Though it was the fairytale wedding seen around the world, Princess Diana later said that her July 29, 1981 wedding day to Prince Charles was the 'worst day of my life.'
Diana—then Lady Diana Spencer before her marriage—tried to back out of the wedding numerous times, but was convinced otherwise, hoping that her relationship with Charles would improve after they exchanged vows, and that his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles would dissipate.
The night before their wedding at St. Paul's Cathedral, Charles allegedly told Diana that he didn't love her, and Diana confronted Charles about cufflinks he received from Camilla while on their honeymoon.A woman's wedding day should at least crack the top 10 list of the best days of her life, right? Or at least not be at the absolute bottom? The latter, unfortunately, was true for Princess Diana, who married Prince Charles on this day 44 years ago.
Charles and Diana's wedding at St. Paul's Cathedral in London almost didn't happen at all, according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward in her book My Mother and I. It was Diana's father, Earl Spencer, who helped convince her that she should go through with it after all following an incident that happened about a month before the wedding—her soon-to-be brother-in-law Prince Andrew's 21st birthday at Windsor Castle, when Diana (then Lady Diana Spencer) hoped to dance with her soon-to-be husband. Instead of dancing with Diana, Charles instead 'spent the entire evening dutifully working the room and making sure he spoke with as many people as possible,' according to Seward. (Ironically, Elton John—who would one day sing at Diana's 1997 funeral—was the entertainment that evening.)
Per an excerpt shared by People, Seward wrote that 'Diana was in despair. Her fiancé had been away in America for most of the previous week, yet he clearly had no desire to dance with her. Feeling emotionally drained, she threw herself into dancing frantically with one man after another—and finally just dancing by herself.'
After the party in June 1981, Diana made her way to her family's ancestral home, Althorp, in Northamptonshire by 5:30 a.m., feeling 'distraught, flustered, angry, and had no intention of ever going back,' Seward wrote. 'As far as Diana was concerned, the royal wedding was off.'
But when she told her father this, 'he was appalled,' Seward continued. 'After calming her down, he pointed out it would be an act of gross discourtesy to break off her engagement to the future king so close to the wedding. And, anyway, wasn't it what she'd always wanted? Didn't she remember him telling her that she should only marry a man she loved—and her form reply, 'That is what I'm doing'? Diana wasn't immediately convinced.'
Yet, after 'gusts of tears and spells of indecision,' Diana agreed that the wedding should go on: 'She couldn't deny that she still wanted to be the Princess of Wales,' Seward added. 'And, at 19, she was young enough to still believe in happy endings, despite what her instincts had told her on that terrible night.'
The hits kept coming, though. Charles allegedly told Diana the night before their wedding that he didn't love her, according to what a friend of Diana's said in ITV's 2020 documentary The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess, which focused on her now controversial interview on BBC's Panorama in 1995.
'One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding, Charles told her that he didn't love her,' Penny Thornton told the program. 'I think Charles didn't want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her, and it was devastating for Diana.'
'She didn't want to go through with the wedding at that point,' Thornton continued. 'She thought about not attending the wedding.'
She did, of course, ultimately marry Charles—but later called July 29, 1981 the 'worst day of my life.' A documentary, called Diana: In Her Own Words, used audio from a series of interviews she conducted in 1991 to tell the story of the People's Princess; ahead of her wedding, just like she'd spoken to her father about her reservations, she also did so with her two older sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.
'I went upstairs, had lunch with my sisters who were there, and I said, 'I can't marry him. I can't do this. This is absolutely unbelievable,'' Diana said. 'And they were wonderful and said, 'Well, bad luck, Duch. Your face is on the tea towel, so you're too late to chicken out.''
One of Diana's chief holdups? His relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, who was actually in attendance at their wedding. On their honeymoon, Diana confronted Charles about Camilla—specifically a pair of cufflinks Camilla had given Charles with two Cs entwined.
'So I said, 'Camilla gave you those, didn't she?'' Diana said. 'He said, 'Yes, so what's wrong? They're a present from a friend.' And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy.'
'And it was such a good idea, the two Cs,' she added. 'But it wasn't that clever.'
Diana told her biographer Andrew Morton that, on their wedding day, 'I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn't take my eyes off him. I just absolutely thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. He was going to look after me.'

