Singtel's new 5G+ Priority plans are key for its premium customer push

Business Times15-05-2025

[SINGAPORE] Premium customers remain top of mind for Singtel with new 5G+ Priority plans.
The new plans promising faster streaming speeds and priority access to the network were launched on Thursday (May 15).
They offer customers four times faster speeds and ultra-low latency, which translates to smoother streaming speeds, ultra-responsive gaming and uninterrupted video calls.
There is also guaranteed network access in high-traffic areas and during peak hours by giving these customers priority to the network.
Besides elevated connectivity and speed, 5G+ Priority customers will also have access to priority services in Singtel shops, hotlines and chat support for assistance.
There is also enhanced digital security for local users and those roaming overseas with 24/7 detection and blocking against cyber threats and malicious content.

Existing customers on SIM-only Plus and Ultra, L plans and above were upgraded for free to Singtel 5G+ Priority in the first week of May.
'We want to be able to show customer appreciation,' said Ng Tian Chong, CEO of Singtel.
For customers spending on higher-tiered plans, Ng added that they should get the performance they pay for. 'Singapore airline customers, for example, enjoy flying…compared to other airlines in general,' noted Ng. 'It could be a premium, but they get good service, (a) good programme and so on.'
This includes enterprise customers like Hyundai, who have been tapping onto its 5G+ networks to pilot its smart factory: the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center.
Ng noted that they had many enterprise customers who are adopting or using the capabilities of Singtel's 5G network. 'We do see ROI (return on investment) in this, and our progress has been good,' he added.
For price-conscious customers, Singtel does offer different plans of varying price points, Ng noted. What sets Singtel apart is offering top-of-the-line services for different customer segments.
The phone plans for 5G+ Priority range from S$62 per month to S$288 per month while the SIM-only plans range from S$35 per month to S$80 per month.
The 5G+ upgrade was pushed out earlier in February, when Singtel deployed the 700 megahertz spectrum, which it was granted in October 2024. This increases connectivity islandwide by 40 per cent within high-rise buildings, underground areas and remote areas.
Part of the network upgrade was the deployment of network slicing for its customers. Network slicing is a 5G technology that was mostly used by businesses to overcome congestion for high-speed critical applications. The technology provides customers with a 'slice' of the network that can adapt to their specific needs in real time.
In recent years, Singtel has deployed network slicing at major events such as the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, the National Day Parade, and international concert tours.
Shares of Singtel closed flat at S$3.75 on Thursday.

Can US ports handle a freight spike or will they be overwhelmed?

ARE Los Angeles and Long Beach heading for another port congestion crisis? Since the United States put tariffs on hold for a 90-day trade war truce with China on May 14, the market has expected a shipping surge driven by Chinese exports. Ocean carriers have re-instated suspended services, restarted vessels lying idle, and introduced new routes – revitalising transpacific lanes. But how much capacity has actually returned to the US-bound trade? Estimates vary. According to maritime consultancy eeSea, total capacity from Asia to North America will reach 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in June – 400,000 TEUs more than May. That figure is projected to climb further in July to 2.8 million TEUs. The majority of this added capacity targets the US West Coast, particularly the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Data provider Sea-Intelligence reports similar trends. Its latest weekly update shows a 17 per cent year-on-year rise in Asia-US West Coast capacity in June, with a projected 19 per cent jump in July. Meanwhile, East Coast capacity is growing more modestly – up only 7 per cent in June but expected to match the West Coast's 19 per cent rise in July. These figures are based on carriers' existing schedules, which remain subject to change. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up The big question is whether Los Angeles and Long Beach can handle this influx. Will the port congestion seen in the pandemic era re-appear? Preliminary forecasts indicate that container volumes at both ports will begin rising in the second week of June, topping 100,000 TEUs a week. Volumes will continue climbing in the third week. While fourth-week data is not yet available, estimates suggest traffic will remain elevated. Many extra sailings are scheduled to arrive in late June and early July, suggesting persistently high throughput at least into mid-July. Historically, both ports handled their highest Asian import volumes in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic – about 10 million TEUs for the year. The Port of Los Angeles alone processed a record 520,000 TEUs in May 2021, while the Port of Long Beach reached its single-month peak of 400,000 TEUs the same month. Will the same influx appear again this time? Industry opinion is divided. Senior executives at leading carriers and terminals suggest the tariff deferral may not trigger a pandemic-style shipping boom. While June volumes are likely to exceed May's, early expectations may have overshot. Much of the inventory that had been sitting in warehouses shipped out quickly after the May 14 tariff suspension. And even if buyers place new orders, lead times mean many shipments will not depart until late June or July. Moreover, despite the suspension of a 125 per cent reciprocal tariff, the 30 per cent levy added this year – on top of 2018's Section 301 duties – means US-China trade has not returned to normal. The truce may offer temporary relief, but it is unlikely to generate a prolonged surge. Freight rates on transpacific routes have spiked in recent weeks. But does that signal true demand strength? A key indicator is the balance between cargo booked under negotiated contract (NAC) rates versus freight-all-kinds spot rates. At present, many freight forwarders are still able to secure lower-priced NAC slots — suggesting excess capacity remains. While sentiment may push prices upward temporarily, ultimate rate direction hinges on ship utilisation. If vessels sail full, rates will hold firm. If not, the rally will fade. So, will there be port congestion? A sudden and sustained spike in volume could strain operations. However, if elevated cargo volumes last only two to three weeks, the ports can manage. If imports climb more than 20 per cent above normal and stay high through July, congestion risks increase sharply. The bottom line is that Los Angeles and Long Beach are entering a high-alert phase. If disruption comes, it will probably begin to show in late July. CAIXIN GLOBAL Zhang Huafeng is the chief operating officer of Duke Shipping Agency

