TN govt goes ahead with ‘Pa'-shaped seating in schools despite protest

CHENNAI: Despite opposition from various quarters, the School Education Department (SED) has gone ahead with implementing the semi-circle seating arrangement in government schools in TN.
In a circular issued on Saturday, the department had directed chief educational officers to instruct headmasters to arrange students in a semi-circular format (in the shape of Tamil letter 'Pa') based on classroom size and student strength. However, the move sparked backlash on social media, with concerns raised about potential health issues.
School Education director S Kannappan had told TNIE on Saturday evening that the department had put the plan on hold temporarily in the light of the ongoing discussions and a final decision would be made early this week.

'Lost 45 aircraft in 1965, 71 in 1971': BJP MP Nishikant Dubey in Lok Sabha

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nishikant Dubey was speaking in Hindi in Lok Sabha on Tuesday when there was a technical glitch in the translator system. Following this, DMK MPs requested him to speak in English. Dubey refused to do so, saying English is a foreign language. "...It would have been better if you had asked me to speak in Tamil or Bengali. English is a foreign language, and your insistence on it reflects your mindset. Someone spoke in Bengali for half an hour, yet Tamil Nadu MPs didn't object. You only have a problem with Hindi. Congress and its allies don't like North Indians or Hindi. If you keep promoting English, we'll end up becoming England," the BJP MP said, adding, "Hum phir se gulaam ho jayenge (We will become slaves again). .." Fortunately, the technical glitch was resolved after a few minutes, and Dubey was able to finish his speech. "India lost 45 aircraft in the 1965 war and 71 aircraft in the 1971 war. But we never made this an issue as we are nationalists," he said, accusing opposition of spreading falsehoods regarding India's losses in Operation Sindoor.

HC reserves orders on writers' plea on house allotment

Chennai: has reserved orders on pleas moved by writer and TN's first woman IPS officer, G Thilagavathy, and Tamil scholar Ilakkuvanar Maraimalai, challenging a state govt decision to reject their allotted house under 'Kanavu Illam' scheme. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The scheme was launched on late chief minister M Karunanidhi's 97th birth anniversary to honour Tamil scholars who were awarded the Gnana Peeth, Sahitya Akademi, and national or state-level literary awards with special house allotments. However, after the announcement of 10 beneficiaries under the scheme, govt declared that houses would not be allotted to persons who already own a house from TNHB. The writers challenged this and said it was clearly stated that the house was given as an honour to scholars, even if the recipient owned a house. "In 2022-23, among the 10 scholars selected under the scheme, Thilagavathy was first on the list as she was awarded the Sahitya award in 2005," counsel for the petitioner said. While the state allotted a house for her at Anna Nagar with a built-in flat area of 1,409sqft, the state modified the criteria in 2024. The awardees became ineligible to receive the allotment if they had already purchased a flat or plot from TNHB. This excluded her from the scheme, as she owns a house at Virugambakkam. Recording the submissions, Justice N Anand Venkatesh observed that he would pass an order making the scheme prospective and not retrospective so that the scholars already selected can get the allotment.

Writers, progressive thinkers oppose reduction of SSLC pass percentage in Karnataka

Writers, progressive thinkers, and educationists have opposed the reduction of the pass percentage in Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Karnataka from 35 to 33. Writers K. Marulasiddappa, S.G. Siddaramaiah; progressive thinkers K.S. Vimala, Babu Mathew, Janagere Venkataramaiah, Sripada Bhat, K.M. Vishwanath Marathur, educationists V.P. Niranjanaradhya, and others have written a letter to the Chief Minister expressing concern that the quality of education will decline due to this decision of the School Education Department. They also urged the State government for withdrawal of the recent gazette notification in this regard. According to the new rules, the students will pass SSLC exam if they get a minimum of 30 marks out of 100 in a subject. This means that if a student scores 20 out of 20 in the internal exam, and only 10 out of 80 in the external exam, the student will be declared as pass. 'Many students who scored 20 out of 20 in the internals during the last examination, did not get the minimum marks in the external exam. We don't understand the quality index in place here, where the benchmark of true quality of learning is an external test, and scoring just 10 marks in it is enough,' they argued.
