Spain captain sends ominous warning to Lionesses ahead of Euro 2025 final
Spain captain Irene Paredes isn't feeling the pressure ahead of Sunday's Euro 2025 final against England. Instead, the centre-back sees the game as an opportunity for her and her team-mates to write a new chapter by following their 2023 World Cup win with another major title.
"We have a team that [has] played important games and tournaments,' Paredes said. 'We know how to manage that and those emotions that sometimes arise.
'We are a team who don't see this game as a pressure but as an opportunity to continue writing history, do something big and to show ourselves and let people enjoy.'
Spain beat England in that 2023 World Cup final, while the two teams exchanged victories in the Nations League earlier this year. Montse Tome has been in the dugout for those last two matches, and Spain's manager shares skipper Paredes' feelings about the opportunity this team has in Basel.
"I don't think about pressure,' Tome said. 'I think during the whole tournament we have been writing history - getting to the semis and the final for the first time [at the Euros], beating Germany for the first time.
'We have been accomplishing objectives and that's the reason we're here. Our first objective was to play six games and that's the case.
'England are defending the title, they are the current champions, we will compete and we will enjoy the game. Of course we want to win."
England have made use of their full squad during their run to the final, with super-subs Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang digging them out of trouble on more than one occasion. Spain have strength in depth as well, though, with the likes of Salma Paralluelo and Athenea del Castillo ready to make a difference when called upon - including in the semi-final against Germany, when Del Castillo got the assist for Aitana Bonmati's extra-time winner.
"It's a final. We know it's a complicated game against a big national team and the current champion,' Tome added. 'We played twice against them this year, we know it will be hard.
'For the team, I have 23 players. If we feel we have to change something we can use all 23 players. This is something we have been doing since the beginning. They are all ready. 'If we need them, they are available."
England might have needed penalties in their quarter-final against Sweden and extra-time against Italy in the semis, but Paredes believes Sarina Wiegman 's team are in the final on merit. "England are one of the best national teams in the world. They deserve to be in the final,' she said.
"We played against them several times. They made us suffer, we did the same so it will be a balanced game. All the respect for them."

Chelsea urged to sign 'inspirational' £40m Man Utd transfer target this summer
Former Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has urged his old club to sign Manchester United transfer target Emiliano Martinez this summer. The Red Devils saw a loan bid rejected by Aston Villa last month – but the 32-year-old goalkeeper is thought to be available for around £40m. Robert Sanchez, who currently operates as Chelsea's No.1 goalkeeper, faced plenty of criticism for a number of his performances last season. Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, would arguably take Chelsea to the next level – and help them challenge for the top-flight title. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. 'Emiliano Martinez would be an inspiration in the Chelsea dressing room,' Petit told ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. 'I have criticised his behaviour in the past but he knows what it takes to win titles, he has that experience. 'He can inspire other players and he has all the qualities needed of a top goalkeeper. 'He would be a very good signing for Chelsea and 32 isn't old for a goalkeeper. 'I think he'd link well with Enzo Maresca and the players already at the club. 'One fear I have is for Aston Villa, I am worried about them with top players leaving the club, I'm not sure where it will leave them next season.' It is believed that Martinez rebuffed the chance to move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League earlier this summer. Martinez has shined in the Premier League since he moved to Villa Park from Arsenal for £20m five years ago, making 212 appearances to date. More Trending The Argentine was named The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper in both 2022 and 2024. But William Gallas believes Chelsea would be wise to avoid a move for Martinez in the summer window, which remains open until September 1. 'I have some serious doubts about whether he would be a good fit for Chelsea,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'I don't know if he's got the right profile to be the goalkeeper of Chelsea. When I think about his antics, I just don't think he would be a positive addition to the club.' Northern Ireland and Liverpool star Conor Bradley in a race to be fit for the start of the new season
