Cards stack up 11 singles to sink Marlins
The Cardinals, who go for the three-game sweep on Wednesday, amassed 22 hits and 15 runs in the first two games of the series.
Michael McGreevy (5-2) earned Tuesday's win, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) with five strikeouts in six innings.
Riley O'Brien earned his second save by pitching a scoreless ninth. After missing with his first eight pitches to bring the tying run to the plate, he struck out the next two and got a groundout to end the game.
Edward Cabrera (6-7) took the loss, lasting just 4 1/3 innings while allowing season-highs in hits (11) and runs (six). He fanned six and walked one.
Cabrera got in trouble on the game's fourth pitch as Lars Nootbaar singled, then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Herrera's broken-bat bloop single. Herrera got behind 0-2 in the at-bat, but he fouled off three pitches and worked a full count before delivering.
Herrera came through again in the second against a 98-mph fastball -- lining a two-run, opposite-field single to right for a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals made it 4-0 in the third on Pedro Pages' RBI single. That was St. Louis' eighth single in the first three innings.
Miami got on the board in the fourth as Xavier Edwards singled and rookie Jakob Marsee smacked an opposite-field triple to left. The next batter, Agustin Ramirez, hit a comebacker to McGreevey, who threw to third in an attempt to get Marsee. But the throw was wild, allowing Marsee to score.
The Cardinals got those two runs back in their next chance. Two more singles started the rally, and Masyn Winn scored on Ramirez's league-leading 12th passed ball. Nathan Church's sacrifice bunt made it 6-2, which represented the first RBI for Church in just his third MLB game.
Miami closed the deficit to 6-4 in the sixth as Edwards singled, Ramirez doubled and Otto Lopez stroked a two-run single past diving second baseman Thomas Saggese.
The Cardinals made it 7-4 in the seventh as Winn was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced on Ramirez's throwing error and scored on Saggese's sacrifice fly.

Emma Raducanu is 'totally invested' in tennis, Mark Petchey has said, as her former coach implored people to appreciate how much effort she puts into the sport. Raducanu, 22, hired Rafael Nadal's former coach Francisco Roig earlier this month after initially rekindling her relationship with Petchey ahead of the Miami Open in March. The British No 1 had experienced injuries and struggled for form since her fairytale US Open win in 2021 as a teenager but has shown signs of improvement this season by rising from 80th to 35th in the world rankings. 'Coaching Emma [Raducanu] was awesome,' Petchey, who also coached Raducanu in 2020, told OLBG. 'Everybody knows it was a very roundabout way that we got involved with each other in Miami. She was obviously in a slightly difficult spot, and I was there commentating, so I ended up being able to help her out. 'From my perspective, I hope people can really understand how much she loves tennis. 'She's totally invested in it. She watches it all the time. She practices as hard as anyone I know and has spent more time on the court, or as much time on the court, as everybody else. And obviously she's living a very different life. 'She's living a lot of her career in reverse and that's not been easy. Having set the bar so high so early on in your career every week you are measured not just by other people's expectations but also your own expectations. That is a good thing because it drives you to be as good as you can be. 'But on the other hand, it's difficult, because at times it can feel like you're not hitting the standard you want to because that's where your bar is at. From that perspective, her work ethic and her desire to be able to do what she did back in 2021 is as great as I remember it in 2020 when I first had a chance to work with her.' Raducanu hired Roig, a S panish coach who spent 17 years with Nadal, ahead of the Cincinnati Open and has already praised the 57-year-old's impact on her game in a short space of time. Because of Petchey's commitment to broadcasting, the working relationship with Raducanu was informal and the Briton says having Roig on a permanent basis will be more beneficial for her. 'The way we stopped working together was totally amicable,' Petchey, who works as a tennis commentator, added. 'My job at the start with her was going to be just Miami. Then obviously it became longer through to Wimbledon, and then obviously she had three days with Francis Roig, Rafael Nadal's former coach, after Wimbledon and that went well. 'But he couldn't start due to other commitments until Cincinnati. So, around the work stuff that I have, we stayed in contact, and I helped her up in Montreal as best I could. 'But eventually my commitments were going to be too much to be a lead person for her in that environment. I think it's really a great opportunity for her to work with somebody like Francisco who has worked with one of the best players of all time. 'To have time alone with Francisco, to work on the stuff is a golden opportunity for her and him to try to take her game to the next level where she's going to be able to win Grand Slams. 'I think they'll be great, I think they'll be a great partnership. I'm super happy for her and I'm super excited about her potential.' 'We never got to the stage where we discussed whether it would be a full-time role. 'But she knows where I am. She's always known where I am. Even since 2021, she's always known where I am. I'm not planning to change my number!' After losing in the first round of the US Open's mixed doubles event to Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Raducanu will find out who she faces in the first round of the women's singles at Flushing Meadows tomorrow.

JP Sears faces Giants as Padres get a second look at left-hander
August 20 - JP Sears gets a second chance to make a good impression on the San Diego Padres. Acquired from the Athletics on July 31 as part of the six-player blockbuster trade that involved closer Mason Miller and former San Diego top prospect Leo De Vries, Sears will start for the Padres Wednesday night when they continue their four-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants. Sears (7-10, 5.12 ERA) started his first game with San Diego on Aug. 4 at Arizona and struggled, suffering a 6-2 defeat as he was touched for 10 hits and five runs over five innings. The left-hander went down to Triple-A El Paso the next day and won his only outing for the Chihuahuas, scattering six hits and allowing two runs over five innings in a 9-7 game on Aug. 12 against Triple-A Reno. The Padres hope Sears will perform better in his second stint for two reasons: Petco Park's tendency to suppress offense and his career numbers against San Francisco. He's 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA in four career starts, striking out 26 batters over 24 2/3 innings. He fired six scoreless innings against them on July 4 in an 11-2 win. After a series-opening loss on Monday, San Diego evened the series Tuesday night with a 5-1 victory, getting two hits and an RBI each from Manny Machado and Ryan O'Hearn. It scored in four different innings, taking advantage of a variety of Giants mistakes that included errors, bases-filled walks and hit batters. "It was hugely important for us to get back into the win column," said O'Hearn of the Padres, who open play Wednesday two games behind the Los Angeles Dodges in the National League West but in wild-card position. The Giants played without shortstop Willy Adames, held out with right side soreness. Manager Bob Melvin said it wasn't easy to get him out of the lineup. "It was a bit of a fist fight to talk him out of it," Melvin said. "He wants to play." Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45) gets the start Wednesday night for San Francisco. He gave up five runs on five hits in three innings of the team's 7-6 loss Friday night against Tampa Bay. He did not figure into the decision.
