KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- United States-based e-hailing company inDrive remains confident of reaching 40,000 active drivers by year-end and affirms that its Malaysian expansion will not be jeopardised by the e-hailing vehicle permit (EVP) and public service vehicle (PSV)-related issues.
InDrive Malaysia country lead Govin Kumaar Panirsheeluam said the Land Public Transport Agency's (APAD) decision to allow inDrive to continue operations under a three-month monitoring period does not impact its overall operations in the country, and inDrive remains compliant with the regulations.
'We are close to the target of 40,000 (drivers), and we will remain steadfast in engaging with the regular stakeholders, (including) the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and APAD, in this matter. So we do not foresee any issues,' he told a media conference held to explain its operating status and future plans.
InDrive Asia Pacific director Mark Tolley affirmed that Malaysia is one of its core markets, adding that the decision to set up its regional hub in Kuala Lumpur reflected the company's commitment and belief in the brand's continued growth in the country, despite recent regulatory issues.
'We have strengthened our internal processes, and we have taken the lead by modifying our platform -- by adding a layer of verification in the (inDrive) platform where we make sure that all the documentation provided by the drivers is verified correctly, and make sure that all the information provided is correct,' he said.
Earlier, inDrive officially received confirmation from the MOT and APAD to continue operations in Malaysia, following the conclusion of a review process.
InDrive is also committed to ensuring that all drivers on its platform are required to possess valid EVP and PSV licenses, as well as e-hailing insurance, and must pass document verification before being allowed to operate.
The ride-hailing company has since implemented enhanced internal checks and is working closely with APAD to strengthen its compliance systems.
Since entering Malaysia in 2021, inDrive has expanded its footprint from the Klang Valley to Penang and Johor Bahru.

Ringgit closes lower against US dollar amid US tariffs, 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit closed lower against the US dollar on Friday as the dollar strengthened following new tariffs imposed by the United States on its trading partners, alongside developments related to the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). At 6 pm, the local note fell to 4.2750/2815 versus the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2650/2730. The US announced today that it is imposing a reduced 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian imports. The tariffs take effect seven days after 12:01 am on August 1, with goods already in transit granted a seven-day grace period to ease the immediate impact on supply chains. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that despite this positive development, traders remained cautious, and the weakness of the ringgit was somewhat mitigated by the news of the tariff reduction. He said that the reciprocal tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysia means that the impact would be minimised from the previous tariff rates of 25 per cent. "There could also be an opportunity for Malaysia to continue to discuss and negotiate with the US, and along the way, the country could get an improved deal. This could be ringgit-positive in the medium term,' Mohd Afzanizam told Bernama. He emphasised that the 13MP is anticipated to have a positive impact on the ringgit in the mid to long term. Under the 13MP, development expenditure has been increased to RM430 billion, which is expected to boost domestic demand and encourage investment activities, ultimately supporting Malaysia's gross domestic product growth. The 13MP was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on July 31. It aims to drive sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors. Of the RM430 billion allocation, Anwar said more than half, or RM227 billion, will be channelled to the economic sector as the main pillar of the country's growth. Meanwhile, at the close, the ringgit ended higher against major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8407/8452 from 2.8443/8498 at the close on Thursday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6208/6293 from 5.6426/6532, and gained against the euro to 4.8752/8826 from 4.8766/8857 previously. The ringgit was mixed against regional peers. It improved against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.8/259.4 from yesterday's 259.1/259.7 and edged higher versus the Thai baht to 13.0058/0319 from 13.0448/0753. The local note fell against the Philippine peso to 7.35/7.36 from 7.31/7.33 and weakened against the Singapore dollar to 3.2907/2960 from 3.2889/2953. - Bernama

Inari, Sanan jointly acquire Lumileds International for RM1.03bil

KUALA LUMPUR: Inari Amertron Bhd and Sanan Optoelectronics Co Ltd have jointly acquired 100 per cent equity interest in Lumileds Holding BV (Lumileds International) and its 11 Asian and European subsidiary companies for an enterprise value of US$239 million or equivalent to RM1.03 billion. Inari said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia that the company together with Sanan today entered into a share purchase agreement (SPA) with Dutch-based Lumileds Subholding BV for the proposed acquisition. Lumileds International was incorporated on Oct 30, 2014 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and is a globally recognised leader in the LED industry, specialising in the production and sales of mid-to-high-end LED products. "The proposed joint acquisition will strengthen Inari group's existing captive business strategy while enabling the company to expand and enhance its current product portfolio. "This strategic move will allow Inari group to diversify its product offerings and customer base, thereby creating additional revenue and earnings streams," it said. Inari had also entered into collaboration agreement (CA) and shareholders' agreement (SHA) with Sanan for the purpose of regulating the respective rights and obligations in Lumileds International and the relationship with one another upon completion of the proposed joint acquisition. It said a special purpose vehicle will be incorporated in Hong Kong (HK SPV) and co-owned by Sanan (74.5 per cent) and Inari (25.5 per cent), either directly or indirectly through their respective wholly owned subsidiaries, and the HK SPV will undertake the proposed joint acquisition. In addition to the capital contribution towards the payment of the enterprise value, Inari and Sanan have agreed to inject a further estimated US$41 million (RM176.3 million) into HK SPV and/or Lumileds International for working capital purposes. This brings the total investment outlay for the proposed joint acquisition and estimated working capital to US$280 million (RM1.2 billion).

Malaysia insists on JAKIM halal standards for US imports

KUALA LUMPUR: Halal products imported from the US must adhere to Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) standards, affirmed Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. He clarified that while trade facilitation agreements were reached, halal certification integrity remains non-negotiable. 'What we have agreed with the US is to facilitate the process of importing halal products into Malaysia, but not to compromise on the halal standards,' he stated during a press conference. The remarks followed the US decision to reduce tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. Tengku Zafrul dismissed rumours of relaxed halal requirements, reiterating the government's unwavering stance. 'The government will not budge from our stance on this issue. So we hope that no party gives a misleading impression,' he added. - Bernama
