Where did April Fools' come from? Here's the history, origin and some April Fools' Day deals

Yahoo01-04-2025

The day that some pranksters look forward to all year long is here. It's April Fools' Day!
April Fools' Day is an unofficial holiday centered around pulling pranks on your friends and family that falls on the first day of April each year. No one knows for certain how or where the holiday truly began, but there are some theories.
Another fun, lesser-known thing about April Fools' Day, is that it brings freebies with it. A few chain restaurants have some April Fools' Day-only deals this year. Do you dare to trust them?
Here's the history of April Fools' Day and which restaurants are running April Fools' Day price cuts instead of pranks today.
Yes! Today, Tuesday, April 1, isn't just the first of the month – it's April Fools' Day 2025.
Someone pull a fast one on you today? How April Fools' Day got started and why
According to the Encyclopedia of American Folklore, the exact origins of April Fools' Day are uncertain – it most likely comes from multiple sources.
April Fools' Day is most often attributed to France's switch from the Julian calendar, to the Gregorian calendar in the 1500s, according to The Library of Congress and the History Channel.
'In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1,' the History Channel says.
'People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called 'April fools.''
Another potential origin is a New Year's tradition from the Middle Ages called the 'Feast of Fools,' which predates France's switch to the Gregorian Calendar.
In medieval churches, hierarchy was inverted every New Year's Day and lower members of the clergy would swap duties with the higher-ranking priests and bishops. Outside of the church doors, chaotic celebrations would carry on. You might recognize this idea from Disney's 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' movie.
'Officially banned in the 15th century, the Feast of Fools had its origins 300 years before, in the 1100s, and continued as a tradition well into the 16th century,' Atlas Obscura says.
'It was memorialized in church documents condemning its excesses and in paintings depicting streets full of merry chaos. It appears in Victor Hugo's famous 19th century novel, 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' when Quasimodo is swept up in the festivities and crowned King of Fools.'
Another theory says that April Fools' Day could have gotten its start in ancient Rome, with Hilaria, which was a day of joy marking the end of an annual festival that honored the goddess Cybele.
These aren't the only April Fools' Day origin stories and legends, but they're among the most popular and well-known.

Former Disney star Christy Carlson Romano reveals shocking details about nearly losing her eye after being shot in face

Christy Carlson Romano is speaking out about nearly losing an eye after she was shot in the face four months ago. During an appearance on the upcoming June 10 episode of the 'Not a Damn Chance!' podcast, via a sneak peek by People magazine, the 41-year-old former Disney star recalled the terrifying incident while she was shooting clay pigeons with her husband, Brendan Rooney, for his birthday. Asked how it happened, Romano explained she was not 'at liberty to say specifics,' according to People. The actress previously revealed on Instagram that she was 'hit in five places,' including below her eye. Romano shared details for the first time about what transpired. 'It's a birdshot that got sprayed in my direction by another party, and essentially it was within 200 feet, which means really fast and hot,' she told hosts Neen Williams and Frankland Lee. 'They weren't malicious,' Romano clarified. 'It wasn't aggravated assault. It's what happened.' The 'Even Stevens' star then emphasized the importance of gun safety and described her initial response. 4 Christy Carlson Romano sits in the hospital after being shot in the face at a party in February, 2025. 'I feel very out of body about it. … It's pretty wild,' she said. 'I'm shocked, and what goes through my head immediately is, 'Oh that's dope, I just got shot.' And then I go, 'Oh now I'm gonna die,'' she said. 'I take a knee. My husband witnessed it and was like, 'Hey are you hit?' because I didn't scream. I didn't do anything. I was just out of body.' Romano recalled she had a knee-jerk reaction upon being shot that stemmed from her time on the third season of the FOX reality TV series 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.' 4 The actress previously revealed on Instagram that she was 'hit in five places,' including below her eye. Christy Carlson Romano/Instagram In the show, celebrity contestants take on grueling military exercises and challenges under the direction of ex-Special Forces operatives. Romano explained that the contestants were trained to give a thumbs-up to let their fellow cast members know that they were OK during the series' perilous challenges. The 'Kim Possible' alum recalled that, out of habit, she gave Rooney a thumbs-up immediately after she was shot. 'He was like, 'Oh, you're good.' And I was like, 'No I'm hit.' He goes, 'Oh s—,'' Romano recalled of her husband's reaction. She remembered that Rooney rushed to her aid and had to restrain himself from retaliating against the other party. 4 Christy Carlson Romano and Hillary Duff in a scene from 'Cadet Kelly.' ©Disney Channel/Courtesy Everett Collection 'So, he's running to me and making sure I'm OK, and he's fighting the urge to hurt the person … but he's been practicing stoicism recently, and there was something in him,' Romano recalled. 'He was immediately into action mode, evaluating me and ran to get the car. 'I felt this huge rush that I'd never felt before where I was starting to get really woozy. I think it was shock.' Romano told the hosts she didn't experience any pain initially and described the thoughts that were running through her head, including her fears her children might be affected. The actress shares daughters Isabella, 7, and Sofia, 5, with Rooney. 'I was covered in blood from my forehead … and I said three things. I was like, 'Am I gonna die? Who's gonna take care of the girls? Is my career over?'' she recalled. Romano explained that she came close to being blinded or killed. 'If my head would've been tilted in any other direction, I would have been blind in my right eye. Or if I had turned my head, I could have gotten hit in a softer side of my skull, and I would have potentially been dead,' Romano said. 'It's still in my eye,' she said of the pellets from the shotgun. 'I have a fragment still in my forehead, and I have a fragment still behind my eye, which is 1 millimeter away from blinding me.' Romano previously explained on Instagram that the lead fragment behind her eye had to remain in her face because removing it could leave her blind. 4 Christy Carlson Roman poses for a picture during a family trip to Disneyland in May 2025. Christy Carlson Romano/Instagram The shot fragment lodged in her skull will also remain in place because doctors said it will expedite her healing process. During her podcast interview, Romano told hosts she put on a brave face at first and was making jokes about her medical crisis after she arrived at the hospital. 'In retrospect, I was trying to be funny and not cry because I wanted the people around me to feel more calm so that they could take better care of me,' Romano said. The former Broadway star admitted that it has been difficult to accept she is a 'gunshot survivor.' Clay pigeon shooting is an outdoor sport in which upside-down circular disks made of limestone and pitch used as targets are propelled into the air by machines called traps. Shooters use shotguns, with each shot projecting hundreds of small lead balls to hit the clay pigeons. The sport is typically not considered dangerous as long as safety measures are follow.

