.20 crore, against which action was also taken.
All related documents and records have been submitted to the Ministry of Rural Development.
The court highlighted that the 100-day work scheme is a long-term, centrally funded project where money is directly transferred to workers' bank accounts. It stressed the importance of resuming the scheme in the public interest
A division bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam observed that while instances of fund misuse had been proven in four districts, the suspension of the entire scheme for three years was unjustifiable.
BJP leader Amit Malviya welcomed the HC Verdict calling it a huge blow to the Mamata Banerjee government.

Since the Act itself hasn't been scrapped, the benefits must reach the poor -- and the Court has ensured that they will. This is a tight slap on TMC's corruption-ridden governance. The poor of Bengal will now get what is rightfully theirs. But make no mistake -- Mamata Banerjee will do everything to stall its implementation... because she cannot tolerate a system she cannot manipulate,' he posted on X.
The Trinamool Congress also welcomed the verdict claiming that it vindicates the party's stand.

Committee says no to funds for wall at SGPGIMS nursery school provisionally handed over to NGO
A committee has rejected the move to spend a proposed ₹48 lakh on carrying out repairs and raising a boundary wall at the three-decade-old nursery school on the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) campus. The rejection came at a meeting of the recommendatory committee led by additional director Kritika Sharma on Tuesday. Despite the proposal being turned down, people familiar with the matter claimed minor works like painting and internal repairs have already been carried out, raising concerns about procedural integrity and fund utilisation. The school has already been provisionally handed over to the Amethi based NGO Rajiv Smriti Shiksha Evam Seva Sansthan, named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Though the NGO has no known experience in early childhood education, it has been given the green light to begin groundwork for registration, infrastructure, and staffing ahead of the academic session. The PGI governing body had earlier declined to run the nursery school, citing its unwillingness to spend institutional funds on a non-core activity. Yet, barely weeks after the provisional handover, the administration was ready to invest public resources in upgrading the nursery's infrastructure for the NGO's use, those in the know of things claimed. 'This double standard is hard to ignore,' said an official familiar with the development. 'On one hand, the institute says it doesn't want to fund the school directly. On the other hand, it's dipping into its civil works budget to improve infrastructure for an NGO whose operational role hasn't even been finalized, thanks to the committee which refused to spend money,' an insider said. Critics are questioning the timing and choice of the NGO, which is based in Amethi and carries the name of a Congress former prime minister, under the BJP-led state government. The organisation's only known credential is a rural postgraduate college, with no documented experience in pre-primary education. When contacted, SGPGIMS joint director (administration), Jaideep Singh Ghuman confirmed that only interim, provisional approval had been granted. 'The building will continue to be maintained by PGI so that the fees can be kept in check. If the NGO is found underperforming, it will be removed from the project,' Ghuman said.

42 PC BC Quota: Jagruthi threatens to file mass nominations in local body polls
Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi President and BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Wednesday said that if the state government fails to implement 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections, her organisation would stall the election process by filing hundreds of nominations in every village across the state as a form of protest. Addressing a press conference here at her residence on Wednesday, Kavitha criticized Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for failing to raise the BC reservation bill issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite having visited Delhi numerous times. She sarcastically remarked that Revanth could earn a Guinness World Record for the most visits to Delhi without achieving any results. MLC Kavitha alleged that the Chief Minister was not genuinely committed to securing approval for the BC Bill. Kavitha ridiculed the BJP's plan to organize a 'Telangana Vikasit Yatra' in support of the BC Bill. She stated that unless the BJP clearly supports the BC Bill, people will not trust their political moves, regardless of how many rallies they organize. BJP MLA files petitions to quash criminal cases; HC issues notices
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court single bench of Justice Kunuru Lakshman on Wednesday adjudicated three criminal petitions filed by Venkataramana Reddy Katipally, MLA (BJP) from Kamareddy district, seeking directions to quash three criminal cases registered against him and others. The court issued notices to the complainants. The judge dispensed with appearance of the MLA before the lower court and adjourned the petitions to July 10 for further hearing. The petitioner sought direction to quash proceedings in the cases registered for not adhering to orders of the police, who were performing duty. On February 6, 2023, the MLA and party activists participated in 'vanta varpu' protest before Kamareddy municipal office; on February 7 he participated in 'Bathukamma' programme, thereby creating hurdles in duty of the police. The cases are pending before the Special Judicial Magistrate of First Class for Trial of MPs and MLAs cases, Hyderabad. The judge heard the petitions filed by Reddy seeking directions to quash proceedings in CRLP.7386 of 2025, in CC 322 of 2024, CRLP.7387 of 2025 and in CC 321, criminal petition 7389 of 2025, in CC 318 of 2024 for offences under Sections 143 86341 r/w 34 of IPC.