Joanna Cassidy Celebrates 80th Birthday in Sexy Beach Shoot Weeks After Revealing Romance with Alan Hamel (Exclusive)

The actress posed for photos exclusive to PEOPLE, celebrating her 80th birthday, feeling wonderful and carefreeNEED TO KNOW Joanna Cassidy, the actress known for roles in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead and Blade Runner, celebrates her 80th birthday on Aug. 2 The actress tells PEOPLE about the milestone birthday, which comes on the heels of her exciting new relationship with Alan Hamel Cassidy and Hamel talk about getting older, staying in shape and what's next for the actress in the latest stage of her careerJoanna Cassidy is feeling fabulous at 80! The Blade Runner actress celebrates her 80th birthday on Aug. 2, sharing photos from a Malibu beach photoshoot marking the milestone. In a chat with PEOPLE about the special milestone, she admits she feels "no different than when I was 30, quite honestly." "Time is an illusion! I'm very aware of the fact that it's passing very quickly, but it's sort of nothing. I just say, 'Go day by day.' " Cassidy admits that she "can't say I'm excited about the number," but assures, "otherwise it's just another adventure, another decade." "I know I'll make it through beautifully and come out the other side of that one. Who knows what'll happen after that? Just a decade. I think that when I turned 50, that was sort of the hard one, but this is just icing on the cake. I feel like I'm 35 and I think I look pretty good." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Cassidy says that part of keeping herself young is nurturing her mind, body and spirit. "I think the most important thing that I do, which I've been learning how important it is, is to give back. I'm not on that trajectory anymore, where I have to accomplish things. The only things I have to accomplish are taking care of myself and working out and being a kind, loving person," she says. "My mind is still open to learning how to be a good person. And every time I find another instance where I can be that, I just feel better. I know that has to do with your DNA, your all-around cellular health." She continues, "I have animals. I love animals. I love to walk. I love to exercise. It's important to me to interact with people and hear them and listen and see what kind of exchange we can make. It was sort of miraculous to run into Alan. I hadn't even seen him in 30 years." Cassidy and boyfriend Alan Hamel made their unofficial debut as a couple earlier this summer. Hamel agrees that what brought them together was "a miracle." "We met over 50 years ago. Joanna was a guest on my show in Canada, and that was in the late '70s, I think. The next time I saw her, she was doing a major mini-series with Suzanne and Anthony Hopkins. And then I didn't see her again until a few months ago," he tells PEOPLE. "We connected, and I'm happy that we connected. She's a great woman. The thing is that she will help anybody to do anything. She's amazing that way," Hamel continues. Laughing, he adds, "I don't have that DNA. She does. It's amazing. It's admirable. Next to her, I feel like there's more I should be doing for the world." The two look forward to celebrating Joanna's birthday throughout August, getting outside and making memories together. "The aging process is great. People think that it's not, but it's great. You get a lot more out of each birthday, especially when you're celebrating after five years or 10 years," Hamel says. Cassidy is also looking for more out of her career. In addition to three projects already in the works, she's looking for the next big role, preferably an action-packed one. "Well, having been in the original Blade Runner, my sense of physicality [is important]. Before we did this interview, I just did a class that was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. I came back, and my legs were shaking. Everything's shaking on me. And so that's a really important part of my life, is to be in the gym and work out and push myself physically," she says. "I love to do that. And I want to be in another adventure movie. I want to be in a movie where I can show those attributes that I have. That's what I want to do." Hamel agrees, celebrating his partner as "perfect to be an action hero." "The reality is, she's taller than most women and in great physical condition," he says, adding to Cassidy, "You could probably do all your own stunts as well. And I think there's room for a female action hero out there." "Don't get me wrong, I played a lot of grannies too. I was a granny in Six Feet Under, and I enjoyed the heck out of that. I love to play women who are kind of badass emotionally and physically," she says. "I like it. I'd like to play Charlize Theron's mother. That's what I'd love to do." Katy Perry And Justin Trudeau's Relationship: Reports

There's a new report about Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau. The two made headlines earlier this week for being photographed grabbing dinner together at a Montreal restaurant. The Canadian ex-prime minister was then seen singing along in the crowd at Katy's Lifetimes tour. Earlier this year, reports emerged that Katy had split from fiancé Orlando Bloom after nine years together. Similarly, Justin was married to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years until their separation in 2023. A source now told People that Katy and Justin "are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes." 'She is traveling around the world, and he is figuring out his life now that he is no longer prime minister of Canada, but there is an attraction. They have a lot in common," the source continued, listing "music" and being "idealists." Both Katy and Justin also have children; Katy has a daughter and Justin has three kids. 'Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities,' the source added. Another source further said, '[The] timing seems good for them, although a romance is in very early stages." I suppose only time will tell...

