Toll rate hike a blow to daily commuters, says Cong
He said as per the new rates, the toll for cars at the Electronics City Flyover has increased from ₹60 to ₹65 (8.33% hike), while at the Attibele toll plaza, the rate has gone from ₹35 to ₹40 (14.29% increase).
Additionally, the monthly pass for cars at Electronics City has been raised from ₹1,795 to ₹1,885, and at Attibele, from ₹1,080 to ₹1,130 — a steep hike of ₹90 and ₹50 respectively, the Congress leader said.
He pointed out that BELT (Bangalore Elevated Tollway Limited), a private company operating under a concession agreement with NHAI, has once again hiked toll rates on Bengaluru's elevated expressway, proving that in Karnataka, even public roads are at the mercy of private profit.
'While the BJP-led Centre watches silently, the burden keeps falling on the backs of ordinary commuters. This is not infrastructure development, it's organised, authorised extortion,' he alleged.
He accused the Modi-led Central government of favouring private toll operators at the cost of ordinary citizens and demanded an immediate rollback. He also urged immediate rollback of the ₹50 LPG cylinder hike and ₹2/litre fuel excise hike.
'If Karnataka's BJP-JD(S) MPs and MLAs can't raise their voice against Delhi's loot, they should raise their hands and resign,' Mr Surjewala said.

Oppn delegation raises concerns over voter list revision, meets EC
New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) A joint delegation comprising 11 political parties of the Opposition met with the Election Commission on Wednesday to voice strong objections over the recently announced Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Addressing the media after the meeting, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, a delegation, comprising around 20 representatives, engaged in a detailed discussion with the Commission that lasted nearly three hours. However, Singhvi said that only two members from each party were allowed to attend the meeting, preventing many leaders from participating. The parties have formally lodged a complaint regarding this restriction. 'Since 2003, Bihar has witnessed at least five major elections over the past 22 years. If the current voter list process is being questioned, does that mean all previous elections were flawed?' he asked. 'Even if a revision was necessary, it could have been done after the elections, with proper preparation. When a similar process was conducted in 2003, the general elections were still a year away and the assembly polls two years later. This time, the time frame is extremely limited,' the Congress leader added. He also raised concerns over the new documentation requirements for voter eligibility. For the past decade, Aadhaar has been accepted as a valid proof for most government processes, but now the Commission is reportedly requiring a birth certificate. In certain categories, those born between 1987 and 2012 may even have to produce the birth certificates of their parents, he said. 'This is an impractical and unfair demand. Millions of poor citizens, especially in rural areas, will be forced to spend months collecting documents. Many legitimate voters could be excluded from the rolls altogether. This is a clear violation of the level playing field, which is fundamental to free and fair elections,' he said. The delegation also questioned the legal process behind the sudden change. He said, "Because until January, there was no such rule. You did not announce it; instead, you published an SSR (Summary Special Revision). In January 2025, there was no announcement of an SIR, nor was the term even mentioned. So how was this decision suddenly made at the end of June?" Citing various Supreme Court judgments, the delegation argued that excluding eligible citizens from the electoral roll amounts to severe disenfranchisement and violates constitutional rights. 'We reminded the Commission that the Supreme Court has repeatedly held that denying someone the right to vote through exclusion from the electoral roll is a grave injustice,' Singhvi said. Rashbehari-to-college campus rally takes up entire road flank
Kolkata: Hundreds of BJP supporters on Wednesday afternoon marched down a 3-km route from Rashbehari crossing to the law college where a first-year student was gang-raped a week ago. The rally took place after the organisers — Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of BJP – obtained permission from the Calcutta High Court to protest against the sexual assault. Considering the commuters' woes, the HC had asked the police to ensure that the breadth of rallies must be restricted to a third of the road. However, one flank of the Rashbehari connector was shut completely on Wednesday, which paralysed traffic movement on the stretch for close to two hour. BJYM state president Indranil Khan told TOI: "Despite the HC's green signal, cops were not allowing our party workers to put up a stage on the opposite flank of the college. After talking to the police, we decided that our rally would pass on one flank of the road while the other flank would remain open for traffic movement."
