The 61-year-old chain, which has 3,320 locations across the US, had the lowest sales of the six Inspire Brands chains in 2024. But Arby's is not the only restaurant facing a wave of customer complaints. Arby's ranked second in the list of sub-par chains, with only Panera Bread receiving more customer complaints.
The fast casual restaurant has faced backlash for ingredients, menu offerings and deaths resulting in lawsuits . Social media users were furious during the spring after the brand shifted towards bread that has been par-baked and frozen and shuttered fresh dough factories . According to Eat This, Not That!, customers are unhappy with the trajectory the 38-year-old company is taking.
'Panera was amazing 20 years ago. The quality has gone way down,' a disappointed customer wrote on social media. 'I got 3 things a sandwich, a flatbread pizza and something else.. it tasted like the food was made by 5 year olds that were learning about food preparation,' a customer shared on Reddit . 'And just so stupidly over priced for something I could probably go to Target and get at half the cost and better quality.'
The other brands that Americans claim have 'fallen off hard' include Sonic, Burger King, KFC, Subway and Taco Bell. Sonic's customers have slammed the restaurant lately — including one that claimed it ' never hit the mark .' Although it is unafraid to come at McDonald's with three $1 items , this was not enough to stop one customer branding the chain 'beyond mediocre.'
Burger King customers have been struggling to get over the chain's 'bland' offerings, which could be one of the reasons behind its first quarter sales decline . KFC has earned a number of complaints despite being the world's largest chicken chain. A customer insisted its chicken had 'too much breading' and was 'too salty' — along with a claim of it being 'too pricy.'

US budget deficit forecast $1 trillion higher over next decade, watchdog says
WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - U.S. federal budget deficits will be nearly $1 trillion higher over the next decade than projected in January by the Congressional Budget Office as a result of tax and spending legislation and tariffs, a budget watchdog said on Wednesday. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget's latest forecasts show a cumulative deficit of $22.7 trillion from fiscal 2026 to 2035, compared to the CBO's January forecast of $21.8 trillion, which was based on laws and policies that were in place before U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January. The CBO, Congress' non-partisan budget referee agency, said on Monday, opens new tab that it will not issue its customary mid-year budget update this year and will issue its next 10-year budget and economic outlook in early 2026, offering no explanation for the move. The CRFB, which advocates for deficit reduction, projected a $1.7 trillion deficit in fiscal 2025 or 5.6% of GDP, down slightly from $1.83 trillion in 2024 and the CBO's 2025 projection of $1.87 trillion in January. But it said deficits steadily rise over the decade, reaching $2.6 trillion or 5.9% of GDP by 2035. The new CRFB estimates include the budget effects of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act tax and spending bill, as well as Trump's tariffs that are currently in place. But like CBO, they do not include the dynamic economic effects on growth from these changes, a forecasting rule that has drawn criticism from the Trump administration. The group projects the tax cut and spending bill to increase deficits, including interest, by $4.6 trillion through 2035, adding another year to the CBO's $4.1 trillion cost estimate through 2034. But CRFB estimates that this will be offset by $3.4 trillion worth of extra import duty revenue over the next decade due to Trump's new tariffs that are currently in place. New rules restricting eligibility for health insurance subsidies will reduce deficits by another $100 billion through 2035, and Congress' rescission of prior funding to foreign aid, public broadcasting and other programs would save another $100 billion if sustained over a decade, CRFB said. Net interest payments on the national debt will total $14 trillion over the decade, CRFB projected, rising from nearly $1 trillion or 3.2% of GDP in 2025 to $1.8 trillion or 4.1% of GDP in 2035. The forecasts are based on legislative and tariff changes since January but keep CBO's economic forecasts unchanged. Under an alternative scenario forecast by CRFB, the budget picture looks far worse, boosting deficits nearly $7 trillion higher than the CBO baseline. This scenario would see a significant part of Trump's tariffs canceled if the Court of International Trade's ruling against many of Trump's new tariffs is upheld, cutting $2.4 trillion from revenues over a decade. The alternative scenario also assumes extension of a number of temporary tax cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, including tax breaks on overtime, tips, Social Security income and car loan interest, higher state and local tax deduction allowances and full expensing of factory investments, adding $1.7 trillion to deficits over 10 years. CRFB's alternative scenario also ditches the CBO's projection of a decline in 10-year U.S. Treasury yields over the decade to about 3.8%. If that interest rate stays at the current level of about 4.3%, interest costs would grow by about $1.6 trillion through 2035, CRFB said. The total 2035 debt-to-GDP ratio would grow from 118% in the CBO January baseline to 120% under the CRFB's projected baseline scenario and 134% under the CRFB's alternative scenario.

