German rolls past rivals in madcap English cheese chase – DW – 05/26/2025

A Munich man has tasted victory for a second time in one of England's quirkiest competitive pastimes. Tom Kopke says he risked everything to emerge as champion in the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling race.
It was hard cheese for local competitors in one of England's most curious sporting traditions, as Bavarian Tom Kopke emerged victorious for the second year running.
The unofficial Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake in the English county of Gloucestershire drew thousands of spectators and scores of competitors to chase a speeding wheel of dairy product down a steep grassy slope.
'I worked for this — It's my cheese'
Dry weather made the 50 gradient incline more treacherous than usual, with racers risking bumps bruises — and even worse — to catch up with the coveted 3.6-kilogram (8-pound) Double Gloucester cheese.
And of the rivals who tumbled and rolled headlong down the hill to claim the prestigious first-race prize, 23-year-old Kopke was first across the finish line. His prize? The cheese itself.
"It was crazy. This year was different," adding: "Last year the hill was muddy and this year it was dry and dangerous and people got injured. I shut off my brain and went for it."
Munich resident Kopke's love of the cheese-rolling contest hasn't soured since his last year's event, with the YouTuber determined to hang on to his dairy dash crown.
"All the people at the top said they were going to steal my title but this is mine," he said. "I worked for this. I risked my life for this. It's my cheese. Back to back."
Several races are run at each annual cheese-rolling, but the first men's race is the most prestigious, garnering the most media attention, featuring seasoned competitors and past champions.
The women's race was won by 20-year-old Ava Sender Logan who was running in support of the Refugee Community Kitchen — a group that helps displaced people in northern France and homeless communities in London and Edinburgh.
Is cheese rolling dangerous?
While there are other cheese-rolling traditions in Britain, the event at Cooper's Hill is the most famous and frenetic.
The event is no picnic, with 23-time champion Chris Anderson having suffered torn calf muscles, sprained ankles and bruised kidneys.
Though the official version was scrapped in 2010 over safety concerns, fans have kept the tradition alive with a rebel race — now a chaotic but beloved annual fixture. The cheese rolls 200 yards downhill, and competitors do their best to keep up.
The races, which date back centuries and likely began as a springtime ritual, have grown into a global curiosity.
After 15,000 turned up in 2009, organizers pulled the plug — but the locals and thrill-seekers kept it rolling, with police now observing rather than intervening.

Leeds Beat Everton For Perfect Start To Premier League Return

Lukas Nmecha's controversial late penalty gave Leeds lift-off on their return to the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton at a jubilant Elland Road on Monday. The match appeared to be meandering towards a stalemate until James Tarkowski was harshly adjudged to have handled Anton Stach's driven shot. Nmecha had only been on the field for six minutes of his Leeds debut but confidently fired past Jordan Pickford in the 84th minute. "It's not a penalty," said Tarkowski. "I was pretty convinced it was going to get overturned (by VAR). "A bizarre moment and it cost us the point in the end." Everton handed a debut to Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish in the second half, but the Toffees were left to rue not posing anything of an attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes. Leeds are aiming to avoid the trend of the past two seasons when all three promoted clubs have been relegated. Daniel Farke has also struggled previously with the step up to the English top-flight during two attempts as Norwich manager. But after Sunderland beat West Ham 3-0 on Saturday, two of the three promoted sides have won on the opening weekend for only the third time in the Premier League era. Farke's men stormed to promotion by winning the Championship title with 100 points last season and Leeds started in confident fashion. The home side were dominant in the opening half with 12 shots on goal but only once made Pickford work when the England goalkeeper blocked from Joel Piroe. Grealish's introduction coincided with Everton's best spell of the game. Lucas Perri, one of Leeds' eight summer signings, made an impressive save at his near post to turn behind Carlos Alcaraz's powerful strike before Jake O'Brien headed the resulting corner over. Just as Leeds looked like they might have to hold on for a point, they were gifted the chance for a perfect start with all three. There was little Tarkowski could do as his left arm was down by his side as it blocked Stach's effort. Nmecha stayed calm amid the furore as the German international found the bottom corner. "For a newly-promoted side it (Elland Road) has to become a fortress," said Farke. "It's great to see the joy and the pride in their eyes. It's great to give the supporters, who are so emotional and care so much about their club, something to cheer." Tarkowski had Everton's only chance to make amends with an equaliser but he headed over.

