Danielle Spencer, 'What's Happening!!' child star, dead at 60: 'Forever embraced'

Yahoo20 hours ago
Danielle Spencer, a child star best known for her role on the ABC sitcom "What's Happening!!" in the 1970s, has reportedly died. She was 60.
Spencer died Aug. 11, according to CBS 6 and Forbes. The actress's death followed a prolonged battle with cancer, CBS 6 reported. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, though she later recovered. It's not clear whether her death resulted from the same illness.
"I came into the room, there were about five doctors in there," she said in an interview with CBS at the time, "So that scared the living daylights out of me. And they told me I had breast cancer."
Following the diagnosis, she told the outlet she opted for a double mastectomy. She added that chemotherapy took longer because of a car accident years prior that left parts of her body paralyzed.

On "What's Happening!!" Spencer turned herself into a household name at just 11 years old, playing the sassy and quick-witted Dee Thomas. The show ran for three seasons in the mid-70s and later returned for a revival, "What's Happening Now!!" which aired from 1985 to 1988.
Her time on the show made her the first black female child to star regularly in a television series, a distinction honored in an exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington.
Opting for a career off-screen after her sitcom run, she attended school to study veterinary science and became a vet in 1996, serving the Richmond, Virginia, area until her death.
Haywood Nelson, who appeared alongside Spencer in "What's Happening!!" took to Instagram to mourn his former co-star.
"Brilliance! It comes in a great many forms," Haywood wrote in an Aug. 12 post. "Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body. We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer."
"We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, 'What's Happening' cast member, veterinarian animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine," he added. "Our Shero. Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced."

Georgina Rodríguez's massive engagement ring from Cristiano Ronaldo is breaking the internet, with the rock estimated to be worth 7 figures

The bride-to-be posted the photo of the impressive diamond ring that broke the internet. Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine model Georgina Rodríguez announced their engagement on Monday after eight years of dating. The bride-to-be shared the momentous news in an Instagram post, with a photo of her massive sparkler of an engagement ring and the caption, written in Spanish: 'Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives.' The post has since broken the internet, with over 11.3 million likes as of Tuesday morning. The official details of Rodríguez's bling, like the number of carats and how much it's worth, have yet to be revealed by the power couple and their unknown jeweler, but that hasn't stopped jewelry experts from weighing in. Here's what we know so far about the 'four C's' (cut, clarity, color and carat) of the impressive diamond ring: What kind of cut is the diamond? Abdulla BelJafla, creative director of Gafla, who shared his insight with Vogue Arabia, said the main diamond in the center is an oval-cut, which maximizes its brilliance. 'A perfectly proportioned oval (with a 1.30–1.50 length-to-width ratio) offers symmetry on the hand,' he told the magazine. 'While many ovals exhibit the subtle 'bow-tie effect,' this piece appears to have exceptional light dispersion, minimizing it entirely.' How many estimated carats are there? Rodríguez's oval-cut diamond ring is approximately 37 carats in total, according to jewelry experts. The center oval stone weighs about 35 carats, Tobias Kormind, the managing director of 77 Diamonds in London, told People. He believes the center stone is flanked by oval stones on the sides, about one carat each, set in platinum. BelJafla also assessed the stunner to be about 37 carats total and estimated the center diamond to be "between 22 and 30 carats," he told Vogue Arabia. Let's get down to brass tacks. How much do we think this ring is worth? It's estimated to be worth seven figures. 'If the diamond is natural and of exceptional quality in the D-F color range with flawless or near-flawless clarity, its value could easily exceed around $2 million," Laura Taylor, engagement ring specialist at Lorel Diamonds, told People. Meanwhile, Kormind estimates that Rodríguez is carrying around a $5 million ring on her finger. 'Experts value the ring between U.S. $4 million and U.S. $5 million,' BelJafla told Vogue Arabia, 'given the size, flawless clarity, and D color of the stones. … A ring like this is quite rare if it's a natural diamond.' What else do we know about the engaged couple? Ronaldo, 40, and Rodríguez, 31, have been together for eight years. They have a total of four children together: twins Eva Maria and Mateo, 8 (born via surrogacy); daughter Alana, 7; and daughter Bella, 3. Ronaldo also has a 15-year-old son, Cristiano Jr., from a previous relationship. The couple previously announced the death of Bella's twin brother, Ángel, in April 2022. Solve the daily Crossword

