Jesus Ferreira (goal, assist) leads Sounders past Austin FC
Danny Musovski also scored and goalkeeper Stefan Frei made one save in posting the shutout for the Sounders (8-6-5, 29 points), who snapped a five-match losing streak in all competitions -- with three of those coming against international powers Botafogo, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup. Frei has 999 saves in his Sounders career, leaving him one shy of becoming just the second goalie in league history, behind only former Real Salt Lake standout Nick Rimando, to make 1,000 saves for a single franchise.
Musovski snapped an eight-match scoreless streak in the 54th minute to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead. Ferreira sent a long lead pass to Musovski on the counterattack, with the forward dribbling the ball into the penalty area before putting a 12-yard shot through the legs of defender Oleksandr Svatok and off the inside of the left post.
Ferreira opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. The Sounders won a 50-50 ball just shy of midfield in their own end of the pitch and Albert Rusnak sent a pass down the left wing to Paul Rothrock. The midfielder drove into the penalty area before sending a cross to the far post for Ferreira, whose blistering volley from 5 yards out left All-Star goalkeeper Brad Stuver with no chance.
Stuver made four saves for Austin (7-8-5, 26 points), which had a two-match winning streak snapped.
The Sounders nearly took the lead in the 11th minute as Musovski put a shot from the left side of the penalty area between Stuver's legs, but the goalie got just enough of the ball that it deflected off the left post before ricocheting into the middle of the 6-yard box. Defender Guilherme Biro nearly scored an own goal on the rebound, with his attempted clearance bouncing off the same left post.
Austin's lone shot on goal came after a Sounders turnover deep in their own end in the 34th minute. Brandon Vazquez's 17-yard shot was saved by a well-positioned Frei, who dropped to his knees to make the catch near the right post.

The 19-year-old debuted with the Magic in the NBA Summer League, averaging 16.5 points, 2.5 assists, 1.5 rebounds and one block on 55.6% shooting from the field in two appearances. He produced 19 points and four assists in his last game on July 13. Richardson projects to check a lot of boxes for the Magic and was a player they were even looking at with the 16th pick before trading it away. He faces an uphill battle vying for rotational minutes, but he appeared to pass the test in his first action this summer.

Commanders activate Terry McLaurin off the PUP list as contract extension talks linger
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday amid lingering contract extension talks with the All-Pro wide receiver. McLaurin, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022, reported to the team on July 27 after skipping the initial four days of training camp and June's mandatory minicamp. That turned a holdout to a hold-in but has not necessarily accelerated extension talks or returned McLaurin to practice. The team placed its top target on the PUP list with an ankle injury, and McLaurin requested a trade on July 31. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels fueled an offense that ranked fifth in points scored last season and carried the Commanders to a 12-5 regular-season record and the franchise's first NFC championship game appearance since 1991. They haven't built off that success in camp with the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the New York Giants approaching. Three other offensive starters have missed significant time with injuries. The activation comes one day after offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury expressed a desire to work with a full lineup. ‘Different': Kevin Durant on Alperen Sengun's elite play for Turkey
Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun were both Western Conference All-Stars last season, and they're now teammates in Houston. This week, Durant is watching his co-star shine in European play. As they gear up for the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2025 competition, Turkey lost Friday's preparation match versus Germany by two points. It was part of the DBB SuperCup and effectively a road game for the Turkish squad, since the game was played in Munich. But that narrow defeat certainly wasn't the fault of Alperen Sengun, an NBA All-Star center with the Houston Rockets. In under 32 minutes played, Sengun led the way with 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists while making 8-of-11 shots (72.7%) and 7-of-9 free throws (77.8%). That total included a number of highlight moves, most notably a crossover spin from the perimeter that led to a running dunk. It's not a move that is seen frequently from big men, but Sengun isn't a normal big man. One person who noticed was new Rockets teammate Kevin Durant, a future Hall of Famer and former Most Valuable Player (MVP). Responding to a clip of the move, Durant simply summed it up with one word. 'Different.' Durant was responding to an X user who asked if any other big men were able to move as fluidly in space. The list is quite small, and it's a unique skill set that Durant will try to help Sengun maximize once training camp opens for the 2025-26 Rockets next month.