Aug 19 (Reuters) - Billionaire Elon Musk is quietly putting the brakes on plans to start his new political party, telling allies he wants to focus on his companies, the Wall Street Journal said on Tuesday, citing people with knowledge of the plans. Musk unveiled the 'America Party' in July after a public dispute with President Donald Trump on the tax cut and spending bill. He has recently been focused in part on maintaining ties with Vice President JD Vance, the paper said, and has acknowledged to associates that forming a political party would damage his relationship with Vance. Musk, the world's richest man, and his associates have told people close to Vance that the billionaire is considering using some of his financial resources to back Vance if he decides to run for president in 2028, the paper said. The CEO of Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab and SpaceX spent nearly $300 million in 2024 to help Trump and other Republicans get elected, exerting enormous influence in the first few weeks of Trump's term as head of the newly created efficiency department (DOGE). Reuters could not immediately verify the Journal report. Tesla and the White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours. Vance, who had called for a truce following Musk's all-public feud with Trump, reaffirmed his position this month and said he had asked Musk to return to the Republican fold. Tesla shares are down more than 18% this year after it posted in July its worst quarterly sales decline in more than a decade and profit that missed Wall Street targets, though its profit margin was better than many had feared. Musk also warned of "a few rough quarters" after the end of support for electric vehicles by the Trump administration. Investors worry whether he will be able to devote enough time and attention to Tesla after locking horns with Trump over his ambitions for a new political party.

Scotch whisky distillery dream and what matters most now
All the way from when I started covering the dream of a Scotch whisky distillery on Harris, years before it came to fruition with its 2015 opening, Mr Erlanger has been a constant. I spoke to the Scotch industry veteran in the early days about the aspiration of US-born musicologist Anderson Bakewell to build a distillery on Harris, and about the drive to raise funding for it. Mr Erlanger was passionate about the vision, and did a great job of ensuring the funding was secured for the project. This appeared throughout to be a labour of love, and it was also clearly a very major undertaking. In an article in May 2012 in The Herald, I wrote: 'Potential funders of the first ever legal Scotch whisky distillery on Harris have expressed interest in putting up about one-third of the £10 million investment required, the managing director-designate of the project has revealed. 'Simon Erlanger, a former sales and marketing director of Scotch whisky distiller Glenmorangie, told The Herald that a total of £10m would be required to build the distillery at Tarbert and to provide the working capital to cover costs, including barley and barrels, ahead of first revenues. 'He hopes to raise this money from the private and public sector within a 'matter of months', to enable construction of the distillery to start in early 2013 and operations to start by summer 2014.' The distillery opened its doors in September 2015 - a little later than planned back in the spring of 2012 but a very impressive feat nonetheless. A couple of years later, I had the pleasure of travelling to Harris to interview Mr Erlanger. By that time, the distillery was in full swing with its award-winning Isle of Harris gin. The spirit that would become The Hearach single-malt Scotch whisky, named after the Gaelic word for a native of Harris, was maturing in the barrels. Read more And what was probably most striking was the importance of the employment the distillery had brought to Harris, with Mr Bakewell's vision realised. Mr Erlanger told me in 2017: 'It was his vision to do something to stem that population decline [on Harris]. 