Grand National runner Celebre d'Allen died with severe respiratory infection

The Guardian10-04-2025
A post-mortem examination of Celebre d'Allen, who died on Monday evening having collapsed on the run-in during the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, found that while his 'exercise-associated episode' did not lead directly to the 13-year-old's death, the gelding's immune system had been severely compromised, probably by over-exertion in the race, and he died as the result of a severe bacterial respiratory infection which had not been present in blood tests taken on Saturday morning.
The post-mortem, which was carried out at Rossdales, the leading veterinary practice in Newmarket, concludes that Celebre d'Allen contracted pleuropneumonia after Saturday's race, while 'the subsequent onset of sepsis or endotoxaemia [the release of harmful substances into the bloodstream from bacteria was] likely to have been a key factor in the cause of death'.
The report also found that 'bloods taken on Monday indicated a severely compromised immune system. These indications had not been present in the bloods taken on the day of the race. This indicates that this issue emerged subsequent to the race and the exercise-associated episode.
'The heart pathology found no issues which are likely to be significant in the death of the horse.'
The conclusion appears to explain why Celebre d'Allen had appeared to be recovering from his collapse on Sunday, before his condition suddenly deteriorated on Monday evening.
Celebre D'Allen was the oldest runner in Saturday's race but held a narrow lead over the third-last before fading quickly after the second-last. He collapsed shortly after jumping the final fence.

Michael Nolan, the gelding's jockey, was subsequently suspended for 10 days by the Aintree stewards for 'continuing in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give and was clearly losing ground after the second-last fence.'
The circumstances surrounding all race-related fatalities are reviewed in detail by the British Horseracing Authority, while the Grand National, the most famous and popular race of the year, is also the subject of a separate annual review by the regulator.

Ayr boss Scott Brown tells squad 'stake your claim for a United jersey'

Ayr were able to name just four outfield subs during Saturday's Premier Sports Cup defeat at Partick. Scott Brown has challenged his squad players to grab a jersey amidst the club's injury crisis. ‌ Ayr were able to name just four outfield subs during Saturday's Premier Sports Cup defeat at Partick. ‌ Brown is battling an early season pile-up in his treatment room with key players absent. ‌ But he insists United cannot feel sorry for themselves and must tackle the problem head on. He said: 'This is where other boys have to look at the opportunity and grab it. 'We never wanted to be in this situation – particularly so early on in the season. 'But we cannot change it. The injuries are what they are and we have to deal with them. 'If you're one of the lads coming in, you look at this as a chance to make the jersey yours.' ‌ Scott McMann missed the Firhill clash through illness and Ayr hope he can recover in time for Saturday's league trip to Morton. Kevin Holt will be monitored this week as he also bids to make his return. But Ayr suffered further injury woes at Partick with Shaun Want pulling his hamstring and Jude Bonnar straining his knee. ‌ They join Jamie Murphy and long term absentees Ben Dempsey and Anton Dowds on the crock list. Brown said: 'We'll never use the injuries as an excuse. They're part and parcel of football. 'We've been missing big players but we still have experience out on that pitch. ‌ 'The lads cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves. 'Maybe there was a bit of that against Thistle, I don't know, but it came down to basics like desire to go and win headers and second balls. We didn't have enough of it.' Stuart Bannigan, who missed most of pre-season, was able to play an hour at Firhill. ‌ Brown said: 'It was good to get those minutes into Banzo and he will come on for it.' Ethan Walker is another who returns on Saturday after missing the Thistle game through suspension.

Willie Mullins and son Patrick humbled by 17-year-old jockey who wins thousands inflicting shock defeat on first ride