'Skibidi', 'delulu' make their way into Cambridge Dictionary – DW – 08/18/2025

The latest additions to the world's largest online dictionary, among 6,000 others, show how much internet culture is changing the English language. The words "skibidi", "delulu", and "tradwife" are coming to a dictionary near you. These are among the latest Cambridge Dictionary additions of more than 6,000 new words and phrases over the past year, the publisher of the world's largest online dictionary said on Monday. These new inductions into the dictionary reflect how shifting online culture is impacting everyday speech. Among the new entries are Gen Z and Gen Alpha terms such as "skibidi," a nonsense word popularized by the viral YouTube series Skibidi Toilet, "delulu," short for delusional, and "tradwife," describing women who embrace traditional gender roles on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Other additions include "lewk," meaning a distinctive fashion look, "inspo," short for inspiration, and "mouse jiggler," implying someone pretending to labor while working remotely. Rising environmental concerns led to the inclusion of "forever chemical," referring to man-made substances that stay in the environment for years. Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme manager at the Cambridge Dictionary, told AFP news agency that it is unusual to see words like 'skibidi' and 'delulu' make their entry into the dictionary. "We only add words where we think they'll have staying power," he said. "Internet culture is changing the English language, and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the Dictionary."

Bayern's Bundesliga Crown Up For Grabs After Rocky Summer

Pretenders to the crown Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and cup holders Stuttgart are priming themselves for a run at Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title after a frustrating summer transfer window for the Bavarian giants. Bayern travel to Stuttgart on Saturday for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup -- the season opener which pits the defending league champions against the reigning German Cup victors. Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown. This summer, however, the 34-time league champions have not had everything go their own way. Efforts to lure Florian Wirtz away from Leverkusen fell flat, with the German footballer of the year opting rather for a move to the Premier League and Liverpool. Although Bayern secured attacker Luis Diaz from the English champions, they lost Thomas Mueller, Leroy Sane and Eric Dier on free transfers. Kingsley Coman is set for a move to Saudi Arabia, Mathys Tel made his Spurs loan permanent and efforts to sign Germany striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart have been rebuffed. Speaking with the Bundesliga website on Thursday, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the shifting sands across the league this summer made it hard to see who would be their main rivals. "We'll see who knocks at the top. For us, it will be important to go our own way. We can't influence what the others will do," Kimmich said. Kimmich nominated former side RB Leipzig to bounce back after a poor 2024/25 campaign, where they missed out on Europe for the first time in the top flight. The Saxon club have brought in several young talents including winger Johan Bakayoko and midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, in former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp's first summer transfer window as Red Bull global head of football. "Leipzig have a good team. Because Leipzig aren't in European competition, they'll be able to concentrate on the Bundesliga," Kimmich added. Leverkusen, Bayern's principal rival across the past two seasons, have undergone a clear-out this summer. Most of the main contributors to their stunning unbeaten 2023/24 league and cup double have moved on. Wirtz, along with wing-back Jeremie Frimpong have signed with Liverpool. Midfield conductor Granit Xhaka has also moved to the Premier League, while Germany defender Jonathan Tah has joined title rivals Bayern. The biggest loss of all, however, is coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard departing to join Real Madrid. His replacement, former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, will be looking to revive his own reputation while cobbling together a squad with several new arrivals. Impressive last season in finishing third, Eintracht Frankfurt are also rebuilding, having lost centre-forward Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool in July, just six months after winger Omar Marmoush moved to Manchester City. Quietly building under Bundesliga-winning coach Niko Kovac, Borussia Dortmund could again trouble old foes Bayern this term. Kovac took over the reins in January with Dortmund flailing but helped the club rise from 11th to fourth, picking up 22 of a possible 24 points to end the season. The addition of Jobe Bellingham will provide steel in midfield, while the only major loss is winger Jamie Gittens who moved to Chelsea, having struggled for game time under Kovac. Cup winners Stuttgart, who finished second ahead of Bayern in 2023/24, look set to continue troubling the big guns. Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor told AFP and other media on Thursday: "We have a very special team... we've got quality players in every position -- even some that people haven't heard of." Karazor said the key man is coach Sebastian Hoeness, who has taken Stuttgart from relegation battlers to cup winners and European football in just over two years at the helm. "An amazing, amazing coach. You can see his handwriting on everything the team does. From the moment he came in, the mindset of the team changed," the midfielder said. Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac has impressed since joining the club in January AFP
