EVMs are tamper-proof, ECI says, after checking and verification process
Having received applications for C&V of EVMs — ballot units, control units, and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) — from 10 candidates who contested in the Maharashtra Assembly election in November 2024, the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer, as directed by the ECI on June 17, carried out the C&V exercise.
'CEC carried out the exercise across 10 Assembly constituencies and found that in all cases the machines passed the diagnostic tests and there has been no mismatch in the count of VVPAT slips. This exercise proves, yet again, that the EVMs are tamper-proof,' stated in the statement released by ECI.
This follows a slew of allegations from the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of discrepancies in EVMs, and mismatched numbers in EVM and VVPAT slips in the Maharashtra Assembly election.
The ECI highlighted that the C&V was conducted in the presence of eight applicants, the losing candidates, and the representatives of the candidates who contested.
The ECI stressed that the C&V had been successfully conducted on 48 ballot units, 31 control units, and 31 VVPATs of 10 Assembly constituencies. This included diagnostic tests for verifying burnt memory/microcontroller in the Assembly constituencies of Kopri-Pachpakhadi and Thane in Thane district; Khadakwasla in Pune district; Majalgaon in Beed district; Arni in Yavatmal; Yevla in Nashik district; Chandgad and Kolhapur North in Kolhapur district; and Panvel and Alibaug in Raigad district.
'After the diagnostic test, the authorised engineers from the manufacturer (Electronics Corporation of India Limited) certified that all machines passed the diagnostic tests. Thereafter, a mock poll was conducted on the machines as per the request received from the candidates. The results of the EVM (from the Control Unit) were verified with the VVPAT slips count, and no mismatch was found,' the ECI's statement read.

No claim submitted by any political party to Bihar's draft electoral roll: EC
Amid the controversy around the electoral rolls in Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday said that not even a single claim or objection has been submitted by any political party regarding the draft rolls in Bihar. EC had asked to submit claims and objections to rectify errors in the draft electoral roll, which was published earlier on August 1(PTI/Representational Image) While EC has received 5,015 claims directly from electors, there have not been any claims from political parties, reported ANI. EC has already assured that no eligible voter will be left out and no ineligible elector will be included in the final electoral roll. It had asked to submit claims and objections to rectify errors in the draft electoral roll, which was published earlier on August 1, following the completion of the Enumeration Phase under the SIR 2025. EC has received 5,015 claims and objections directly from the electors, ANI reported, citing the daily bulletin on the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar. As per the new rules, the claims by electors are to be disposed of by the concerned Electoral Registration Officer/Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (ERO/AERO) after the expiry of 7 days. Protests by the opposition have been ongoing, demanding a discussion in Parliament. Supreme Court on Wednesday directed ECI to file a reply by August 9 in response to allegations that over 65 lakh names were deleted from Bihar's draft electoral rolls without transparency during the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise. The directive was issued while hearing an application filed by the NGO Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The bench told Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for an NGO, that the reason for deletion would come in the subsequent time, as it is now only a draft list. However, Bhushan said that some political parties have been given a list of deleted voters, but they have not further clarified whether the voter is dead or has migrated.

Security Deposit: Rs 15,000, to be deposited either in cash with the RO or in the Reserve Bank of India or in a Government Treasury," the press note read. NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday alleged that the BJP-led central government is attempting to strip citizens of their rights under the guise of revising the state's voter list. Her remarks came after the BJP demanded a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state. Speaking at a public meeting in Jhargram, Banerjee said, 'I am thinking, are we really independent? I hope our citizenship will not be snatched. Please don't deprive us.' She accused the 'double-engine government' of attempting to send Indian citizens to detention centres by falsely labelling them as Rohingyas and deporting them to Bangladesh. 'The double-engine government is trying to snatch our citizenship, detain us by calling us Rohingyas, and push us back into Bangladesh,' she said. 'The BJP is always going to court. I have a ten-rupee note from 1912, and it's written in Bengali. Yet they claim there is no Bengali language.' Banerjee also claimed there is a larger NRC-related plan behind the SIR activity. She said, 'If genuine voters are removed from the voter list, then I will protest in the entire world. Even if you come to arrest me or shoot me, I will keep protesting against the insult of the Bengali language.' She also criticised the Election Commission, alleging bias. 'Our two officers received notice from ECI regarding their suspension. There is no need to fear. Eight to nine months are left for the polls, but the BJP has started to suspend people from now itself. ECI is acting as the agent of the BJP,' she said. In response, BJP MP and Bengal state president Samik Bhattacharya accused Banerjee of shielding illegal voters. 'If she thinks she can come to power for the fourth time with the help of Bangladeshis, Jihadis, Rohingyas, illegal migrants, and illegal voters, then she is mistaken,' he told ANI. Bhattacharya also criticised her remarks against the SIR process, calling it an attack on constitutional institutions.