Amid Concerns About Inside The NBA's Future On ESPN, An Insider Dropped Claims About What The Network Is Planning

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: TNT The NBA on TNT is officially over, and with that comes the end of Inside the NBA's 36-year run on the network. Luckily, the show will return with its four main hosts, as ESPN struck a deal to air it, starting this fall. However, there have still been some concerns regarding this new era for the show. Some appear worried that the Disney-owned sports company will change up the show too much and take away its essence in the process. Amid that chatter, a source is dropping claims about what's being planned for the sports TV staple. Advertisement It goes without saying that Inside has a unique flow, one that's fueled by conversations headed up by its A+ personalities like Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley. Of course, the series also makes use of excellent segments and provides the hosts with opportunities to participate in hilarious hijinks. (Barkley's even been pranked with a bucket of water on air.) As fans await the new season, an insider tells Front Office Sports that viewers shouldn't expect much to change: Some of the speculation's just nuts. ESPN has wanted Barkley and this show for 20 years. Now that they've got it, why would they change it? That source does pose an interesting question, considering Inside the NBA has been quite successful. Still, it's not uncommon for a massive organization to want to change up a TV program after acquiring it in order for it to better fit the brand. Sports journalist Bill Simmons was specifically concerned that ESPN would mess up Inside by tailoring the show to its sometimes commercial-heavy timeslots. Yet, if this insider is to be believed, the show will still air normally and the quartet of pundits will have an ample amount of time to shine. When the former TNT staple returns to the air this fall as part of the 2025 TV schedule, co-hosts Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley will reportedly still have a long postgame as they've always had. While they'll also still participate in pregame and halftime coverage as well, they'll also have live coverage for other major events. The reported plan is for the group to provide coverage for Christmas Day games, the NBA Finals, the Conference Finals, opening week and more, per FOS. All of that coverage may sound good for fans, but it might not gel with the hopes of at least one of the show's hosts. Charles Barkley, who rescinded his retirement from broadcasting in August 2024 before the ESPN deal was made, has been candid about waiting for more specifics about his work schedule. Barkley has been adamant about not wanting to work more frequently than he already is. While Barkley's TV career will continue for the time being, it's easy to get the feeling that execs are going to want to fill him in sooner rather than later. Advertisement So far, though, it would seem that the bigwigs at ESPN are seeking to maintain creative continuity, as they prepare for Inside the NBA's arrival. Company president Jimmy Pitaro spoke out and doubled down on the network's commitment to keeping the hosts together. As a longtime viewer of the program, I can understand the concerns that some of my fellow fans may have. But, until I see anything, I'm staying optimistic that this TV staple won't change too much. Let's hope Inside the NBA isn't negatively impacted by shifting networks as reported. And, if everything works out as hoped for, I'd imagine Charles Barkley won't mind going 'back to kissing ass.'
