Priority given to construction of new bridge on Jalan Permatang Pauh, says Nanta
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to build a new bridge to replace the Kampung Bertam Bridge in Jalan Permatang Pauh, Seberang Perai Tengah in Penang will be given priority, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The Works Minister said an inspection by the Public Works Department (JKR) Forensic Unit in the middle of last year found that the existing bridge was in a dilapidated condition and no longer safe for long-term use.
"I take this issue seriously and will strive for the construction of the new bridge to be given priority in the coming planning and allocation.
"The people's safety is always our priority at the Works Ministry," he said in a Facebook post Friday (May 2) after surveying the Kampung Bertam Bridge, which is located near the Masjid Papan landmark.
He said that, at the end of last year, temporary repairs involving the installation of riprap, a type of coarse rock material used to protect structures from erosion, at a cost of RM90,000 were carried out to reduce the risk of structural failure.
In addition, Nanta said JKR is planning for the implementation of additional temporary repair works, such as polyurethane injection (a form of waterproofing and sealing technique using liquid polyurethane foam), to ensure the bridge can continue to be used without compromising the safety of users.
"I was informed that the Seberang Perai Tengah JKR and federal road concessionaire are constantly monitoring the bridge situation," he said. — Bernama

High Court affirms father's right to access despite maintenance arrears
KUALA LUMPUR: A father's failure to pay child maintenance should not prevent him from having access to his children, the High Court has ruled. Judge Evrol Mariette Peters said it was important to draw a clear distinction between the issues of maintenance and access, emphasising that they are legally and conceptually separate. She said that if the father had indeed defaulted on maintenance payments as ordered by the court, the mother had legal recourse through committal proceedings. Peters said this during a committal proceeding initiated by a 45-year-old man (the petitioner) against his former wife (the respondent), after she denied him access to their 11-year-old son and unilaterally moved the child to Singapore. The court ruled in favour of the petitioner and imposed a RM20,000 fine on the respondent for contempt of court. According to court documents, the petitioner claimed he had been denied access to the child and had not been provided with any information about the child's whereabouts or well-being since January 2022. It was later discovered that the respondent had relocated and unilaterally moved the child to Singapore, where they were both currently residing. The respondent claimed that the child had expressed unhappiness and refused to meet the petitioner. However, Peters said her judicial interview with the child revealed that the child's perspective was not entirely autonomous, as the responses lacked spontaneity and depth. "The child appeared to echo sentiments that seemed rehearsed or externally influenced. "He was unable to offer any substantial or cogent reasons for his refusal to have contact with the petitioner. "Instead, his justifications centred around relatively minor grievances and a few isolated incidents that he claimed had occurred several years ago," she said in her grounds of judgment dated June 4. Peters said the dynamics of a relationship between a father and child differ from those with the mother. "Parties must be reminded that the role of a father is to ensure that a child is raised in a nourishing environment. "In my view, the child's continued clinging to his mother's influence, to the exclusion of meaningful contact with his father, was not a healthy dynamic. "It is important for the child to benefit from balanced parental input, including the presence of a consistent and positive male role model. "Exposure to both maternal and paternal guidance serves not only to enrich the child's emotional development but also to foster a more balanced and resilient sense of identity," she said. The court said denying the child that opportunity based solely on his current attachment to his mother would not serve his long-term interests and could risk perpetuating a narrow and emotionally limiting environment. "In the present case, there was also no evidence before the court to suggest that the petitioner had ever been abusive, neglectful or otherwise unfit to have contact with the child. "In light of this, I was of the firm view that it was in the best interest of the child's welfare for the petitioner to continue having access."

Fire victim gets new home through community aid

Afnah, who also lost her beloved husband, a daughter, and an uncle in the tragedy, described the aid as a great blessing from Allah SWT. 'I was unable to build a new house because I am unemployed and relied on my two working daughters to support me and my youngest child who is still in school,' she said. 'After the tragedy, I had to stay with family, but now Allah SWT has answered my prayers through kind-hearted people who made this new house a reality. 'I am very grateful to all involved, especially Datuk Harun Ismail for his initiative in providing this help,' she added during the key handover ceremony at Kampung Taka. (31 May) In early August last year, the tragedy struck when the headmaster of SK Senaja, his 12-year-old daughter, and another family member died in a fire that destroyed their home in Kampung Taka. Meanwhile, Datuk Harun, who is also the Managing Director and CEO of the Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (Sogdc), revealed that approximately RM61,000 was spent to build the 500-square-foot house. He said YKNS contributed RM30,000 toward the project, while the remainder was funded by generous individuals as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR). 'The new home features two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and basic amenities including water and electricity supply, complete with lights and fans. Construction began in March and has now been fully completed for Afnah and her children to move in, offering them renewed hope,' he said. In other developments, Harun, who is also President of the Sabah Dusun Islam Association (PDIS), announced plans to build a transit hostel at SK Bawing, Pitas, in the near future. He said the new facility would replace the existing dilapidated transit house in the remote area, which is no longer safe for students to reside in. 'We are currently finalizing the design process and expect to start the RM100,000 project within two weeks, God willing. The transit hostel will include separate dormitories for boys and girls, equipped with bunk beds, toilets, and bathrooms to ensure the students' comfort,' he explained. 'PDIS has previously built a similar facility that is still operational at Kampung Mendurian. 16 UK-Bred Dogs To Join JBPM K9 Unit By November
KOTA BHARU, June 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 16 dogs from the United Kingdom (UK) to be received by the Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) K9 Unit are expected to begin duties in November. JBPM director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said each dog costs around RM150,000, adding that five will be deployed to Sabah, two to Sarawak and the remainder to the department's K9 unit base at Jalan Klang Lama in Kuala Lumpur. 'We expect all the dogs to arrive in Malaysia by October, before commencing duties in November after undergoing several processes and training. 'For the selection process, three officers from JBPM, the Veterinary Department, and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will be sent to the UK. Upon arrival in Malaysia, the dogs will undergo a familiarisation process with their new handlers,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the 2025 Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption forum here today, also attended by Kelantan JBPM director Farhan Sufyan Borhan. It had been reported that the JBPM K9 Unit will receive 16 new dogs from the UK, valued at RM2.4 million, this year to replace approximately half of the 34 K9 dogs that have reached 10 to 12 years of age, equivalent to 60 years in human age. -- BERNAMA