'He didn't come from the [Scotch whisky] industry. It took someone from outside the industry to come up with the idea. He just had this feeling that distilleries tend to last for generations, rather than [being] short-term ventures.' By August 2023, as Isle of Harris Distillery prepared to launch The Hearach the following month with major growth ambitions to swiftly double the size of the enterprise to a near-£8 million annual turnover business, it employed 45 local people. This was around double what had been promised. Mr Erlanger noted at that stage the impending millionth bottle of gin milestone for the distillery and the approaching launch date for The Hearach, and said: 'We talk about this as being the end of the beginning. We now go into a different momentum, a different era. In a way, we have gone through a lot of growing pains [with] a very inexperienced team. 'We have 45 local people now, which is double what we said we would deliver.' Executive chairman Ron MacEachran observed at that stage that one-third of this workforce was under 30. Like the broader Scotch whisky sector, Isle of Harris Distillery has sadly encountered tougher trading conditions in recent times. Read more In April, it announced 'deeply regrettable' plans for redundancies 'in a move to safeguard the future' of the business. When these job cuts were announced, Mr Erlanger said: 'In a move to safeguard the future of our business, we are introducing a restructuring programme which will see reduced production and workforce at the distillery. 'Much like our colleagues in the wider spirits industry, we are facing challenging headwinds which have led to some incredibly difficult decisions. Following a number of cost-cutting measures, voluntary redundancy is being offered to staff in the first instance, with compulsory to follow thereafter if we do not fulfil our cost-reduction target. It is deeply regrettable we find ourselves in this situation and would like to take the opportunity to thank our entire team, particularly those affected by the changes, for their dedication and contribution to the business.' It seemed clear that Mr Erlanger, and also Mr MacEachran when I interviewed him that day, were acutely aware of the effect of these job losses on the workforce and the island community. Asked by The Herald last week about the outcome of the redundancy programme, a spokeswoman for Isle of Harris Distillers said that 18 staff had 'chosen to take voluntary redundancy earlier this year, with the company supporting them to find employment elsewhere'. While it is clearly a positive that compulsory redundancies were avoided, no one should underestimate the impact of these job losses on people and their families, and on Harris. However, we should also not lose sight of the fact that this distillery, built from scratch, still employs 31 people, including four seasonal staff. This is crucial employment for these workers and their families, and for Harris. Mr MacEachran last week highlighted his confidence in the future. Declaring 'change provides us with an opportunity for renewed growth', he said: 'Recent weeks have seen the pink ceilidh bottle sell out in just 45 minutes, showing ongoing demand for the premium gin we produce here on the island. "Alongside this we have recently successfully launched global travel retail products - The Hearach croft strength malt whisky and Isle of Harris gin tidal strength - allowing consumers to sample a taste of Harris in new and different ways. New listings also continue to be achieved in Scotland, London and further afield, while new product innovation continues on island.' Mr MacEachran, when asked at the time the redundancy programme was announced in the spring if the workforce could rise again in the future, said: 'It is too early to say but one would hope that if the business was back on a growth journey that would mean more employment.' Whatever the future holds - hopefully it will be prosperity - Mr Erlanger's crucial role in creating what has been built must be recognised for the great achievement that it is. Isle of Harris Distillers highlighted the vital part played by Mr Erlanger when it announced his retirement last week. It said: 'Simon has been instrumental in the success of the business since its inception. Under his leadership, the distillery has established two well-respected international spirits brands and has laid the foundations to achieve its purpose of providing multi-generational employment for the Isle of Harris. The board would like to thank Simon for all he has achieved and for his dedication to the company and the island.' Mr Erlanger has achieved so much, and with great passion. What is so important now as Isle of Harris Distillers moves on to a new chapter is that it prospers over the long term and continues to provide such valuable jobs on Harris, enabling people to stay rather than being forced to move away because of a lack of employment.
