Kishan Reddy inspects Gandhi Hospital; takes stock of facilities
Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy recently visited Gandhi Hospital, the largest government hospital in the Secunderabad parliamentary constituency, which is represented by him.
Addressing the media on Monday after his visit, the Union Minister inquired about the facilities available to patients and gathered information from the superintendent regarding various services and arrangements. His visit comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directive that government hospitals across all constituencies be inspected, particularly in light of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases. He emphasized the importance of hospital staff remaining vigilant and reinforcing COVID-19 protocols for the public.
During his inspection of different departments at Gandhi Hospital, Kishan Reddy learned about the various facilities available. He underscored the continuous development of necessary treatments and facilities, especially given the high number of patients. He stressed the urgent requirement to fill the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) positions at the hospital, as new departments have been created. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, patients receive cards linked to their Aadhaar numbers. These cards enable them to access treatment not only at Gandhi Hospital but also at other healthcare facilities.
Kishan Reddy noted, 'During the COVID-19 pandemic, two oxygen plants were established at the hospital on the Prime Minister's orders, and they are still operational.' He stressed on further developing Gandhi Hospital and improving its facilities in the future.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is closely monitoring a fresh rise in global Covid-19 cases, driven largely by a new variant - Nimbus (NB.1.8.1). First identified in January 2025, this sub-variant of Omicron is now spreading rapidly across several countries. Cases in the US and UK According to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), the NB.1.8.1 variant has been detected in at least 13 US states, including California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. In the UK, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported a 10% jump in hospital admissions, with 947 patients admitted in the week ending May 31. Designated as NB.1.8.1, the Nimbus strain is a descendant of Omicron. WHO has listed it among six variants under close observation. Symptoms: What to Watch For The symptoms are similar to other Omicron sub-variants. Dr Ankita Baidya, HOD and Consultant - Infectious Diseases at Manipal Hospital Dwarka, told NDTV: "It is not necessary that they are going to give you a deadly disease." "This time we see a sense of loss of taste and smell along with normal viral-like symptoms like fever, cough, and cold, and other flu-like symptoms like sore throat and running nose. Headache and body ache is also noted." Is Nimbus Dangerous? The WHO, in its latest risk assessment, said the global public health risk from NB.1.8.1 remains "low". Current vaccines are expected to remain effective against both symptomatic and severe disease from this variant. Between April 21 and 27, Nimbus accounted for 10.7% of globally sequenced cases, with 518 sequences from 22 countries. Dr Baidya added: "Nimbus has been a fast-spreading strain since January 2025 and this variation has been noticed that though it's spreading fast among people it's not that deadlier as such, causing mild to moderate disease only." She also flagged another variant Besides Nimbus, another variant that has also caused concern among people is XFG, nicknamed "Stratus". It is not currently designated for monitoring by the WHO. "Stratus is right now again under scrutiny that it's also spreading fast but if we compare the number of cases that we have seen with Nimbus strain after sequencing identified as Nimbus strain, the status cases are comparatively less," Dr Baidya said. "But yes, these two variants are currently the most circulating variant and right now Nimbus is also under monitoring according to WHO, seeing how the pattern of disease and its pattern of spread is being studied simultaneously," she added.

India's Covid cases below 7,000
New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) For the third consecutive day, India has recorded a decline in Covid-19 cases, bringing much-needed relief amid ongoing concerns about the spread of the new variant. According to the data available from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, active cases across the country have fallen below 7,000, with a reduction of 428 cases in the past 24 hours. The total active cases now stand at 6,836, compared to previous days. On Monday, the country saw a decline of 119 cases. One death was reported from Maharashtra. The deceased, a 44 years old female was suffering from chronic liver cirrhosis post bariatric surgery with Covid-19, as per the Ministry. On the Covid cases, statewise, Kerala has experienced the largest decrease, with 261 fewer cases in the last 24 hours, bringing its active cases to 1,659. Other states reporting notable declines include Gujarat with 185 fewer cases (active cases at 1,248), Delhi with 94 fewer (active cases at 555), Maharashtra with 28 fewer (active cases at 512), and Andhra Pradesh with 18 fewer. Smaller reductions were observed in Sikkim, Assam, Telangana, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Goa. The States that reported increase in cases were Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Manipur and Punjab. The current active case load reflects positive trends across the country, indicating a slowdown in the spread of Covid-19. However, many health experts believe that the actual cases may be on the higher side since the virus has mild impact and people are not going for a test.

Heads of institutions have been directed to monitor the health of students and staff, isolate symptomatic students during exams, and suspend affected classes for sanitisation if cases rise. Experts advise targeted boosters Health experts have advised against a mass Covid-19 booster drive, recommending instead a focused approach for high-risk groups such as the elderly, immunocompromised, and those with chronic illnesses. Authorities continue to stress Covid-appropriate behaviour—masking, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowds. The Centre has urged states and UTs to stay alert, while doctors emphasise distinguishing Covid-19 from other seasonal viruses with similar symptoms.
