Iran's Khamenei calls US nuclear proposal against national interest
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday a US proposal for a nuclear agreement was against the national interest, amid sharp differences over whether Tehran can continue to enrich uranium.
The longtime foes have held five rounds of talks since April to thrash out a new accord to replace the deal with major powers that US President Donald Trump abandoned during his first term in 2018.
On Saturday, Iran said it had received "elements" of the US proposal through Omani mediators, the details of which have not been publicly disclosed.
"The proposal presented by the Americans is 100 percent against" notions of independence and self-reliance, Khamenei said in a televised speech, invoking ideals of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
"Independence means not waiting for the green light from America and the likes of America."
Iran's enrichment of uranium has emerged as a major point of contention.
Trump said on Monday his administration would not allow "any" enrichment, despite Tehran's insistence it is its right under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Khamenei said enrichment is "key" to Iran's nuclear programme and that the United States "cannot have a say" on the issue.
"If we have 100 nuclear power plants but don't have enrichment, they will be of no use to us," because "nuclear power plants need fuel" to operate, he said.
"If we cannot produce this fuel domestically, we have to reach out to the United States, which may have dozens of conditions."
The New York Times reported Tuesday that the US proposal includes "an arrangement that would allow Iran to continue enriching uranium at low levels" as the US and other countries "work out a more detailed plan intended to block Iran's path to a nuclear weapon".
It said the proposal would see the United States facilitating "the building of nuclear power plants for Iran and negotiate the construction of enrichment facilities managed by a consortium of regional countries".
Iran has previously said it is open to temporary limits on its enrichment of uranium, and is willing to consider the establishment of a regional nuclear fuel consortium.
But it has stressed that such a consortium is "in no way intended to replace Iran's own uranium enrichment programme".
Iran's chief negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said in a Wednesday post on X: No enrichment, no deal. No nuclear weapons, we have a deal."
On Monday, Araghchi held talks in Cairo with Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In its latest quarterly report last week, the IAEA said Iran had further stepped up its production of highly enriched uranium.
In a separate report, it also criticised "less than satisfactory" cooperation from Tehran, particularly in explaining past cases of nuclear material found at undeclared sites.
Iran currently enriches uranium to 60 percent, far above the 3.67-percent limit set in the 2015 deal but still short of the 90 percent threshold needed for a nuclear warhead.
The reports came ahead of a planned IAEA Board of Governors meeting in Vienna later this month which will review Iran's nuclear activities.
Washington and other Western governments have continued to accuse Iran of seeking a nuclear weapons capability. Iran insists its programme is for peaceful purposes only.
The 2015 deal provided Iran with relief from international sanctions in return for UN-monitored restrictions on its nuclear activities.
Trump reimposed US sanctions when he quit the agreement in 2018 and has since tightened them with secondary sanctions against third parties who violate them.
Britain, France and Germany, the three European countries who were party to the 2015 deal, are currently weighing whether to trigger the sanctions "snapback" mechanism in the accord.
The mechanism would reinstate UN sanctions in response to Iranian non-compliance -- an option that expires in October.
Iran has criticised the IAEA report as unbalanced, saying it relied on "forged documents" provided by its arch foe Israel.

'Census delay no accident, delimitation not a coincidence', says Stalin
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Friday accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately delaying the national Census and orchestrating the delimitation process with a hidden agenda. Calling the Census delay 'no accident' and the delimitation exercise 'no coincidence,' he said, 'The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.' In a post on social media, he alleged: 'There is a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished.' He argued that states which disregarded population control for years would be rewarded with additional seats in Parliament. This, he said, distorts the federal structure and unfairly benefits neglect over progress. Stalin noted that he had already 'warned about this design' and cited senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's detailed explanation of 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' He said it was time to remain vigilant and prepare strategies to defend the South's representation. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP government the means to restructure parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states,' he alleged. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the concerns of affected states will be considered, Stalin described such assurances as vague. He insisted that the situation calls for a clear commitment in Parliament and the introduction of a Constitutional amendment. He added: 'Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated. The Union government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with.' Stalin warned that if delimitation is carried out using the 2027 Census, the democratic influence of the southern states would be severely diminished. He also criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), saying, 'Betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival,' but that the people of Tamil Nadu, under the DMK's leadership, would not allow the state to suffer for its developmental success.

