Chinese technological advancement has overtaken the West in key areas, including defence, artificial intelligence and green innovation, according to remarks made by Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed at a high-level global dialogue in Beijing.
Speaking at the opening of the Global Political Parties Dialogue on "Asia in a Changing World", Senator Mushahid said China had become a 'scientific superpower' and was reshaping global dynamics not through conquest, but by peaceful economic development.
'China is surpassing the West in key sectors, from J10C fighter jets and Deep Seek AI to electric vehicles,' said Mushahid, citing a recent Economist cover story. He framed the trend as part of the broader 'Rise of the East', with Asia emerging as the new global centre of gravity.

Chaired by Senator Mushahid in his role as Co-Chairman of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), the Dialogue brought together representatives from 250 political parties across 29 countries. The conference was hosted by the International Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC) in Beijing.
In a striking geopolitical assertion, Mushahid also described China as 'part of South Asia' and 'a source of stability in the region,' noting its peaceful relations with nearly all neighbours despite having borders with 14 countries. He stressed that the border dispute with India should not define bilateral relations and must be resolved peacefully.
The panel also featured senior political figures including IDCPC Minister Liu Jianchao, former Thai Speaker Bokin Balakula, and former Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar.

Liu echoed Mushahid's remarks, affirming that China does not aim to export its political model, but offers its poverty alleviation experience as a blueprint for developing nations. 'China's rise has come through reforms and development,' Liu said, adding that China remains committed to cooperation and peaceful coexistence within South Asia.
Pakistan's presence at the conference was notable, with former Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Senator Anusha Rehman, Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi, and several business and think tank representatives in attendance.
On the sidelines of the event, Liu held a separate meeting with Senator Mushahid, discussing high-level exchanges between the two countries, including his own visit to Islamabad in June 2024 and the recent trip by Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to Beijing.
The conference also received congratulatory messages from the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and Malaysia, underlining the event's significance in shaping future regional cooperation.

US Treasury Secretary says trade talks with China ‘stalled'

WASHINGTON: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday trade negotiations with China were 'a bit stalled' and suggested President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could get involved. 'I would say that they are a bit stalled,' Bessent told broadcaster Fox News when asked about trade talks with Beijing. 'I believe that we will be having more talks with them in the next few weeks, and I believe we may, at some point, have a call between the President and Party Chair Xi,' he added. The world's two biggest economies agreed this month to pause reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, a surprise de-escalation in their bitter trade war following talks between top officials in Geneva. US and China reach deal to slash trade tariffs Under the May 12 truce, Washington agreed to temporarily reduce the tariff on Chinese imports to 30 percent from 145 percent, while China said it would lower its import duty on American goods to 10 percent from 125 percent. 'I think that given the magnitude of the talks, given the complexity, that this is going to require both leaders to weigh in with each other,' Bessent said. 'They have a very good relationship, and I am confident that the Chinese will come to the table when President Trump makes his preferences known.'

China's BYD says it is against import of 5-year-old used vehicles

A Chinese automobile importer in the fast emerging new energy vehicle (NEV) market in Pakistan, BYD has opposed the government's proposal to allow the import of five-year old used cars. It believes the step would not only disrupt local manufacturers but would also hurt the environment and increase demand for more foreign exchange to import expensive petroleum oil. Speaking at a media briefing at its recently opened 'experience center' in Karachi on Thursday, BYD Vice President for Strategy and Sales Danish Khaliq said the five-year old used cars will be available at up to 60% depreciated prices in Pakistan, as the import of second-hand cars allows depression at 1% a month from its actual price. FBR may allow import of 5-year-old used vehicles This, he said, is not good for the local price sensitive market. It would not only impact the fast developing NEV market but would also shrink sales of old Japanese players in the oil-run engine segment in the country. He proposed that the government consideration to cut duty on import on CBU (imported cars) in the upcoming budget 2025-26 'should be limited to NEVs only - equating ICE (oil-run engine) with NEVs would create adverse selection for customers. ' Moreover, he said the auto sector duty reduction should be limited to those OEMs (automakers) willing to invest in Pakistan, and should dovetail into Pakistan's vision for both industrial development and sustainability of the transport sector in a growing economy. BYD partners with Mega Motor Company to deliver NEVs He added that the import of upto five-year old oil-run cars would cause environmental degradation and interrupt meeting United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, while also hurting job creation. Pakistan is already importing upto 3-year old cars at present. BYD has recently launched two electric vehicles in Pakistan. Mega Motor, its local partner in Pakistan, is setting up an NEV manufacturing plant in Gharo, Sindh. It is expected to come online next year with an installed capacity of 25,000 cars a year, Khaliq said.

Partly Facetious: Budget will have to be approved by IMF

'I was wondering….' 'Hey, a country's survival always trumps the economy, so I reckon defence outlay will increase in the forthcoming budget.' 'That's not what I was wondering about?' 'Oh well the budget will have to be approved by the International Monetary Fund or else all external resource inflows will dry up – rollovers, multilateral and bilateral loans as we need around 19.5 billion dollars for next year to…' 'Nope wasn't wondering about that either.' 'I saw the Palestinian representative to the Security Council burst into tears…' 'Nope not wondering about that either. I don't think the US policy is changing anytime soon and without that nothing will change.' 'Shares of the Chinese firm that sold us the planes that downed the French Rafale have risen and I heard their share price is rising so were you wondering if the interest on the Chinese rollovers…' 'Shush, the two transactions are separate.' 'OK I give up what were you wondering about?' 'Who is our first lady?' 'President Zardari has appointed his daughter Assefa as the first lady.' 'Can he do that?' 'Unless you amend the constitution to stipulate that only a wife can be so declared…' 'Right, perhaps they can club that together with the twenty-seventh amendment that reports suggest would change the status of an acting chief justice to a non-acting chief justice.' 'Shut up anyway, by appointing Assefa President Zardari has shown to the uneducated masses that the first lady in Pakistan is not the wife of the prime minister but…' 'Don't be facetious – the President is not left with many prerogatives after the eighteenth amendment but the prerogative to select his first lady….' 'Hmmmm but seriously the seat of power is with the Prime Minister and…' 'Really? Is that where the seat of power is?' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
