Andhra: GoM to frame guidelines for renaming, redrawing districts
Amaravati, Aug 11 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh government's Group of Ministers, tasked with issuing guidelines on renaming districts, mandals, and villages, as well as altering their borders, is set to meet for the first time on August 13, Revenue Minister A Satya Prasad said on Monday.
He invited citizens and public representatives interested in these changes to submit their representations to the GoM ahead of the meeting.
Prasad alleged that during the previous reorganisation of districts, the former YSRCP government 'did not follow proper procedures and proceeded in a haphazard manner." He added that due to the alleged flawed reorganisation, residents in some districts face difficulties accessing services at their district headquarters.
'The GoM, constituted to oversee the renaming of districts, mandals, and villages, along with altering their borders, will convene for the first time on August 13 at the Secretariat," Prasad said in a release.
He further noted that the naming of new districts had met with public resistance and that both citizens and elected representatives have repeatedly requested the renaming of villages, mandals, and districts, as well as border adjustments.
The previous YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP government had reorganised Andhra Pradesh's 13 districts into 26 between 2019 and 2024.
Besides Prasad, the GoM will include Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, Roads & Buildings Minister BC Janardhan Reddy, Irrigation Minister N Ramanaidu, Civil Supplies Minister N Manohar, and Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav. PTI STH SSK

The court staff and lawyers said the accused, identified as Dr Chander Vibhas, deliberately scattered rice inside the packed courtroom, reported NDTV. 'The courtroom is full and the advocates present have requested the court to get the rice removed or cleaned (which is) spilt all over, and they hesitate to approach the dais for their matters to be taken up after this matter," the judge noted in her order. Black Magic Suspected The judge directed the accused to collect the rice and called for a sweeper. 'Till the time the sweeper comes, the court proceedings have been halted at the request of counsels present since they suspect black magic by the accused. The sweeper has come after 10 minutes and cleaned the floor," the order said. The accused's lawyer, appearing virtually, sought time to appear physically, while Dr Vibhas went down on his knees and apologised in the courtroom. When proceedings resumed at 2 pm, the judge underlined the seriousness of the act. 'The courtroom is a space where justice is sought and delivered and maintaining its dignity is essential for the rule of law. Disrespect towards the court or disruption of judicial proceedings sends a damaging public message, and such overt acts or behaviour of the accused not only disrupted the proceedings and undermined the judicial process but also threatened the very foundation of our legal system," she observed. The court held that the conduct amounted to an offence under Section 267 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with intentional insult or interruption to a public servant during judicial proceedings. Referring to the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, Judge Tandon added: 'This is very shocking and surprising that the present accused Dr. Chander Vibhas, who is stated to be a surgeon by profession and belonging to the educated and elite class, has acted in such an unreasonable manner and created an interruption in court proceedings." Indian tricolour hoisted atop Seattle's iconic Space Needle in historic first
New York/Seattle, Aug 16 (PTI) The Indian tricolour was hoisted at Seattle's iconic 605-feet-tall Space Needle on India's 79th Independence Day, the first time that a foreign nation's flag was raised at the popular American destination. Consul General of India in Seattle Prakash Gupta along with Mayor of Seattle Bruce Harrell and other select dignitaries from the Seattle city leadership, joined the historic and landmark occasion. 'No greater honour than this ! Raising the Tiranga on top of Seattle skyline at Space Needle," Gupta said in a post on X, along with a video of the tricolour flying high atop the iconic Seattle monument with sprawling views of the city below. Calling the commemoration a 'historic first in Seattle", the Consulate General of India in Seattle said the celebration underscored the contributions of the Indian-American diaspora in shaping the city's journey as a tech hub in the US Pacific Northwest. Later, a community reception was hosted by the Consulate at the scenic Kerry Park, with India's flag on top of the Space Needle in the backdrop. A large number of Indian-American community members turned up to witness the historic sight, the Consulate said in a press release. The reception was attended by several dignitaries including US Congressman Adam Smith, Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court Debra Stephens, Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho and Superintendent/Director of Seattle Parks and Recreation AP Diaz. Addressing the gathering, Smith welcomed the historic celebration, noting that the Indian tricolour's hoisting atop the Space Needle is a tribute to the region's diversity and the strong bonds between India and the Pacific Northwest. In a special gesture to honour India's Independence Day in the Greater Seattle area, King County, which covers 39 cities, along with Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma and Bellevue, issued official proclamations marking August 15 as India Day. Separately, several iconic buildings across Seattle were also lit up in the Indian tricolours. These included the Lumen Stadium, T-Mobile Stadium, Westin, Seattle Great Wheel and Space Needle. The Indian flag was also hoisted at the prestigious Tacoma Dome, Tacoma City Hall and at the Headquarters of Tacoma Police and Fire Departments, the Consulate said. A vibrant cultural extravaganza featuring national anthems, along with dance performances showcasing the rich diversity of Indian art forms as well as a poetic recital by renowned artist and actor Piyush Mishra also enthralled those attending the special celebrations.
