Locals protest ‘unscientific' tree translocation

1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: In a bid to draw attention to the ongoing tree translocation process in Ambari, linked to the upcoming flyover from Noonmati to Dighalipukhuri, hundreds of citizens formed a human chain on Saturday, denouncing the process as unscientific and a breach of public trust. At the protest site, residents from diverse backgrounds held placards advocating for tree preservation and warning of environmental consequences. To make their demonstration culturally resonant, some participants sang songs by the legendary Bhupen Hazarika. Santanu Borthakur, a Gauhati high court advocate and local resident, recalled the PIL filed in Nov last year. He said the govt had assured the court under oath that the trees would not be harmed but believes that it has now reneged on its promise. "It is truly shocking that the govt has gone back on its word. I have repeatedly stressed that local residents must be consulted before undertaking such projects, as their input is just as important as that of experts," Borthakur said. Another resident, Khanindra Talukdar, voiced concerns over the ecological impact. "What we are doing today is for the benefit of future generations. If these trees are removed, what kind of environment will they inherit? We are not against development, but it should not come at the cost of sacrificing these trees," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The century-old trees that once lined Gopinath Bordoloi Road were mostly relocated during night hours to the backyard of the Ambari Textile Institute to facilitate construction. Now, only a few stripped mature trunks remain, their branches and leaves chopped in preparation for translocation. Officials from the PWD explained that in a week's time, four to five trees can be translocated, while smaller trees can be relocated quickly, mature ones take longer. "The process begins with trimming and preparing the root ball before shifting the trees. We are working with a consultant from Delhi, who has been overseeing their care. Some translocated trees have already started sprouting new leaves," said Lakhyajyoti Borah, a PWD engineer. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Pilots, experts grapple with Guj crash videos

1 2 3 Kolkata: Veteran pilots, who told TOI about the possibility of inadvertently switching off the second live engine in the Air India Dreamliner in the event of the stalling of the first engine during take-off, have identified another error that might have occurred in the cockpit during the critical take-off phase: the retraction of flaps that assist lift instead of the landing gear that causes drag. "After take-off, when instruments show positive climb rate, the monitoring pilot announces 'positive rate'. The flying pilot verifies and commands 'gear up' to retract landing gear. This sequence occurs seconds after lift-off, approximately 100 ft above ground, to reduce drag and enhance lift. The pilot might have mistakenly retracted the flaps, crucial for lift, instead of the gear," a seasoned pilot explained. The impact of such an error, if it occurred, will be confirmed only after experts analyse the Digital Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder. Video evidence of the 31-second flight shows the landing gear remaining deployed even as the aircraft exceeded 600 ft before descending and crashing on a populated area. But the footage quality prevents confirmation of flap positions. "Retracting flaps, while the landing gear remains down, reduce lift. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? The deployed landing gear at crash time suggests either pilot distraction during an emergency or an error," the pilot said. He noted that Ahmedabad's high temperature (around 40°C) created thin air, hampering lift and engine performance, reducing thrust during take-off and ascent. Though such errors should not occur with experienced crew members, like AI 171's (Capt Sumeet Sabharwal: 8,200 hours, First Officer Clive Kunder: 1,100 hours), a source pointed at the co-pilot's previous experience on Airbus A320 before Boeing Dreamliner training. "Different manufacturers have distinct cockpit configurations. Pilots should ideally progress within the same manufacturer's aircraft family. The co-pilot should have advanced to an A330, but pilot shortages may have prevented this," the source explained. Another pilot suggested an incident during the final take-off might have distracted the crew, leading to errors with insufficient reaction time. But an experienced aviator differed with the suggestion, pointing out that the Boeing Dreamliner's sophisticated flight control system incorporates multiple safety mechanisms. These include prevention of stalling through pitch-up restrictions, speed control via elevator and auto-throttle adjustments, automatic trimming for stability and safeguards against extreme banking angles and G-force loads. Pilots agree that regardless of mechanical or human factors, the event occurred when corrective action time was minimal. Additional altitude would have provided more response time, but the available 20 seconds proved insufficient. NBT Conclave: Minister Swatantra Dev red flags water scarcity in UP, calls for conservation measures

1 2 Lucknow: Jal shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh has raised an alarm over Uttar Pradesh's critical water situation, revealing that the state has sufficient water security for only three months annually. "Declining groundwater levels, shrinking water bodies and increasing dependence on over-extraction are pushing the state towards a serious water crisis. Even major rivers like the Rapti and Ganga, once considered perennial sources, are no longer dependable throughout the year," he said while speaking at 'Bhujal Suraksha, Bhavishya ki Raksha', organised jointly by Navbharat Times and UP groundwater department on Friday. Singh said while rivers like Chambal bring up to 20 lakh cusecs of water the Rapti barely carries 3,400 cusecs now. "In districts like Varanasi, we sometimes struggle to supply drinking water from the Ganga during the dry season," he added. He also pointed out the increasing risks from climate misalignments—when floods from Ganga and Ghaghara coincide, they create dangerous flood patterns; if they arrive out of sync, parts of the state face drought. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "The delicate balance is now being disturbed by human actions and lack of planning," Singh said. The minister lamented that thousands of ponds and lakes, once the backbone of rural water conservation, have either been encroached upon or turned into drains. "Earlier, every village had a pond where animals and people bathed. Today, many of those ponds have been filled up or polluted beyond use," he said, urging the revival of these water bodies. He stressed the need to reduce everyday water wastage, especially of bottled water in weddings and public events. "If every person saves even a single bottle daily, the collective impact would be huge," he said, encouraging the use of refillable water bottles during travel. The govt, Singh said, is actively working on water budgeting and security plans and has launched projects in nearly 70% of the state's development blocks. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, groundwater is being tapped for household supply, but he warned this will not be sustainable without proper recharge and conservation. Technologies like drip irrigation, remote sensing and rainwater harvesting are being promoted, Singh said adding that public participation was the key. "Just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the Swachh Bharat Mission by setting an example, water conservation must also become a public movement," he said. Calling water, the foundation of life and civilisation, Singh said its protection is a scientific, ethical and social responsibility. "We need every citizen—farmers, students, teachers, engineers—to become water warriors," Singh said. He concluded by expressing confidence that under PM Narendra Modi's leadership, India would not become a victim of a global water crisis but emerge as a leader in sustainable water management.