Mom Accumulates More Than 30 Tattoos. Now She Says She Regrets Every Single One (Exclusive)

Alexa Locke got her first tattoo at 18 years oldNEED TO KNOW Alexa Locke first began admiring tattoos when she was around 16 So when she turned 18, getting her first tattoo felt like a natural next step Now, 20 years later, the Chico, Calif., resident estimates she has between 25 and 30 tattoos — not including a full sleeve on her left armAlexa Locke first began admiring tattoos at around 16, often noticing them on others and imagining what she might get one day. So when she turned 18, getting her first tattoo felt like a natural next step. Now, 20 years later, the Chico, Calif., resident estimates she has between 25 and 30 tattoos — not including a full sleeve on her left arm. Her ink primarily reflects two classic styles: traditional American and Japanese. But at 37, and now a mother, Locke says her perspective on her tattoos has changed dramatically. "I got the majority of my tattoos very quickly and far too young," Locke tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I started regretting them once I became a mother. The judgment and stereotypes around tattoos are still very strong, which is disheartening — but it's also reality. I hate how everyone's first impression of me is just that I'm a tattooed woman. I'm so much more than that." "Who I was 20 years ago is nowhere near the woman I am today. And when people look at me, they see her — not the person I am now," she continues. "The woman I am today is far more educated, mature and secure in herself. Yes, I hate my tattoos, but I've accepted them because they came from choices I made when I was younger. I understand that I did this to myself, and I understand why I'm judged for it. I don't see myself as a victim, this is simply one of the consequences of my actions." Locke says the social stigma surrounding tattoos has taken a toll. For instance, she's been overlooked for jobs and rejected on the spot simply because of her ink. "That's been a tough pill to swallow, especially knowing it's my own doing," she says. "I hate that everyone's first impression of me is that I'm a tattooed woman. I'm so much more than that. You'll never know how funny I am. You'll never know how kind I am. You'll never know that I'm probably the most nonjudgmental person you'll ever meet." "People always say, 'Why do you care what others think? Just be confident in who you are!' And it's not about confidence — I am confident," she adds. "What's painful is not being given the chance to show people who I really am because my tattoos are all they see." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. A licensed esthetician, Locke enjoys using social media to share her passion for skincare and makeup, along with honest reflections about her life and experiences. Recently, she recorded a video on her balcony candidly sharing her tattoo regrets — never expecting the impact it would have. The video quickly went viral, garnering nearly 7.4 million views and over 20,000 comments. Many viewers, like Locke, expressed regret over their own tattoos. "I've received a lot of love and, surprisingly, a lot of hate," she says. "Millions of people related to me and felt so alone in their regret. I've received so many private messages from people thanking me for speaking out. It's embarrassing. It's humbling. That's why no one talks about this, because no one wants to admit they made a permanent mistake on their body." "Regret is a normal feeling, especially when you've grown and matured into a better version of yourself," she adds. "Most of the hate I've received has come from within the tattoo community. I'll never understand how people can take my story and my feelings about my body as a personal attack on them or their tattoos." Despite the backlash, the positive responses have outweighed the negativity. "I've had a lot of parents and teachers reach out to tell me they plan to show my video to their kids, and that makes me incredibly happy." She adds, "[My friends and family] are all so proud of me! It's a big conversation and hard topic to discuss, especially in front of millions of people to watch and then criticize me for, and they are just so excited and proud of me." Looking back, Locke says that if she could go back in time, she wouldn't get a single tattoo. "I mentioned in my video that I wish someone had told me to wait, and honestly, I'm sure someone did. I probably just didn't listen," she says. "At 18, things go in one ear and out the other. But I wish more people had told me to slow down and really think about it. When you're young, you tend to ignore advice, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying to educate people about the long-term consequences." She adds, "A lot of kids and young adults — myself included — grow up thinking tattoos make you cool. But the truth is, you make yourself cool. Your uniqueness. Your sense of style. Your beautiful red curly hair! Your freckles! The gap between your teeth! Your sense of humor. Tattoos are cool, but they don't make someone cool. If a tattoo is something you truly want, just take the time to think long and hard about it." When it comes to what's next for her tattoos, Locke says she has no plans to cover them up. "For me, it's not about thinking the tattoos are ugly; I actually still think many of them are beautiful. I just don't want them on my body anymore," she says. "I've considered removal. In fact, I've done two sessions on my fingers. It was excruciatingly painful, and it's a very slow process. I've realized that removing these tattoos will take years and be incredibly expensive." "I am in no way shaming the tattoo community or anyone with tattoos, and I never will," she adds. "I am the most nonjudgmental person you will ever meet. I have so many friends and family members with tattoos and they are all amazing human beings. This is also not a message telling people not to get tattoos. Please just think it through and wait until you are older, once you have found yourself and your identity." Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword
