Anwar: Dr M's sons must return wealth if source can't be proven

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the sons of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to return their wealth to the government if it is proven to have been acquired through unclear or illegitimate means.
In an interview with Indonesian journalist Najwa Shihab in Jakarta, Anwar said the extraordinary wealth amassed by Dr Mahathir's sons raised serious questions that must be addressed, especially considering the vast sums involved.
Commenting on a recent opposition rally led by Pas which heavily criticised his leadership and accused him of corruption during his time in office, Anwar said he had left the matter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate.
"I don't make baseless accusations against anyone. I've handed the matter over to the MACC.
"But if they themselves admit — not as an accusation but as a declaration — that 'I (Mahathir) or my son own RM1.2 billion, and another one RM4 billion', then the money must be returned.
"You must pay it back, unless you can clearly explain where the funds came from," he said.
Previously, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir declared assets worth around RM1 billion, while Mirzan Mahathir declared RM246.2 million to the MACC.
Anwar also questioned the opposition's position in defending such individuals, describing it as contradictory to their supposed role in combatting corruption.
"Isn't it odd that the opposition is defending this? They ought to be at the forefront of the anti-corruption fight, yet they're shielding those accused of wrongdoing.
"Why should the son of a prime minister or minister possess billions of ringgit in wealth? This culture must end.
"I want real reform — not just on paper or in regulation, but reform in action."
The interview was conducted during Anwar's two-day working visit to Indonesia, held in conjunction with the 13th Malaysia–Indonesia Annual Leaders' Consultation with President Prabowo Subianto.

Targeted RON95 petrol subsidies to be announced by end-Sept 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said the detailed implementation plans for targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol will be announced by end-September 2025, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on July 23, 2025. In a written parliamentary reply, MoF said the government is actively developing and testing the subsidy targeting mechanism to ensure smooth execution upon rollout. 'This includes refining data from agencies such as the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM),' it said. 'The government aims to adopt a more comprehensive approach to ensure RON95 subsidies reach the intended target groups.' MoF was responding to a question from Hulu Langat Member of Parliament, Pakatan Harapan's Mohd Sany Hamzan, who asked for an update on the subsidy retargeting implementation, particularly the front-end and back-end phases announced by the Ministry of Economy. According to MoF, once implemented, the retargeted subsidy mechanism will allow eligible Malaysians to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre through MyKad verification. Non-citizens and those ineligible for the subsidy will pay the unsubsidised market rate. - Bernama

King leads historic chapter

Diplomatic milestone: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, accompanied by Anwar, at the royal sending-off ceremony in Subang for His Majesty's historic state visit to Russia. — Bernama PM: Russia visit reaffirms monarchy's diplomatic role KUALA LUMPUR: The state visit to Russia by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, marks a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the visit, which takes place from today until Aug 10 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is expected to enhance strategic cooperation across key sectors. These include bilateral trade, investment, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people ties. 'Malaysia has the potential to attract new investments and advanced technologies from Russia, particularly in the fields of energy, aerospace, defence and smart agriculture. '(All of this is) in line with the Madani Economy framework that emphasises competitiveness, sustainability and shared prosperity,' Anwar said in a Facebook post yesterday, Bernama reported. More significantly, he noted that the visit reaffirms the role of the Malaysian monarchy as a respected pillar of national diplomacy, enhancing Malaysia's image as a neutral, open and progressive nation on the global stage. Anwar also described the visit as a historic milestone, with Sultan Ibrahim becoming the first Malaysian Head of State to set foot in Russia for a state visit since diplomatic relations were established in 1967. 'This reflects His Majesty's role as a symbol of national unity and a strategic contributor to strengthening Malaysia's international relations,' he added. Earlier today, Anwar accompanied Sultan Ibrahim at the royal send-off ceremony at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Subang. Russia is Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations and ranks 28th globally, with bilateral trade valued at RM11.46bil (US$2.48bil) in 2024. From January to June, total trade between the two countries amounted to RM4.13bil (US$945.7mil).
