Sukhbir writes to PM Modi expressing concern over instances of disrespect to Sikh religious symbols
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Badal specifically drew his attention to the incident in which a devout and baptized Sikh girl, Gurpreet Kaur, from Tarn Taran district in Punjab was stopped from entering the examination centre in Poornima University in Jaipur as a candidate for the Rajasthan Judicial Services on the plea that she was wearing her sacred articles of faith – 'kara' and 'kirpan'.
'This is a gross violation of her constitutional rights guaranteed under Article 25 of the statute and it denied her fundamental right to practice her religion. Article 25 of the Constitution specifically mentions 'kirpan' among other symbols of Sikh religion which are exempt from any bar even in flights,' wrote Badal.
'It is shocking that rules, if any, are framed by lower authorities flouting the sacred Constitution. The government of India should issue, or, if necessary, re-issue clear-cut guidelines to all states and Union Territories about the exemption to the inseparable articles of faith,' said Badal in his letter missive to the Prime Minister.
The Akali chief said this was not a one off incident but part of the ever increasing number of examples of religious intolerance towards the uniqueness of Sikh identity.
In a similar incident last year, two Sikh girls were stopped from appearing for Rajasthan Judicial Services in an exam centre in Jodhpur.
'Sikhs and their identity are inseparable and this was duly acknowledged and constitutionally mandated for compliance for all purposes in the country by the founding fathers. But some officials at lower rungs deem themselves even above the Constitution. This must stop as this vitiates communal harmony in the country,' wrote Badal, adding: 'You (the PM) are personally aware of the profound spiritual and emotional significance of the Sikh religious symbols and what these mean to our devoutly religious and fiercely patriotic community. I request you to issue immediate directions for compliance to ensure full respect to these symbols at all levels across the country.'
Badal also urged the Rajasthan High Court to provide the victimised Sikh girl Gurpreet Kaur a special opportunity to appear for the examination, ensuring her right to uphold her faith is respected.

Founded by Savarkar, revived by Godse's niece: Abhinav Bharat ‘vindicated', hails Malegaon acquittals
Originally floated by freedom fighter V D Savarkar in 1904 to carry out an armed struggle against the British and revived in post-Independence India, the Abhinav Bharat hit the headlines almost two decades ago after some of its members, including Lt Col Prasad Purohit, were accused of masterminding the 2008 Malegaon blasts. On Thursday, as a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court acquitted all the accused in the case, Milind Joshirao, a Pune resident who claims to be the organisation's head, said false allegations had been levelled against the outfit and the term 'saffron terror' was coined. 'The judgment shows that all allegations against Abhinav Bharat and Hindus arrested in the bomb blast case were false,' he said, hailing the verdict. Savarkar, also a Hindutva ideologue, had dissolved Abhinav Bharat in 1952, saying there was no need for an armed struggle in independent India and urged the youth to join the defence forces to serve the country. It was revived only in 2006 in Raigad by his brother Narayan's daughter-in-law Himani Savarkar, along with a group of historians, intellectuals, and activists. Himani, who later became the President of the revived organisation, is the daughter of Gopal Godse, the elder brother of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse. According to Himani, Abhinav Bharat, which was registered as a Trust on February 9, 2007, was revived to 'generate a sense of patriotism among youth,' create awareness on social issues and apprise them about 'injustice being meted out against Hindus'. The organisation aimed to fulfil its aims through lectures, discussions and seminars in colleges and public platforms within and outside Maharashtra. According to investigators who probed the Malegaon blasts, the Abhinav Bharat was an 'organised crime syndicate' whose members had been active since 2003. It was alleged that Lt Col Purohit, who was accused of procuring explosives from Kashmir for the attack, played a key part in the organisation's revival. Investigators also claimed that the Abhinav Bharat wanted to 'turn India into a Hindu Rashtra called Aryavart and place a government-in-exile' as its members were 'dissatisfied with the Constitution'. Its members were also accused of planning to train people in guerrilla warfare to eliminate people who opposed a Hindu Rashtra. 'It is unfortunate that an organisation undertaking constructive activities for society was harassed,' Purohit said after the verdict. Maharashtra ATS chargesheet claimed that Himani, in her statement, mentioned that Purohit discussed the Malegaon location during a meeting in Bhopal for taking revenge against Muslims. However, in a January 2009 interaction with The Indian Express she denied making any such mention in her statement during the probe. She passed away in 2015. Her son Satyaki Savarkar said his mother 'suffered a lot due to this case as false narratives of saffron terrorism were propagated'. Another acquitted member of the Abhinav Bharat, Ajay Rahirkar, was the treasurer of the organisation at the time of his arrest in 2008. Investigators alleged that Rahikar's house in Erandwane of Pune served as the 'head office' of Abhinav Bharat. However, Rahikar's advocate Nitin Apte said the body is a registered Trust and was not banned by the government. Joshirao, whom the NIA declared hostile, said though Abhinav Bharat was branded as an extremist outfit and its documents were seized, it continued to work in the 'national interest'. 'I had told the court on record how I was threatened by ATS officers to implicate RSS leaders and (Uttar Pradesh CM) Yogi Adityanath,' he said.

