Former Disney star Christy Carlson Romano reveals shocking details about nearly losing her eye after being shot in face

New York Post08-06-2025
Christy Carlson Romano is speaking out about nearly losing an eye after she was shot in the face four months ago.
During an appearance on the upcoming June 10 episode of the 'Not a Damn Chance!' podcast, via a sneak peek by People magazine, the 41-year-old former Disney star recalled the terrifying incident while she was shooting clay pigeons with her husband, Brendan Rooney, for his birthday.
Asked how it happened, Romano explained she was not 'at liberty to say specifics,' according to People.
The actress previously revealed on Instagram that she was 'hit in five places,' including below her eye.
Romano shared details for the first time about what transpired.
'It's a birdshot that got sprayed in my direction by another party, and essentially it was within 200 feet, which means really fast and hot,' she told hosts Neen Williams and Frankland Lee.
'They weren't malicious,' Romano clarified. 'It wasn't aggravated assault. It's what happened.'
The 'Even Stevens' star then emphasized the importance of gun safety and described her initial response.

'I feel very out of body about it. … It's pretty wild,' she said. 'I'm shocked, and what goes through my head immediately is, 'Oh that's dope, I just got shot.' And then I go, 'Oh now I'm gonna die,'' she said.
'I take a knee. My husband witnessed it and was like, 'Hey are you hit?' because I didn't scream. I didn't do anything. I was just out of body.'
Romano recalled she had a knee-jerk reaction upon being shot that stemmed from her time on the third season of the FOX reality TV series 'Special Forces: World's Toughest Test.'

In the show, celebrity contestants take on grueling military exercises and challenges under the direction of ex-Special Forces operatives.
Romano explained that the contestants were trained to give a thumbs-up to let their fellow cast members know that they were OK during the series' perilous challenges.
The 'Kim Possible' alum recalled that, out of habit, she gave Rooney a thumbs-up immediately after she was shot.
'He was like, 'Oh, you're good.' And I was like, 'No I'm hit.' He goes, 'Oh s—,'' Romano recalled of her husband's reaction. She remembered that Rooney rushed to her aid and had to restrain himself from retaliating against the other party.

'So, he's running to me and making sure I'm OK, and he's fighting the urge to hurt the person … but he's been practicing stoicism recently, and there was something in him,' Romano recalled.
'He was immediately into action mode, evaluating me and ran to get the car.
'I felt this huge rush that I'd never felt before where I was starting to get really woozy. I think it was shock.'
Romano told the hosts she didn't experience any pain initially and described the thoughts that were running through her head, including her fears her children might be affected. The actress shares daughters Isabella, 7, and Sofia, 5, with Rooney.
'I was covered in blood from my forehead … and I said three things. I was like, 'Am I gonna die? Who's gonna take care of the girls? Is my career over?'' she recalled.
Romano explained that she came close to being blinded or killed.
'If my head would've been tilted in any other direction, I would have been blind in my right eye. Or if I had turned my head, I could have gotten hit in a softer side of my skull, and I would have potentially been dead,' Romano said.
'It's still in my eye,' she said of the pellets from the shotgun.
'I have a fragment still in my forehead, and I have a fragment still behind my eye, which is 1 millimeter away from blinding me.'
Romano previously explained on Instagram that the lead fragment behind her eye had to remain in her face because removing it could leave her blind.

The shot fragment lodged in her skull will also remain in place because doctors said it will expedite her healing process.
During her podcast interview, Romano told hosts she put on a brave face at first and was making jokes about her medical crisis after she arrived at the hospital.
'In retrospect, I was trying to be funny and not cry because I wanted the people around me to feel more calm so that they could take better care of me,' Romano said.
The former Broadway star admitted that it has been difficult to accept she is a 'gunshot survivor.'
Clay pigeon shooting is an outdoor sport in which upside-down circular disks made of limestone and pitch used as targets are propelled into the air by machines called traps. Shooters use shotguns, with each shot projecting hundreds of small lead balls to hit the clay pigeons.
The sport is typically not considered dangerous as long as safety measures are follow.

