Scientists stumble upon game-changing 'triple efficiency' in pursuit of powerful fuel: 'We plan to move forward'
A team of researchers in South Korea may have just reshaped the future of green fuel. While developing a cleaner, more efficient way to produce ammonia, which is a compound that is widely used in fertilizers and looked at as a next-generation fuel, they stumbled upon a catalyst that delivers three times the output of the previous methods.
The new catalyst, made of ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles, was designed to increase efficiency in ammonia synthesis under milder conditions. According to a study reported by Tech Xplore, it achieved what researchers called "triple efficiency," which could slash pollution output and reduce the high energy costs that are associated with ammonia production.
The increase in efficiency solves the issue of ammonia made at a global scale, mainly through the Haber-Bosch process, which requires an intense amount of heat and pressure. That method is responsible for nearly 1.3% of global planet-warming pollution like CO2, as per the International Energy Agency. The newly developed catalyst works at lower temperatures and pressures, which would cut down on both pollution and production costs.
The study mentions that the structure of the catalyst is what makes the key difference. Researchers used a polyol-based method to expose more "B5-sites", a type of atomic configuration on the catalyst surface that boosts activity. The sites allow nitrogen and hydrogen to bond more easily and form ammonia and improve the overall efficiency.
"We plan to move forward with performance verification through mass production of pellet-type catalysts and application in various ammonia cracking systems," study author Dr. Jeong Woo Han said in the Tech Xplore report.
If scaled up, this could help industries reduce their carbon footprint while also enabling clean hydrogen transport. Since ammonia can store and move hydrogen, it's seen as a promising energy carrier in an economy that no longer relies on carbon pollution.
While there is no set rollout timeline, the researchers believe their method can be adopted using existing infrastructure, which could help speed things up.

Support Needed for Psoriasis Patients' Poor-Quality Sleep
TOPLINE: Patients with psoriasis have significantly more difficulty sleeping, particularly in new environments, than matched individuals without the condition. Problems sleeping also rose in conjunction with disease severity. METHODOLOGY: Researchers enrolled 12 patients diagnosed with psoriasis and 12 control subjects matched for age, sex, and BMI to undergo 3 nights of sleep-lab analysis. People with obstructive sleep apnea were excluded from the study. Patients completed disease questionnaires to assess severity and other disease characteristics and underwent blood draws to look for inflammatory markers. TAKEAWAY: Multivariate analyses showed that on the first, or adaptation, night of of the 3-night sleep lab study, patients with psoriasis spent significantly less time asleep while in bed (76% vs 89%), had significantly less total sleep time (363 vs 421 minutes), and experienced significantly more nighttime awakening (89 vs 40 minutes) than matched controls (P < .05 for all), indicating poorer adaptability and greater sensitivity to disruption. Patients with more severe psoriasis also saw less time asleep while in bed, lower total sleep time, longer time until REM sleep, and lower percentage of time spent in REM sleep during the study. Overall, across the 3 nights of the study, patients with psoriasis slept nearly an hour less each night than healthy controls, a finding that did not reach statistical significance (P = .13). The difference persisted after adjusting for itch, anxiety, and depression, all factors that can influence sleep quality. IN PRACTICE: 'We don't have the time to tackle all the different comorbidities in patients [with psoriasis] and talk about every symptom that they are having,' said study author Tina Bhutani, MD, dermatologist with the University of California, San Francisco, and in private practice. 'But what we can quickly ask is if they are having trouble sleeping, or if they wake up multiple times during the night or whether they feel rested in the morning. That way we can provide them with resources where they can get more support.' 'Childhood verbal abuse can have similar impact as physical abuse'
Verbal abuse of children could be as damaging to their mental health in adulthood as physical abuse, according to researchers in Britain. A study of more than 20,000 adults in England and Wales found that people exposed to verbal abuse in childhood were likely to feel disconnected, pessimistic, and emotionally unwell in later life. Adults who were physically abused as children had a 52% higher chance of experiencing low mental wellbeing, and this stood at around 64% for those who had been subjected to solely verbal abuse. While verbal abuse did show as having a marginally higher impact in this study, the researchers said the difference was not statistically significant and that further studies would be needed perhaps with a larger sample size to confirm the validity of the difference. Being exposed to both types of abuse compounded the risk even further, at 115% higher, the study led by Liverpool John Moores University found. Lead author, Professor Mark Bellis, who is director of research and innovation at the university, said: 'Our research shows that verbal abuse in childhood may inflict mental health scars as deep and enduring as those caused by physical abuse. Important progress has been made in reducing physical abuse, but verbal abuse is often overlooked.' The study, published in the BMJ Open, also suggested the prevalence of verbal abuse has risen in recent decades 'eroding the long-term mental health benefits we should see from reducing physical abuse'. The authors worked alongside Bangor University and Public Health Wales to pool data from seven relevant studies, involving 20,687 adults from England and Wales and looking at birth cohorts from the 1950s onwards. They found that the prevalence of child physical abuse halved from around 20% among those born between 1950 and 1979 to 10% among those born in 2000 or later. But when it came to verbal abuse, the prevalence rose from 12% among those born before 1950 to around 20% among those born in 2000 or later. The researchers said an estimated one in six children endure physical abuse, primarily from family members and caregivers, but one in three are subjected to verbal abuse. Jessica Bondy, founder of Words Matter, an organisation focused on ending childhood verbal abuse by adults said: 'This study confirms what survivors and professionals have long known: words can wound deeply and have a lasting impact on a child's mental health and development. We all get overloaded sometimes, but too many adults are turning to harsh words without realising the lasting damage they cause to children. 'Any gains made in reducing physical abuse risk being undone by rising rates of verbal abuse. We must act now to confront the lasting harm caused by cruel, critical or controlling language. We need to build children up – not knock them down. The mental health of the next generation and our shared future depend on it.'
