The advent calendar by NielsenIQ (NIQ), the world's leading consumer intelligence company, will run for the next 30 days of Ramadan. It aims to help businesses understand evolving shopper habits, sales drivers, and shifts in online and offline behaviors throughout the month. An initiative by NielsenIQ shares daily insights into consumer behavior in the UAE, KSA, and multiple other countries Türkiye, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco.
Here are some key takeaways about the Ramadan Advent Calendar 2025: Ramadan is a significant period for businesses in the Middle East and Africa, with a notable impact on consumer spending and e-commerce growth.
Ramadan contributes nearly 19% of the annual sales for Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). This surge is driven by increased demand for food and beverage products during the holy month.
Ramadan also significantly boosts sales in the technology and durable goods sectors, accounting for 13-16% of annual sales. This indicates a rise in consumer spending on electronics and home appliances during this period.
Many shoppers are now more comfortable with e-commerce, especially during Ramadan, when time and convenience become key factors. The 7.4% overall increase in online sales across the Middle East and Africa reflects this shift.
Saudi Arabia stands out with a remarkable 38% increase in online sales.
Here is a further breakdown for FMCG & T&D sector for Ramadan 2024:
Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) NIQ observed a Value Growth of 26.5%, which means that overall spending during Ramadan 2024 increased substantially compared to the previous year
There was also a Unit Sales Growth of 5.4%, which indicates that the volume of products sold also grew, though slower than the increase in value
Food categories clearly dominated during Ramadan, reflecting consumer priorities and behavior during this period. Food categories contributed 81.6% of the sales, whereas non-food categories contributed 18.4%
Over 500 new food and Non-Food SKUs were launched between Ramadan'24 and Ramadan'23 in each country
Tech & Durables (T&D) While home climate control products saw a high growth due to the climate and extended time spent at home, consumer electronics experienced a dip as consumers focus more on essential purchases and wait for post-Ramadan sales events
Across MENA countries, Ramadan period sales contributed about 13-16% of total sales
There was a +7.4% increase in online sales across the MENA region, demonstrating a growing acceptance and adoption of e-commerce
The exceptional +38% growth in Saudi Arabia underscores the country's rapid e-commerce expansion
During Ramadan 2024 vs 2023, Telecom and IT sectors showed strong growth in the UAE
Electrical Heating, Air treatment, Mobile computing, software, AR/VR glasses, and media tablets were the top grossing products across UAE and KSA.

With over half of surveyed consumers indicating increases in their insurance premiums—and more than 80% expecting further hikes—many are adjusting their financial plans accordingly. Auto insurance, in particular, has seen a significant rise, prompting consumers to seek smarter and more sustainable financial solutions. Emerging markets such as the Middle East are leading to global growth. Top 2025 Tech Trends: Strong economic sentiment in specific countries within the Middle East & Africa (MEA) in 2025 will continue to drive the region's overall demand for consumer technology. In 2025, brands selling into the Middle East & Africa must navigate fragmented consumer profiles and a crowded retail landscape. Success will depend on clear brand differentiation and tailored product ranges that balance price and functionality across diverse markets. Staying informed on global consumer trends is also essential, as MEA consumers rapidly close the gap in trend adoption. The 2025 forecast for regional sales of total Consumer Tech & Durables in MEA is USD 68B with 2% growth rate. The Revenue share of phones equipped with an AI processor, by region in MEA, is 32% of total sales In smartphones, foldables are a small segment, but volume demand is growing fast within Egypt and Saudi Arabia. 'Manufacturers and retailers should focus on creating solutions that address real-world challenges and elevate the consumer experience. 'By doing so, they can build stronger connections with consumers who are increasingly seeking products that align with their values and enhance their daily lives.' On another note, we know that the tech demand is increasing across generations, but it is much more vocal in Gen Z (source: Consumer Outlook report 2024). To understand the differences between Gen Z (age 18-27) and Gen X (age 44-59), let's review a few numbers: 48% of Gen Z regularly uses a wearable device that autonomously tracks and learns their behavior. This number is only 31% for Gen X. In another point, 46% of Gen Z leverages AI in their mobile devices to automate and speed up their everyday decisions whereas it is only 34% for Gen X. As we see significant adoption of new technologies for younger generation, the demand and early adoption of any new technology or trend will be driven by Gen Z. Egypt's Foreign Minister stresses peace, security, economic ties at EU-AU Meeting

Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of peace, security, and economic ties at the European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, 21 May. He affirmed Egypt's commitment to bolstering the strategic partnership between the two blocs and held separate bilateral meetings on the sidelines with his Rwandan counterpart and the Secretary-General of COMESA. During the EU-AU Meeting's plenary session on 'Peace, Security, and Governance,' Minister Abdelatty delivered Egypt's statement. He highlighted that the gathering occurred amidst unprecedented regional and international challenges, underscoring that these circumstances necessitate a deeper EU-AU partnership to end conflicts, combat terrorism, address forced migration, and protect maritime security. Abdelatty welcomed the EU's consistent support for African frameworks confronting continental threats. The Minister reiterated Egypt's belief in a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace by strengthening the nation-state and its institutions. He emphasised that building state capacities requires joint efforts to achieve lasting peace and called for supporting AU and African regional economic communities in early warning, conflict prevention, and mediation. In this context, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's role as the AU Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD). He detailed Egypt's collaboration with the AU Commission on updating PCRD policies, including the launch of the Cairo-based AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUCPCRD), and urged EU support for the AU Commission in this area. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister underscored the importance of supporting Somalia's pursuit of stability and prosperity. He stressed the critical need to fund the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to achieve its objectives, adding that a successful African-European partnership in Somalia would model future cooperation. On the sidelines, Abdelatty met Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in energy, infrastructure, logistics, trade, investment, health, agriculture, and security. He welcomed the finalised land allocation for two logistic zones, one in each country, to enhance Egyptian companies' access to the Rwandan market, and noted progress on the Egypt-Rwanda/Magdi Yacoub Heart Centre. Also on Wednesday, Abdelatty met Chileshe Kapwepwe, Secretary-General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He praised Kapwepwe's efforts during Egypt's recent COMESA chairmanship for deepening economic integration. Abdelatty highlighted aspirations for cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and infrastructure to facilitate trade. He stressed Egypt's readiness to share expertise in specialised economic zones, the green economy, and solar energy, emphasising COMESA members' role in supporting the Secretariat to maximise economic integration benefits for overcoming regional economic challenges.