Jason Momoa reveals he nearly drowned while surfing in Hawaii: ‘I gave up'

The King of the Atlantis nearly lost his life in the water. Jason Momoa appeared on the 'Smartless' podcast Monday and recounted the time he almost drowned off the coast of Maui 18 years ago. 'I was doing this paddle, we went in at Jaws,' the 'Aquaman' star, 46, said, referring to the island's biggest surf break. 'We paddled like 13 miles down the coast. You're kind of almost a mile offshore, and then my leash snapped.' 8 Jason Momoa in an Instagram video. Jason Momoa/Instagram Momoa explained that he was 'trained pretty well' but he still 'took quite a few [waves] on the head.' 'They're pretty big, like 10-foot Hawaiian waves,' he recalled. 'But I'm probably half a mile at that point offshore. And it's actually this place is called 'S–f—s' because there's all this water that pulls out and of a channel there, [and] you just get hit with these waves.' 8 Jason Momoa in 'Aquaman 2.' ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection 8 Jason Momoa surfing in Hawaii in Dec. 2021. I was really on the outer reef and they couldn't see me,' Momoa explained. 'I had my paddle and I was waving it and they couldn't see me, and the waves were so big.' The 'Game of Thrones' alum said that the terrifying moment made him think of his and Lisa Bonet's then-3-month-old daughter, Lola Iolani. 'I looked in, and I was just like—my daughter at that time was 3 months old—and I just lost it,' he remembered. 8 Jason Momoa at the 'Highest 2 Lowest' red carpet at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Then my my toe hit the outer reef. I literally gave up, and I'm screaming inside.' 8 Jason Momoa in 'Chief of War.' 'I have seven more miles to paddle. My feet are covered in blood, and I'm just literally [with] my ancestors just paddling the rest of this way, head down, and we get out,' Momoa said, confirming they made it out of the ocean. 8 Jason Momoa swimming in Kauai, Hawaii. 8 Jason Momoa at the 'Chief of War' premiere in Hawaii on July 18. I couldn't stop for my kids, I couldn't stop for my ex, I couldn't stop smoking,' he explained. 'And the moment I came out, I never smoked again. Like, I just died. I tried and tried, but I couldn't do it again because I just gave up. Like, I gave up my life.'

Cat's Behavior With Golden Retriever vs Husky Leaves Viewers in Hysterics

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. How a cat behaves towards their husky sibling versus their golden retriever sibling has left the internet in stitches. Instagram user @maplebaconbutter shared a video showing their cat affectionately lying on top of their golden retriever, before cutting to footage of the same cat energetically pouncing multiple times on their husky. The hysterical compilation has already garnered almost 135,000 likes and 869,000 views on Instagram. "How our cat acts with our golden," the text overlay reads as the golden and the cat enjoy a quiet snuggle. "Vs with our Husky," appears next, as the orange cat and husky engage in playful sparring. "His 2 personalities," the owner captioned the post. Huskies are known for their high energy and playful nature, but that can sometimes be overwhelming for cats—especially those that are more reserved. While some huskies can get along with cats if introduced early and properly supervised, their prey drive and boisterous personalities mean they may be more inclined to chase or play rough, according to Dogster. Golden retrievers, on the other hand, are generally considered one of the most cat-friendly breeds. Their gentle temperament, affectionate nature, and lower prey drive make them more likely to form close, calm bonds with feline companions, Dogster notes. The cat in question appears to be a Maine Coon, a breed often celebrated for its friendliness toward dogs. Maine Coons are known for their confident, sociable personalities and ability to adapt to various types of canine companions—including both high-energy breeds like huskies and laid-back ones like golden retrievers. "He likes the golden more cuz it looks like him just larger," suggested one user. "He matches their energies. Huskies are super energetic so he plays with him. The golden looks a bit older and a lot more chill so he gets the snuggles," said another. "Matches energy of each dog. I bet the husky loves it. Hehe," said another viewer. "Cuddle buddy vs Wrestling buddy," observed another user. "He speaks their love language," said Syd. "Golden retriever: Gentle fluffy companion. Husky: Worthy opponent. Capable of offering a warrior's death," shared another user. "Me with my bf vs me with my friends," joked another. Newsweek reached out to @maplebaconbutter for comment via Instagram.
