Egypt's Foreign Minister stresses peace, security, economic ties at EU-AU Meeting
Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stressed the importance of peace, security, and economic ties at the European Union-African Union (EU-AU) Ministerial Meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, 21 May. He affirmed Egypt's commitment to bolstering the strategic partnership between the two blocs and held separate bilateral meetings on the sidelines with his Rwandan counterpart and the Secretary-General of COMESA.
During the EU-AU Meeting's plenary session on 'Peace, Security, and Governance,' Minister Abdelatty delivered Egypt's statement. He highlighted that the gathering occurred amidst unprecedented regional and international challenges, underscoring that these circumstances necessitate a deeper EU-AU partnership to end conflicts, combat terrorism, address forced migration, and protect maritime security. Abdelatty welcomed the EU's consistent support for African frameworks confronting continental threats.
The Minister reiterated Egypt's belief in a comprehensive approach to sustainable peace by strengthening the nation-state and its institutions. He emphasised that building state capacities requires joint efforts to achieve lasting peace and called for supporting AU and African regional economic communities in early warning, conflict prevention, and mediation.
In this context, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's role as the AU Champion for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD). He detailed Egypt's collaboration with the AU Commission on updating PCRD policies, including the launch of the Cairo-based AU Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUCPCRD), and urged EU support for the AU Commission in this area.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister underscored the importance of supporting Somalia's pursuit of stability and prosperity. He stressed the critical need to fund the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to achieve its objectives, adding that a successful African-European partnership in Somalia would model future cooperation.
On the sidelines, Abdelatty met Olivier Nduhungirehe, Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Minister Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting cooperation in energy, infrastructure, logistics, trade, investment, health, agriculture, and security. He welcomed the finalised land allocation for two logistic zones, one in each country, to enhance Egyptian companies' access to the Rwandan market, and noted progress on the Egypt-Rwanda/Magdi Yacoub Heart Centre.
Also on Wednesday, Abdelatty met Chileshe Kapwepwe, Secretary-General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He praised Kapwepwe's efforts during Egypt's recent COMESA chairmanship for deepening economic integration. Abdelatty highlighted aspirations for cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and infrastructure to facilitate trade. He stressed Egypt's readiness to share expertise in specialised economic zones, the green economy, and solar energy, emphasising COMESA members' role in supporting the Secretariat to maximise economic integration benefits for overcoming regional economic challenges.

Egypt looks forward to establishing American industrial zone in Suez Canal: Sisi
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Monday received a delegation of US businessmen participating in the Egyptian-US Economic Forum held in Cairo. The President expressed Egypt's readiness to cooperate with the US business community and investors in all economic fields of mutual interest, in light of US President Trump's support towards enhancing cooperation between Egyptian and American companies. Sisi affirmed that Egypt looks forward to establishing a US industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and emphasized that the country is ready to provide all the necessary facilities to American investors. The delegation was headed by CEO and President of the US Chamber of Commerce Suzanne Clark, and the Chairman of the US-Egypt Business Council and CEO of Apache Corporation John Christmann. The Spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, Mohamed al-Shennawy, said the President first met with Clark and Christmann before being joined by the members of the delegation. President Sisi noted that investing in Egypt is a promising opportunity for any investor, as it enjoys both political and societal stability based on the awareness of citizens and their resilience in enduring the major and harsh economic reforms that were implemented to achieve public interest, especially in light of regional disturbances. Egypt is looking forward to becoming a major industrial hub for American industries, and seeks to also serve as a large market and gateway to the Arab region and the African continent, owing to the strong ties Egypt shares with the continent's countries. Fruitful US cooperation Clark noted that the delegation's visit to Egypt confirms the strength and solidity of the strategic alliance between Egypt and the USA. She explained that American companies operating in Egypt have achieved significant successes and contributed to the development process in Egypt, and are considered a model to be emulated in the success of cooperation between the two countries, similar to the Apache Corporation. This was highly valued by President Sisi, who expressed his appreciation for the success of Apache's business in Egypt and the expansion of its scope of work. CAIRO, June 4 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said continued Israeli military operations will lead to more bloodshed and further worsen the catastrophic humanitarian crisis the Palestinian people are going through. During a phone call with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong Wednesday, the foreign minister asserted Egypt's keenness on pressing ahead with advancing ties between the two countries and elevating them to broader horizons. Abdelatty congratulated his Australian counterpart on her second term in office following the recent federal parliamentary elections in Australia. The foreign minister also underlined the positive momentum of the visit of the Governor-General of Australia to Egypt in April 2025. This year marks the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries, Abdelatty said. He also said he is looking forward to holding the next round of political consultations between Egypt and Australia, and beefing up investments and trade exchange between the two countries. Meantime, the foreign minister highlighted massive incentives offered by the Egyptian market, along with Egypt's great interest in luring investments in a number of priority sectors, topped by the field of green hydrogen. Abdelatty also reviewed the latest developments in the region, including the war in Gaza, underlining Egypt's mediation efforts in cooperation with the US and Qatar on this score. The only path to achieving sustainable peace is sticking to the two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state, based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as its capital, he concluded.