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WILLIE MULLINS and son Patrick were humbled by an unknown 17-year-old jockey who won thousands on his first ever ride - then said he was going to retire. School pupil Jamie Martin turned over Mullins' 2-5 hotshot Highland Realm in a Tramore bumper last Friday. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 They've won the Grand National together - but Willie Mullins and son Patrick were humbled by an unknown 17-year-old jockey Credit: PA 2 Jamie Martin couldn't believe he had got the better of racing's most powerful trainer Mullins had won the race for the past six years and his Grand National-winning son was looking to make it a magnificent seven. But Martin, who was on 10-1 Alaskan View, had other ideas. Trained by his granddad, owned by his brother - who didn't want him in the saddle - and led up his dad, it was a true family affair. And it ended up being worth a few bob too. Alaskan View was always doing enough to win and saw off the Mullins runner by half a length, landing a £5,000 cheque in the process. Rachael Blackmore and Frankie Dettori were among those liking the video of Jamie's interview afterwards. The amateur jockey said he would retire after making it one win from one ride. But his composure in the saddle suggested a big career could be ahead. In a brilliant clip, he said: "I'm just so grateful to have the likes of my father and grandfather to give me the opportunity. "My brother didn't want me on the horse, but my Dad had his way. "I thought I was dreaming for a second. "I was talking to a few of the lads inside and I thought I was going to be making the running, but there was a bit of competition for the lead. "I was tanking along so I let Alaskan View go off in front. "She travelled along beautifully and heard Patrick coming near, but my horse lengthened out unreal. "I thought I was going to fall off near the end but I made it! "I looked across and said to Patrick 'Did I win or not?' "The plan was if I won this I'd retire with a 100 per cent strike rate but I think I'll have to keep on going!" Ron Wood's selections Nap: Pergola (4.21, Windsor) 1pt win @ SP with Tote ⭐⭐⭐ Next best: Blue Anthem (7.00, Windsor) 1pt win @ SP with Tote ⭐⭐⭐ Others: Pianoforte (7.15, Ayr) 1pt win @ SPwith Tote ⭐⭐⭐ Kelpie Grey (7.15, Ayr) 1pt win @ SP with Tote ⭐⭐⭐ Tote guarantee ensures you will always get at least SP (starting price) on win bets – and if the Tote pool dividend is higher, you'll be paid at those odds instead. This William Haggas-trained daughter of Wootton Bassett may not have appreciated rain-eased ground when an unplaced favourite at Sandown last time, but conditions will be fast now and she won the time before at Epsom. Our nap selection is up in trip, with stamina in her pedigree, so is not fully exposed and there ought to be better to come from her. Tom Marquand is in the saddle. 2.05 Newmarket – Grey Horse handicap (Class 4, 6f; ITV4 & Racing TV) ADDISON GREY has won two of his four starts and most recently finished a good third in a competitive handicap at Chepstow. Clive Cox's runner should benefit from having promising apprentice Jack Nicholls taking over in the saddle and taking off 7lb. 7.00, Windsor – Class 4 Handicap (6f; Sky Sports Racing) First the negative. The draw for BLUE ANTHEM, in stall 8 of eight, may not be ideal. However, there are reasons to think he is one to buy into. For starters, he is trained by George Boughey and will be ridden by Billy Loughnane, a good combination. And this Starspangledbanner gelding comes into this race fresh off a seven-week break, seemingly a positive considering he won off a five-month break in February and again after 80 days away in May. The three-year-old was a beaten favorite at Yarmouth on his most recent start, but that came off just a 10-day absence. His overall profile is progressive, while his pedigree also points to the potential for more, seeing as he is a half-brother out of Blues Sister to Group 1-winning sprinter Kind Of Blue. Check out more free bets from the UK's best betting sites, reviewed by our experts 7.15, Ayr – Class 4 Handicap (6f; Racing TV) This is a decent little sprint handicap and there are two horses who appeal, starting with PIANOFORTE. He showed useful form for Andrew Balding, notably winning a Bath novice when last seen in June. This four-year-old Land Force gelding is now with Julie Camacho and could prove well bought at 21,000gn – compared with €120,000 as a yearling. The other pick is KELPIE GREY. He is useful over 7f to 1m but has plenty of speed . This Havana Grey gelding, now a five-year-old, has the potential to advance his form now down in distance. When is the next big horse racing festival? The four-day Ebor Festival at York begins on Wednesday. The headline race, the Ebor, is a valuable 1m 6f handicap on Saturday. There are also four Group 1 contests, the showpiece being the 1m 2f Juddmonte International on the opening day. The other Group 1s are the 1m 4f Yorkshire Oaks (Thursday), the 5f Nunthorpe Stakes (Friday) and the 7f City of York Stakes (Saturday), which is upgraded to top-level status for the first time. What does nap mean? Nap is a word used in betting circles to describe a horse that a tipster thinks has a particularly strong chance of winning. Many horse racing tipsters pick out a nap of the day, which is their favoured selection from all the races across the different meetings. The term nap derives from the French card game Napoleon. When players of this game thought they had a particularly strong hand, they would shout 'Napoleon'.
