Nicaragua Quits UNESCO Over Press Prize Award

Nicaragua has officially withdrawn from UNESCO following the organization's decision to honor the exiled Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa with its 2025 World Press Freedom Prize.
The move marks a sharp escalation in the Ortega government's longstanding clash with international institutions over freedom of expression and press rights.

regret over the withdrawal, emphasizing that the decision will deprive Nicaraguans of crucial international cooperation in education, science, and culture.
She reaffirmed the organization's commitment to defending press freedom, stating it remains "fully within its mandate."
The award to La Prensa was recommended by an independent international jury and is part of UNESCO's annual Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, established in 1997 to honor journalists and media organizations facing threats or persecution.
La Prensa, one of Nicaragua's oldest newspapers, has been operating in exile since a government crackdown in 2021 led to the arrest of its general manager, Juan Lorenzo Holmann. He was later deported to the United States.
Authorities accused the newspaper of promoting foreign intervention, a charge widely condemned by press freedom advocates.
Nicaragua's withdrawal adds to the list of political tensions involving UNESCO. The United States previously exited the organization in 2017 under President Donald Trump, citing alleged anti-Israel bias, before rejoining in 2023 under President Joe Biden.
This latest rupture signals increasing isolation for Nicaragua on the global stage, as the international community continues to spotlight human rights and media suppression under the Ortega regime.

Three Winning Technological Projects at ICESCO Youth Training Program
Mohamed Mandour The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) concluded its program on training youth on setting up and developing small projects in the fields of technology and innovation in the Republic of Sierra Leone. The close of the training program, implemented by ICESCO's Science and Environment Sector, in partnership with the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone, was marked by the announcement of three winning projects, out of the 49 participating teams at the national level. During the two-day event, contestants presented their projects before a jury. During his remarks at the opening session, Dr. Muhammad Sharif, Advisor at the Sector of Science and Environment, stressed the importance of integrating the youth of the Islamic world in the fields of entrepreneurship, modern technology and innovation to contribute to achieving sustainable development in their communities. Winning first place, the Mamawa Muyengay Agric Business team presented their project to integrate and improve the living conditions of youth, women and the elderly in rural areas through building their capacities in the fields of cassava farming. Egypt's FM Meets Syrian Counterpart on Sidelines of Oslo Forum
Taarek Refaat Badr Abdel Ati, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration met with Asaad Al-Shaibani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Arab Republic, on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Oslo Forum. Tamim Khallaf, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Minister Abdel Aty listened to an explanation from the Syrian Minister regarding the political, security, and economic developments within Syria, as well as the internal and external challenges facing the country recently. On his part, Minister Abdel Aty reiterated Egypt's support for the Syrian people, its support for security and stability in Syria, and the preservation of the unity of its national institutions and capabilities, as well as the unity Abdel Ati stressed the importance of achieving sustainable stability in Syria by working to involve all Syrian national forces in the political process, reflecting the societal, religious, sectarian, and ethnic diversity within Syria. He also emphasized the importance of combating terrorism and addressing the phenomenon of foreign fighters to preserve sustainable stability in Syria. Pakistan Rejects Remarks by Indian External Affairs Minister
SEENEWS Press Release Pakistan categorically rejects the irresponsible remarks made by the External Affairs Minister of India during different media engagements in Brussels. The discourse of top diplomats should aim to promote peace and harmony, rather than producing bellicose punchlines. The tone and tenor of a Foreign Minister should be commensurate with his dignified status. For last several years, India has been engaged in a malicious campaign to mislead the international community through a fictitious narrative of victimhood. However, India's continued anti-Pakistan diatribe cannot hide its sponsorship of terrorism beyond its borders, nor can it cover up the state-sanctioned oppression in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Instead of pointing fingers at others, India should introspect on its own involvement in terrorism, subversion and targeted assassinations. India must also desist from concocting misleading narratives to justify its recent aggressive actions. Pakistan believes in peaceful coexistence, dialogue and diplomacy. However, it stands resolute in its intent and ability to safeguard its sovereignty against any aggression, as exemplified by its robust response to India's reckless strikes, last month. The narrative emerging from India betrays sheer frustration, following an unsuccessful military adventure against Pakistan. The Indian leaders would be well-advised to improve the standard of their discourse and discard their obsession with Pakistan.