J&K cop booked in disproportionate assets case
Jammu and Kashmir Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a disproportionate assets case against the police constable who was terminated from service in February over alleged links to militancy and searches were conducted on his properties starting Thursday. ACB registered a case FIR No. 03/2025 U/S 13(1)(b) r/w 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 in Police Station ACB Anantnag against the man. (File) J&K Police selection grade constable Firdous Ahmad was terminated from service by J&K LG administration under Article 311 of the Constitution. 'A secret verification was conducted by ACB into allegations that the terminated public servant Firdous Ahmad has acquired substantial assets, both movable and immovable, disproportionate to his known sources of income, in his own name as well as in the names of his family members,' a statement by ACB said. The bureau said that the verification revealed the accused has accumulated significant assets. 'They include two storied residential house constructed by him on ancestral land at Hugam, Srigufwara, Anantnag, Palatial House upon land measuring 01 kanal 10 marlas situated at Estate Machbhawan Mattan, Hotel Grand Lords (one-third share) situated at Movora, Tehsil Salar, Pahalgam and double storied house at Tawi Vihar, Sidra Jammu,' the statement said. Consequently, ACB registered a case FIR No. 03/2025 U/S 13(1)(b) r/w 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 in Police Station ACB Anantnag against the man. 'During the course of the investigation, search warrants were obtained from the Spl Judge Anti-Corruption Court Anantnag for conducting searches at places mentioned above. It surfaced during conduct of search that the accused is also being allotted a police quarter at Police Housing Colony Bemina, therefore search was conducted at the said place also on the authorisation of SSP ACB Anantnag,' the ACB said. It said that searches were simultaneously carried out at all the places, which were still underway. 'Further investigation of the case is going on,' the bureau said.

Ajnala police station attack: Court frames charges against 41, including 9 Amritpal aides
A local court in Amritsar on Thursday framed charges against 41 accused, including nine close aides of jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, in the Ajnala police station attack case. (HT File) The accused, including nine aides of the jailed MP, were produced in the court of additional session judge Parinder Singh amid tight security. The radical Sikh leader, who heads Waris Punjab De (WPD), is still lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam after his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) was extended by a year. The rest of his aides have been brought back to the state to face trial in various cases after the Punjab government revoked their detentions under the NSA in March and April. Among those produced in court include Kulwant Singh Rauke, Bhagwant Singh alias Pardhan Mantri Bajeke, Amritpal's uncle Harjeet Singh Chacha, Gurinder Pal Singh alias Guri, Gurmeet Singh Bukanwala, Daljit Singh Kalsi, Basant Singh, Varinder Singh Johal and Varinder Singh alias Fauji. All nine were lodged in Assam. Charges were framed against 41 persons under section 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault on public servant), 186 (obstructing any public servant in the discharge of his public functions), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 332 (causes hurt to any person being a public servant), 333 (causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from their duty), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 427 (causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees or upwards), 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 25 of Arms Act, defence council advocate Rituraj Singh Sandhu said. In February 2023, Amritpal and his associates were booked under various charges for allegedly attacking the Ajnala police station to get one of his aides released from the cops' custody. Six cops were injured in the clash. A month later, on March 18, police began a crackdown against Amritpal and his aides. Police intercepted Amritpal's cavalcade near Mehatpur town in Jalandhar, but the WPD chief managed to give the cop a slip along with his close aide Papalpreet. What followed was a month-long manhunt which culminated on April 23 when Amritpal surrendered at Rode village in Moga district. Advocate Sandhu said the evidence trial would start from August 2 in this case. 'The prosecution will present evidence and witnesses in the court. The trial will be conducted daily as per the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. This case will have to be settled in two months,' Sandhu said. 'Amritpal will not be part of the trial as his NSA detention hasn't ended,' the lawyer added. Cops made us sign statements against Amritpal: Bhagwant While being produced in court, jail MP's close aide Bhagwant Singh denied that he made any statements which claimed that the radical Sikh leader 'consumes drugs' while being lodged in Dibrugarh jail. His statement came after police filed a challan in Ajnala court last week, submitting statements made by Bhagwant and Varinder, which mentioned 'allegations' against Amritpal. As the cops were taking Bhagwant to court, he started shouting, apparently making a statement for the media present that his statement had been taken under duress. 'The police have alleged that Amritpal consumes drugs based on my statement. They forcibly made us sign scores of papers and got our statements recorded. All these allegations are false,' he said. Amritpal's counsel, Imaan Singh Khara, said the statements had no legal value 'These were recorded under Section 27 of the Indian Evidence Act and could easily be challenged in the court. Statements recorded in police custody are not relied upon by the court,' he said. There was also a minor scuffle between the kin of the accused as the cops as the former tried to get close to them.