ECB's Schnabel says now is right time to boost role of euro

[DUBROVNIK] European Central Bank Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel sees a favourable moment now to strengthen the euro's global role as investors turn to Europe. There is a 'window of opportunity' to increase the international role of the euro, she said in a question to a panel at the 31st Dubrovnik Economic Conference on Saturday (Jun 7). Earlier at the same conference, she said that there are signals that investors are focusing on the continent to diversify their portfolios, calling it a 'positive confidence effect.' The remarks reinforce comments from policymakers including president Christine Lagarde and show how officials are seeking to turn President Donald Trump's attacks on global trade and US institutions to their advantage. Investors have rushed out of the US dollar so far this year, with the greenback falling against every other major currency tracked by Bloomberg. At the end of May, Lagarde said that Trump's erratic policies offer a 'prime opportunity' to strengthen the euro's role and allow the currency bloc to enjoy more of the privileges so far reserved for the US dollar. The changes 'create the opening for a 'global euro moment,'' that politicians should seize, she said. Schnabel on Saturday referred to talks with financial market actors showing that investors are becoming more interested in diversifying and 'moving a bit into Europe – again, great news.' BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up She said that this is also due to expected higher public spending in Europe in defence and infrastructure. 'In the case of Germany, which has a lot of fiscal space, actually also investors saw it very positively that finally Germany gave up on its austerity,' she said. Schnabel highlighted that more investment into Europe ease financial conditions and lowers fragmentation – 'which is another very positive effect.' In recent weeks, Schnabel has emphasised the need for a big European bond market to strengthen the euro's global role and suggested considering joint debt to finance public goods in Europe. Commenting in an interview with El Pais published on Sunday, Spain's central bank chief Jose Luis Escriva also highlighted that 'the US dollar's dominance as an international reserve currency seems to be peaking.' 'The euro has the potential to compete with the US dollar, especially if it maintains its macroeconomic and institutional stability,' he said. 'With a strong economy and a trade volume larger than that of the US, Europe has room to strengthen the euro's role as a reserve and reference currency in an international trade still dominated by the US dollar.' The 2,812,300 shares were acquired by Quan Min Holdings at an average price of S$0.355 apiece. Since the end of April, Dr Ng has increased his total interest from 53.02 per cent. At the FY24 AGM in late April, Dr Ng shared that after strong organic growth during Covid, the company expects to pursue more mergers and acquisitions over the next two to three years, while the chief operating officer also noted rising interest from AI-driven firms seeking its information management and treatment services. Singtel On Jun 5, Singtel independent non-executive director Yong Ying-I acquired 150,000 shares at an average price of S$3.87 per share. This increased her direct interest to 210,000 shares. On May 22, Singtel launched a value realisation buyback programme of up to S$2 billion, funded by excess capital from asset recycling. This follows on from the group changing its dividend policy back in May 2024 to include a value realisation dividend in addition to a core dividend. Since then, the mid-term asset recycling target of S$6 billion under the Singtel28 growth plan has been raised to S$9 billion. Uni-Asia Group On May 30, Uni-Asia Group executive director and CEO Masahiro Iwabuchi acquired 454,300 shares at an average price of S$0.78 per share. With a consideration of S$356,171, this increased Iwabuchi's direct interest in the company from 0.82 per cent to 1.4 per cent. He leads the property investment department with deep banking and real estate experience across Asia and holds directorships across multiple group subsidiaries. In its FY24 (ended Dec 31), Uni-Asia Group launched a business transformation aimed at meeting internal return targets to support sustainable dividends, with a focus on driving continued growth in the years ahead. The group has maintained a 14-year track record of consistent dividends and is also exploring a share buyback mandate to enhance shareholder value. At the same time, it continues to reinvest in its Japan real estate portfolio, evaluate its structure, and explore strategic partnerships to support long-term return on equity growth and close the net asset value gap. For shipping, the group is focused on