Fading memories of freedom
As distance grows from their freedom movements, both India and Bangladesh are reshaping what it means to be anti-colonial The current regime in Bangladesh wants to disconnect the country from its history of freedom struggle against Pakistan. It has removed the portrait of its founding President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from currency notes. It is also seeking new friendship with Pakistan. The people of Bangladesh fought two freedom struggles in the 20th century: the first to liberate themselves from the British, and then from Pakistan. It is a place that won freedom twice within 24 years: in 1947 and 1971. The ideas of the self and oppressor change periodically. Bangladesh, now 55 years away from its second freedom struggle, thinks Islam is a more powerful bond for the people than language, which had separated it from what was then West Pakistan. Correspondingly, the iconography of the nation is being altered. India's collective memory of the freedom struggle is also undergoing a transformation. The most powerful political force of India today, Hindutva, sees independence won in 1947 only as a partial victory. Its more expansive version of anti-colonialism sees Islam and western modernity as vestiges of foreign influence on the nation. It is trying to scrape those influences from public consciousness through various interventions. This new decolonisation drive is directed inward: amending curricula, laws, administrative structures, and more. The euphoria of a newly crossed milestone for a nation lasts for a finite time and its lingering sweetness fades with the passage of generations. The new wave of Islamic radicalism in Bangladesh poses new security threats for India. The Sheikh Hasina government in Dhaka was sensitive to India's security concerns, and that was one of the reasons for the Islamist hostility towards her. Uttar Pradesh and Maine: sister States? What is common between Maine and Uttar Pradesh, States in the United States and India, respectively. Nothing really, you might think, but these States have recently barred or disqualified lawmakers from legislatures for what has been determined as unacceptable speech. Free speech and hate speech remain a vexed tangle in liberal politics world over. Maine Representative Laurel Libby has been barred from voting in the House. The Republican had posted a photo of a transgender student who won a girls' pole vault competition after finishing fifth in the boys' category two years earlier. She stands by her position and is seeking judicial intervention to restore her voting right. In UP, Abbas Ansari, an MLA of a party that is allied to the ruling BJP, has been expelled from the Legislative Assembly after he was convicted in a hate speech case from 2022. He had allegedly threatened the local administration during the Uttar Pradesh election. Simulating war and diplomacy Speaking of speech, there is a new status in fabricating information, which is honourably mentioned as 'narrative building,' in strategic commentaries these days. In love and war, all is fair, including lies. Misinformation has acquired such a halo of virtue. For all the frothing at the mouth about democracy being threatened by post-truth politics until recently, these days, strategists around the world are talking about the imperative of winning the 'narrative war' and poisoning the enemy's information pipelines! War itself is akin to a simulated computer game, as Ukraine's recent attack on Russian targets showed. It is only appropriate that there is also a voiceover of a suitable story to go with it. Many philosophers and thinkers have wondered whether we are living in a simulation. In the emerging landscape of virtual reality and AI, these questions are resurfacing. There are physicists who argue that a table made of wood and a table in VR are both equally real, or equally simulated. If we are already living in a simulated universe, we are creating a simulation within a simulation, as strategy! If what is perceived matters more, the reality as we thought of it until now, will cease to be relevant.

Bakrid 2025: Sweet Eid Mubarak wishes, messages & WhatsApp status for husband on Eid-ul-Adha
Eid Mubarak wishes for husband: Eid-ul-Adha, also called the "Festival of Sacrifice" or Bakrid, is one of the most important Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims around the world. It is the second most significant celebration in the Islamic calendar, coming after Eid al-Fitr. This sacred festival remembers the moment when Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was ready to sacrifice his son to show his obedience to God (Allah). According to Islamic belief, just as he was about to carry out the sacrifice, Allah replaced his son with a ram, showing that true faith and devotion are what truly matter. Eid-ul-Adha begins on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, which is the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and the festival lasts between two to four days, depending on the country. As the Islamic calendar is based on moon cycles and is 10 to 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, the dates of Eid-ul-Adha change every year. How Muslims Celebrate Eid-ul-Adha During this festival, Muslims come together to offer special Eid prayers, which are usually held in large groups at mosques or open fields. People listen to sermons by religious leaders, dress in traditional clothes, and visit friends and relatives. One of the key rituals is Qurbani—the sacrifice of an animal such as a goat, sheep, or camel—to remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim. The meat from the animal is divided into three parts: One part for the family. One part for relatives and friends. One part for the poor and needy. The festival also encourages acts of kindness, giving to charity, and spending quality time with loved ones. It is a moment for reflection, thankfulness, and showing care for those less fortunate. When is Eid-ul-Adha in 2025? In 2025, Eid-ul-Adha is expected to begin on the evening of Saturday, 7th June. However, the exact date may change depending on the sighting of the moon, as Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar.
