500 Chinese families set to explore Sabah through nature learning tours

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has officially welcomed the first group of Chinese parent-child families for the inaugural Malaysia Educational Family Camp, a large-scale nature-based learning programme organised by Hangzhou Mutong Travel Services—the company behind China's leading educational travel brand, Baby Walk the World. Over the next two months, nearly 500 families from across China will arrive in scheduled groups to participate in this 6-day, 5-night immersive journey through Sabah. Designed for children aged six and above, the programme offers experiential outdoor learning focused on nature, resilience, and cultural appreciation—encouraging deeper curiosity and personal growth through real-world experiences. With 13 years of experience and over 390,000 families served, Hangzhou Mutong is a pioneer in parent-child educational travel. Sabah now joins the brand's global portfolio of destinations, which includes Sri Lanka, Hokkaido, Malaysia-Singapore, Nepal, and the United Kingdom. 'We are delighted to welcome Hangzhou Mutong Travel Services and their Baby Walk the World programme to Sabah,' said Mr. Julinus Jeffrey Jimit, Chief Executive Officer of the Sabah Tourism Board. DBKK urged to tackle illegal STRA, review high hotel licensing fees

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Budget & Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) has called on Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) to act urgently against illegal short-term residential accommodation (STRA) operators and review what it deems excessive hotel licensing fees. MyBHA President Dr Sri Ganesh said it is unacceptable that licensed hotel operators are burdened with high fees and strict compliance while unlicensed STRA units operate freely without regulation or accountability. 'This creates an unfair and unsafe tourism environment, not only for businesses but for the tourists themselves,' he said. The association proposed a tiered licensing system, lower fees for budget hotels, a tourist tax alternative, and better enforcement against illegal STRA. It also called for more transparency in how licensing revenue is used and urged DBKK to work with industry players to create fair, sustainable tourism policies. Illegal tours: Go after buyers also, says Satta

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's tourism industry players urged the authorities to take action not only against illegal tour operators but also their clients. Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Satta) Chairman Dato' Seri Winston Liaw said targeting both the sellers and buyers would be a more effective deterrent. 'I think the issue keeps recurring despite media coverage and the increase in penalties to RM500,000 in fines and 10 years' imprisonment. Illegal operators are still active,' he said. One of the reasons, he added, is the lack of enforcement manpower within the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac). Liaw proposed that Motac make a public declaration that travellers found joining illegal tours could face a RM10,000 fine and a seven-day detention to assist investigations.