Bradley has impressed during pre-season for the Reds but injury means the 22-year-old sitting out the visit of the Spaniards to Merseyside. Slot's comments suggest it is not serious which is promising news for both Liverpool, beginning the defence of the Premier League on August 15, and Northern Ireland whose World Cup qualifying campaign is just a month away. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and number one goalkeeper Alisson Becker plus defender Joe Gomez were also absentees for the two matches versus Athletic Club. While Slot stated Van Dijk and Alisson will be back for Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace and the opening Premier League match of the 2025/26 season at home to Bournemouth on Friday week, the boss of the champions told LFC TV that 'it is going to be tight' for both Gomez and Bradley. Northern Ireland supporters will be keeping a close eye on the situation with the opening World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg on September 4. Manager Michael O'Neill is keen that all his big hitters are fit for that vital match which is quickly followed by another away game three days later against group favourites Germany. Bradley has become a figurehead for O'Neill's new, vibrant young Northern Ireland side which has given the Green and White Army hope of reaching a first major tournament since Euro 2016. He is also an important player for Liverpool. Having made his first team debut as a teenager, he excelled at Bolton Wanderers on loan before returning to Merseyside where he has shone for the Reds when selected from the start or as a substitute. The Tyrone native has won the Premier League and Carabao Cup with his boyhood club over the last two seasons though on the flip side he has suffered frustrating injuries keeping him on the sidelines at different stages during that time. With Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid in the summer, this season is viewed as the one that Bradley can nail down a regular starting slot at right back though he faces stiff competition from new signing Jeremie Frimpong who has come in from Bayer Leverkusen. Before tonight, former Dungannon United Youth player Bradley had featured in all four of Liverpool's pre-season fixtures scoring in the first one against Preston North End.

Michelle Agyemang displays true colours as she shows Sarina Wiegman how she feels
Michelle Agyemang emerged as an England hero during the Lionesses' triumph at Euro 2025 and the forward has spoken honestly about manager Sarina Wiegman England hero Michelle Agyemang has revealed how Lionesses' manager Sarina Wiegman played a crucial role in her success during Euro 2025. The Lionesses defended the European Championship trophy after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Spain. Agyemang may not have been one of the penalty takers in the final, but she contributed significantly to England's triumphant campaign. Despite having only one previous appearance before the tournament, scoring on her Lionesses debut in April, the 19-year-old was named in Wiegman's squad. The manager's bold decision paid off as Agyemang quickly established herself as England's super-sub, netting late equalisers against Sweden and Italy in the knockout rounds. The young Arsenal prospect had nothing but praise for Wiegman when asked for her thoughts on the England boss. "I think Sarina's amazing," Agyemang told Sky News. "I only met her probably three months before the tournament and to see the faith she put me in from day one, to make my debut in April. "To only have one appearance going into the Euros, to show that faith and that trust in me, shows how lovely she is as a woman and a coach. "She's like a mum to the team. She respects all of us and she wants the best for us. You can see it, we all want to play for her, for the rest of the team, and to go and win the game for her because she deserves it." Wiegman has now guided England to consecutive European Championship victories, after the team's Wembley triumph over Germany to win Euro 2022. The Lionesses' most recent silverware represents the first occasion that either the men's or women's senior team have claimed a major tournament on foreign soil. Agyemang wasn't included in the England squad until this year, but did have the chance to watch the Lionesses closely as a ball girl during one of Wiegman's first matches in charge at Wembley in 2021. Despite her lack of experience, Agyemang claimed the Young Player of the Tournament award and has truly impressed the England boss. "She has something special," Wiegman said following Agyemang's 96th-minute semi-final goal against Italy. "She's only 19 years old, she's very mature, she knows exactly what she has to do. "When you talk about little things that she picks up straight away, because she's not only in the 18-yard box very dangerous but when we have to go to her as a target player, she keeps the ball really well too. "Even when you saw her shot hit the crossbar, that was not just a shot, she was aiming for it. If she continues like this she has a very bright future." Agyemang earned her England call-up following impressive displays on loan at Brighton in the WSL last season. Wiegman revealed that Agyemang's approach to her loan spell showed that the young striker, who now boasts three goals in five England appearances, would thrive at international level. When asked whether Agyemang's performances had caused a selection dilemma during the tournament, the England manager explained: "She's not forcing me. She is very grateful that she gets minutes. She's ready for it. Her growth and development went so quickly. "From not starting at Brighton and being on loan, to getting lots more minutes, showing how good she is, and coming into our team, as things go it has been pretty smooth for her and I think she feels very good about that."
