Grief counselors at NH middle school after student dies in crash with stolen delivery vehicle
Grief councilors are being made available at a New Hampshire middle school after a boy was killed and a girl was seriously injured after police said they crashed a car they stole from a delivery driver.
The youths have not been identified. Manchester School District Superintendent Jennifer Chmiel on Wednesday confirmed one of the students, the boy who died, was a student in the school district.
'We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students, and our thoughts are with those impacted by this motor vehicle accident,' Chmiel said in a statement.
Chmiel said additional resources are being made available at the Southside Middle School in Manchester.
'In addition to our school based counseling teams, we have brought in additional community resources and grief counselors that will be available at the school,' Chmiel said.
'We encourage parents and students to reach out to a member of the Southside team if you have any questions or would like to access these resources,' said Chmiel, who also provided additional resources about grief on the school's website.
Early Wednesday morning, around 12:50 a.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen motor vehicle in the area of 5 Clifford Ave., police said.
The victim, a food delivery driver, told officers he had briefly left his 2014 Toyota Corolla unattended. When he returned, the vehicle was gone.
About an hour later, officers spotted the Corolla in the area of Kenberma Street. The Corolla was traveling without headlights on. When police activated emergency lights and sirens, the driver behind the wheel drove away quickly.
Police pursued the Corolla and continued onto the highway, but stopped the chase after losing sight of the vehicle.
Around 2 a.m., state police found the car in the area of Route 101 westbound at the Kilton Road off-ramp in Bedford, where it had crashed.
The male driver, a juvenile, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A female passenger, also a juvenile, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries, Bedford police said. Her condition was not known on Wednesday.

‘Huge impact': Project starting Friday could delay Mass. Pike traffic for hours, official warns
A major construction project that kicks off Friday and lasts through the weekend could back up traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike for hours, a state transportation official warned drivers. Lane closures will be deployed on Interstate 90 in Newton and Weston starting at 9 p.m. on Friday to allow for the demolition of a bridge that runs over the MBTA railroad, according to MassDOT. 'What they'll be doing is demolishing the roof of that existing tunnel and replacing it with pre-fabricated bridge units. This will happen all over the next couple of days,' Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver told Boston 25 News. 'This is an approach we've used really successfully over the last few years, several of them on the Turnpike.' The impacted stretch of the Pike between Exits 123 and 125 will be reduced to just one lane of traffic in each direction through 5 a.m. on Monday. A zipper lane, similar to MassDOT's HOV lane, will be in place to move all traffic over to the eastbound side of the highway, according to Gulliver. Major traffic delays are anticipated during work hours. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the impacted areas and to seek alternate routes. 'If 100 percent of the traffic shows up, we've modeled that this would end up being two to three hours worth of delays getting through here,' Gulliver said. 'That's a huge, huge impact. So, we don't want to see come through here if you don't have to.' Drivers who need to access the Turnpike are urged to plan ahead using Mass511, MassDOT social media platforms, and navigational apps like Apple Maps, Waze, and Google Maps. 'We know it's going to impact a lot of people. We're asking people if they don't have to travel through the Newton/Weston area on the Turnpike to please avoid it,' Gulliver said. 'We know it's going to be congested.' Gulliver also warned drivers that residual traffic is expected to spill over onto secondary roads in and around the area. 'This is going to be a tough project to get through, regardless of where you're coming from,' Gulliver said. 'You're going to be seeing some congestion on any of those connected roadways.' Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area. MassDOT said that this work will additionally require a shutdown of MBTA Commuter Rail service on the Framingham/Worcester line between South Station and Framingham, and Amtrak service between Boston and Albany. Alternate busing will be provided. A second weekend of lane closures will later commence at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, June 23, Gulliver reminded drivers. Man attacked, shot on Chicago's South Side
A man was shot on Chicago's South Side early Friday morning, the Chicago Police Department said. Just before 4 a.m., Chicago police said a 40-year-old man was approached by another man in the 10800 block of South Eggleston Avenue. Police said the man who approached hit the 40-year-old in the back of the head with a gun. There was a physical fight before shots were fired at the 40-year-old man, police said. The victim was shot in the leg. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition. No arrests have been made. Area Two detectives are investigating.

Police: Huge crane tips over in Weymouth, causes significant property damage
A huge crane tipped over in Weymouth, leaving a huge mess that people are trying to clean up. According to police, the crane fell over in the parking lot by Legion Memorial Park, right over by the tennis courts. Police told Boston 25 that the operator had pulled into the parking lot to fix something on the crane when he forgot to set one of the stabilizers down before swinging the crane to the side, causing it to tip over. Police say that there is significant damage to the sidewalk and some minor damage to a fence. Weymouth Fire was also on the scene and have called in OSHA.