You Could Be Streaming the Oscars on YouTube or Netflix by 2029

Will we be watching 2029's Academy Awards on YouTube? That's one possibility as streaming and broadcast giants position themselves to potentially take over as the streaming/broadcast home of the Oscars after ABC's contract ends in 2028. According to a Bloomberg newsletter, Google's YouTube is now in the running as a potential Oscars suitor, joining companies such as Netflix and NBCUniversal as a possible new home for the awards. Like Netflix, YouTube has been increasingly become interested in hosting major live events such as the NFL Sunday Ticket, which moved there in 2023. Of course, it's also possible that ABC, which is owned by Disney, will renew its contract. The network has aired the Oscars since 1976. But reports since earlier this year have suggested that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been exploring other options, either to find a new place for the Oscars or as a negotiating ploy. While it's still a big live event, the awards show has had diminishing ratings over the last 10 years, though the 2025 ceremony had the highest viewership in five years. The Oscars were shown on Hulu as well as ABC.

Denzel Washington Says ‘Who Cares' When Asked if He Worries About Being Canceled: ‘You Can't Be Canceled if You Haven't Signed Up'

Denzel Washington has his own take on the cancel culture debate. While discussing his latest film, 'Highest 2 Lowest,' with Complex News, the actor posed the question, 'What does that mean — to be canceled?' when asked if he ever worries about being 'canceled.' More from Variety New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week Box Office: 'Nobody 2' Picks Up $1.3 Million in Thursday Previews Denzel Washington Says 'I'm Not Interested in Oscars' and 'Don't Care' About Them: 'They Won't Do Me a Bit of Good' When I Die When told by the interviewer, Jillian Hardeman-Webb, 'it means you lose public support,' Washington replied, 'Who cares?' Sitting with frequent collaborator and 'Highest 2 Lowest' director Spike Lee, Washington continued, 'What made public support so important to begin with?' Hardeman-Webb replied that 'followers now are currency,' to which Washington answered with a emboldened response. 'I don't care who's following who,' he said. 'You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well.' He added, 'You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up.' While laughing and stretching his arms, he told Lee, 'Don't get me started. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it.' Having a similar attitude, Lee added, 'I could care less.' This isn't the first time Washington has expressed how he's unaffected by public opinion. In a conversation with journalist Jake Hamilton on 'Jake's Takes,' the Oscar winner shared he does not care about winning Academy Awards. 'I don't do it for the Oscars,' he said. 'I really don't care about that kind of stuff.' Washington continued, 'I've been at this a long time, and there's times when I've won, shouldn't have won, didn't win, should have won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in the Oscars. People say, 'Well, where do you keep it?' I say, 'Next to the other one.'' 'I'm not bragging. I'm just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain't going to do me a bit of good,' he finished. Source Debunks Kylie Jenner, Timothée Chalamet Breakup Rumors

It's ben a moment since Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet have been in the same place at the same time, and naturally some corners of the internet have jumped to the conclusion that they've broken up. Especially since Timothée wasn't at Kylie's recent birthday party! But apparently these two are still going strong—they're just busy working on opposite sides of the world from each other. "They haven't seen each other for a few weeks only because Timothée's been filming Dune in a studio in Budapest, and Kylie's been working too," a source tells People, noting that "She visited him in July." The source adds that "even though Kylie has a private jet, the flight is still 12 hours. She's a mom and she works as well. She has a lot of responsibilities in LA. Timothée's schedule is grueling, with very little downtime." Despite the hectic schedules, the insider says "They're making it work though. They FaceTime most days. They miss each other and are totally fine." Timmy's schedule shows no signs of slowing down, and apparently he's heading to Jordan and Abu Dhabi to film. But a source previously told People that the couple are "used to this kind of schedule," that Kylie "will fly to see him when she can" while Dune is in production, and that "they're still very happy and just making it work."