restructuring and reinvesting in joint venture vessels – such as the Kellet Island initiative – to renew fleet structures and broaden both the vessel investment portfolio and stakeholder base. When market conditions are favourable, the group maintains it may consider acquiring newbuild vessels, as part of its broader fleet revitalisation strategy to gradually replace ageing ships – typically around 15 years old – with younger vessels between seven and 10 years of age. Digital Core Reit On May 28, Digital Core Management's lead independent non-executive director John Herbert acquired 250,000 units of Digital Core Reit at US$0.495 per unit. This was his first acquisition on the open market since joining the board in November 2021. Herbert has decades of global investment banking and real estate expertise, having led major real estate divisions at HSBC, Merrill Lynch, and Citigroup, and overseen deals across more than 35 countries. For its Q1FY25 (ended Mar 31), the manager reported Digital Core Reit delivered strong execution with 10 per cent growth in distributable income from Q1FY24, rising occupancy, a strategic Osaka acquisition, and successful fixed-rate debt issuance ahead of tariff impacts. In late March, the Reit also acquired a 20 per cent stake in a fully leased, purpose-built Osaka data centre for 13 billion yen (US$87 million), enhancing its Asia Pacific diversification, lifting distribution per unit by 1.8 per cent, and positioning Osaka as its fourth-largest market. The manager also highlighted that the portfolio is 98 per cent occupied, with over 85 per cent of rental revenue shielded from energy cost inflation via pass-throughs, and full freehold ownership protects against rising ground rents. Bonvests Holdings On May 30, Bonvests Holdings executive chairman Henry Ngo acquired 227,000 shares at an average price of S$0.90 per share. The acquisitions were made through Allsland, which is wholly owned by Ngo. This increases his total interest in Bonvests Holdings from 84.75 per cent to 84.80 per cent. His preceding acquisition was in November 2024 with 101,000 shares acquired at the same price. He has gradually increased his total interest in the group from 82.93 per cent in August 2018. Ngo noted in April that the rental division remains stable, while the hotel division faces rising competition, costs, and global uncertainty despite industry recovery. He added that the industrial division improved in FY24 (ended Dec 31) but continues to face headwinds in its contract cleaning and waste disposal segments due to stiff competition, rising material costs, and wage pressures. Ngo maintained that despite these challenges, the division remains focused on preserving cash and enhancing operational efficiency. PropNex On May 30, PropNex executive director and deputy CEO Kelvin Fong Keng Seong acquired 31,000 shares at an average price of S$1.01 per share. His deemed interest is 10.26 per cent. His preceding acquisitions were in April, with 86,000 shares acquired at an average price of S$1.01 apiece. At the April 23 AGM, Fong highlighted a robust pipeline of upcoming and ongoing launches, with inventory expected to reach about 18,000 units in 2025, indicating a healthy market. He also relayed that PropNex continues to lead in market share across multiple new projects, driven not just by its large salesforce but also by high productivity, strong training, and support systems. Fong also maintained that revenue from these transactions is anticipated to be recognised in the first half of 2025. Fong leads the sales and leadership training initiatives, including the flagship PropNex boot camp which empowers over 2,000 salespersons annually in collaboration with fellow team leaders. He also highlighted at the April AGM that he remains committed to developing its salespersons through training programmes, boot camps, and mindset workshops, reinforcing their role as trusted property consultants. He added that consumer education initiatives and digital tools further enhance customer engagement, while broader outreach efforts and his second book, Property Wealth System: Elevate Your Assets, Elevate Your Wealth, underscore PropNex's focus on thought leadership and empowerment. PropNex is Singapore's largest listed real estate agency. At the April AGM, executive chairman and CEO Mohamed Ismail also relayed Frost & Sullivan data that found PropNex represented 35 per cent of Singapore's salespersons strength, it accounted for 64 per cent of total property transactions for HDB resale, new launches and private residential resale (including executive condominiums, landed and non-landed) in 2024. Wing Tai Holdings Wing Tai Holdings chairman and managing director Cheng Wai Keung continued to raise his deemed interest in the company from 61.84 to 61.85 per cent, through 100,000 shares bought by his spouse, Helen Chow.
