Chhangur Baba, accused of running religious conversion racket, money laundering, send to five-day ED custody
Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin was remanded to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody on Monday by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Lucknow. The court was hearing a case related to a money laundering investigation against Chhangur and his associates linked to an alleged illegal conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, officials said. According to a PTI report, Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin alias Karimulla Shah has been in jail in the predicate offence case being investigated by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). The ED had applied to the court for his custody following which it was allowed a five-day remand of the accused till August 1, the officials said. He will be questioned in jail and his statement will be recorded under the PMLA, they added. Earlier this month, the federal agency had conducted searches at Chhangur's native place in Balrampur district and two locations in Mumbai. The ED had said that the accused had received funds worth ₹ 60 crore in 22 bank accounts, including 'large amounts' from abroad. The money-laundering case against Chhangur Baba stems from the ATS FIR filed at a police station in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021. Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin and Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. They are currently lodged in a jail. Chhangur Baba has been accused of being involved in a 'large-scale' conspiracy which includes religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds, and activities posing a potential threat to national security, as reported by PTI. The ED said, 'Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals.' 'He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing, and manipulating indiduals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes, and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religous conversion,' the probe agency added. The ED searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that the 'proceeds of crime' (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction in these properties. All the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering, the ED has said.

Punjab to implement drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9-12
Chandigarh, Jul 28 (PTI) The Punjab government will roll out a pioneering drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9 to 12 in all government schools. The move is part of the third phase of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" drive, Minister of School Education Harjot Singh Bains said here on Monday. Bains said Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will launch the statewide drug prevention curriculum on August 1 at Arniwala in Fazilka district. Giving details about the curriculum, Bains, according to a an official statement, further stated that 'this pioneering programme, created by the Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee-led organisation J-PAL South Asia, will empower around eight lakh students in Classes 9 to 12 with prevention-focused skills to combat substance abuse". 'The curriculum will consist of 35-minute sessions, held every fortnight for 27 weeks, and will feature a mix of engaging content, including documentaries, quizzes, posters, and interactive activities. These sessions will focus on key areas such as myth-busting, refusal strategies, and resisting peer pressure, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions," he said. Bains said that the drugs prevention programme will have a wide reach, covering 3,658 schools and engaging over 6,500 trained teachers to empower approximately eight lakh students from Classes 9 to 12. This comprehensive programme will ensure a significant impact on Punjab's education system, equipping students with essential skills to say no to substance abuse, he said. 'This initiative is grounded in evidence, developed with leading behavioural scientists, and evaluated through randomised trials conducted in 78 government schools in Amritsar and Tarn Taran during FY 2024-25," he said. These trials covered 9,600 students and, evaluated by J-PAL South Asia, yielded significant results. The trials demonstrated a marked improvement in addiction risk awareness, with 90 percent of students recognising the high risk of addiction from trying 'chitta' even once, compared to 69 percent in the control group, the minister added. 'Additionally, the trial successfully debunked myths about addiction, with the belief that addiction can be overcome by willpower alone dropping from 50 percent to 20 percent," Bains said. 'Punjab becomes the first state in India to implement a statewide, evidence-based drug prevention curriculum, while recognising that the battle against drugs begins from the classroom, not in police stations," he said. Meanwhile, the Education Minister shared the details about the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" campaign launched in March this year. He said that the state government has taken stringent actions, including putting over 23,000 drug peddlers behind bars, seizing their properties, and confiscating over 1,000 kg of heroin. These efforts demonstrate the government's dedication to tackling the drug menace and securing a brighter future for Punjab's youth, he added. NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday told the Lok Sabha that US Vice President JD Vance personally alerted Prime Minister Narendra Modi about a massive Pakistani attack just hours before it was launched on May 9. Addressing the special debate on Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar said, 'I'd like to inform the House that on May 9, Vice President JD Vance called the Prime Minister warning of a massive Pakistani attack expected in the next few hours. The Prime Minister, in his response, made it very clear that if such an attack occurred, it would be met with an appropriate response from our side. The attack did take place but was foiled by our armed forces. ' Jaishankar said the country witnessed a 'new normal' in its response to cross-border terrorism and that India's reply on May 10 was swift and devastating. 'Every member has seen satellite pictures of Pakistani airfields. You can see from the state of those airfields what was our answer,' he added. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. A major missile aimed at the Adampur airbase was among the threats, but India's air defence systems, including S-400 and Akash batteries, successfully intercepted them. Jaishankar said the Indian military's response included targeted strikes on Pakistani airbases, air defence units, command centres and radar sites. By May 10, under diplomatic pressure and facing heavy damage, Pakistan signalled its intent to halt the fighting. India, however, insisted that any request to cease hostilities must come via the official military channel. 'On the 10th of May, we received phone calls sharing the impression of other countries that Pakistan was ready to cease the fighting. Our position was, if Pakistan was ready, we needed to get this as a request from the Pakistani side through the DGMO channel. That is exactly how that request came,' Jaishankar said. He also rubbished claims that US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan or linked it to trade negotiations. 'At no stage in any conversation with the United States was there any linkage with trade and what was going on. Jaishankar also pointed out that Indian diplomacy helped secure overwhelming global support for Operation Sindoor. 'There are 193 nations in the United Nations, only three countries apart from Pakistan opposed Operation Sindoor,' he noted, adding that countries recognised India's right to defend itself. He laid out a five-point doctrine that now defines India's approach to cross-border terrorism: terrorists will not be treated as proxies; cross-border terrorism will be met with appropriate response; talks and terror cannot go hand in hand; India will not yield to nuclear blackmail; and blood and water cannot flow together. As part of the post-attack response, Jaishankar informed the House that the Indus Waters Treaty has been put in abeyance until Pakistan ends its support to terrorism. 'It was important to send a clear, strong and resolute message after the Pahalgam terror attack. Our red lines were crossed, and we had to make it very apparent that there would be serious consequences,' he said. India also launched a global diplomatic campaign to expose Pakistan's long-standing support for terrorism. 'Our task, from a diplomatic perspective, was to shape global understanding of the Pahalgam attack,' he said, adding that efforts were made to underline how the attack targeted Kashmir's economy and attempted to sow communal discord. Jaishankar's remarks came in response to Opposition criticism, especially from Congress' Gaurav Gogoi, who cited former US President Trump's claim of having mediated a ceasefire using trade as leverage. The External Affairs Minister countered this by citing diplomatic records and communications, asserting that India's position was consistent and based on military-to-military engagement, not third-party intervention.
