The Inflictor bounces back to win Tatt's Mile at Eagle Farm
'He's the dude'.
Those were the crowning three words from hobby trainer Craig Cousins after cult gelding The Inflictor bounced back from a disappointing Stradbroke Handicap to win the $160,000 Listed Tattersall's Mile at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The Inflictor jumped as the $3.50 favourite and the result never looked in doubt when the four-year-old hit the lead from about the 300m mark to collect his first stakes victory.
'I've always said the horse is easy to train and there's a lot of people who have helped me,' a delighted Cousins said.

It would've been a bittersweet moment for jockey Cejay Graham, who was set to ride The Inflictor in the Tatt's Mile if not for a two-week suspension she is now halfway through serving.
Graham also missed out on riding winning mare Miss Joelene, trained by Kelly Schweida, in the earlier Tatt's Gold Crown (2100m).
Graham's close mate Rachel King was the lucky recipient of the vacant ride and she made her opportunity count with a flawless performance, finishing ahead of Sibaaq ($4.70) and Chica Mojito ($11).
'I feel for Cejay, she's one of my best friends in the (jockeys') room so I'm gutted she wasn't riding the horse today,' King said.
'She's done all the work on him and she told me everything I needed to know, so a big shout out to her.
'She's a superstar and I'm sure she'll be back on him again very soon.'

Truck driver Cousins said the victory on Saturday was some consolation for him and connections after The Inflictor finished 11th in this month's $3m Stradbroke Handicap at the same track.
'Yeah it does make up for it,' said the trainer, who only has three to four horses in work.
'The Stradbroke was a tough race. It was his first go in a Group 1 and he didn't get any favours.
'That's just racing and today's proven that he is a Listed horse and it's my biggest win ever as far as race status goes so it's great.
'I'll give him three weeks off now and we'll head down to Sydney.
'I haven't even picked out a race but we'll see what suits him. He could go down for a Benchmark 100 down there.'
Cousins paid tribute to The Inflictor's band of owners, including the syndicate Bond 007, which is essentially a group of mates who used to play together at Moreton Bay AFL club.
'They're a mob of larrikin blokes like myself and they just love it,' the 60-year-old trainer said.
'They're all happy, it's great. It's a big day in my training life for sure.'
King said The Inflictor had been 'beaten up a little bit' in the Stradbroke but being drawn out wide on Saturday was a blessing in disguise because it allowed him more room to strut his stuff.
'He probably doesn't want any further than the mile, but credit to the team for getting him ready after that run in the Stradbroke,' she said.
'He got his confidence back and it's great to get a winner for Craig.'

Relaxed Metalart too slick in Healy Stakes
Eagle Farm trainer Kelly Schweida reckons his WJ Healy Stakes winner Metalart is so relaxed that you could tie him to a fence post and a week later he'd still be chilling out.
But the four-year-old gelding had enough zip on Saturday at Eagle Farm to beat Austmarr ($8) and General Salute ($4.40) in the $200,000 Group 3 race over 1200m, handing Schweida a winning double for the day following Miss Joelene's success in the earlier Tatt's Gold Crown (2100m).
'You could tie him up to a fence post, come back a week later and he'd be fine,' Schweida said.
'He's a lovely horse. I don't know where his ceiling is, he just keeps winning. It's quite incredible really.
'He's a very unassuming horse, but he got a gun ride (from Jason Collett) today.
'He goes to sleep in the tie-ups, he's so quiet and lovely and he doesn't look like a racehorse, but he's a pretty good one.
'He probably should have won a stakes race by now.
'He almost came from behind the other day (in the 1000m Listed Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm won by Vodka Martini).
'We got the saloon passage from the good gate today.'

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd is the regular rider for Metalart but fractured his hand during trackwork at Eagle Farm last week, handing Collett a golden opportunity.
Collett will be enjoying his holidays on the Sunshine Coast in two weeks but he made sure he finished Tatt's Tiara day with a bang.
'He's got such a great attitude,' Collett said about four-year-old gelding Metalart, who has now won eight of his 14 races.
'Once he got going the run was easy, and he was strong late.
'I remember seeing him over the Christmas period when Michael Rodd won on him (in a Benchmark 78), and he looked impressive that day.
'I'd say 1400m is probably his best trip, so it was a good sign that he was able to win over 1200m today.'
Hidden Wealth jumped at $6.50 but could only manage fourth on a disappointing day for the Tony Gollan stable after star mare Floozie finished fifth in the $700,000 Group 1 Tatt's Tiara.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir wants the AFL to intervene ahead of SCG clash unhappy with the surface
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir has real concern over the playing surface at the SCG, saying it was unsafe to play on ahead of his team's clash there in round 17. Longmuir was in the stands in Sydney on Friday night when the Western Bulldogs beat the Swans. He didn't like what he saw. Visibly, up to a third of the turf on the SCG looked below AFL standard and players continued to lose their feet. At one stage, the Bulldogs Bailey Williams got caught in the turf and there were fears he'd injured his knee. He left the ground, but returned. But the risk of serious injury seemed real. There is plenty of rain heading Sydney's way during this week as well. Longmuir joined the chorus of football people slamming the surface. 'I watched the game on Friday night, and we'll be led by the AFL, but the moment my brain goes to, 'that's unsafe for players', I have a concern,' he said. 'And I went there on Friday night. I thought at times it was unsafe to play on. 'I think the Bailey Williams one, we just can't put players out there and risk their safety if the ground's not right. 'And I thought it was a bit unsafe the other night, especially down the left hand side. 'I don't make those decisions. Fully understand that both teams are playing on the same surface. 'So if the AFL deem it safe to play, we'll play, and I won't speak another moment of it. But thought it was unsafe the other night.' Longmuir said the AFL approached the Dockers to look at the ground, but as yet there had been no discussions about changing venues. He said he expected Fremantle and the AFL to go back and forth during the week ahead of Sunday's clash. Longmuir will also keep an eye on dual Brownlow medallist, Nat Fyfe, during the week. Despite a close game against St Kilda, which the Dockers won by 12 points, the Dockers did not activate their sub, Fyfe. With the Saints dominating clearances, he would have been handy. "There's been some challenges with the surface..." 😬 Dean Cox was asked post-game on the SCG's turf in tonight's #AFLSwansDogs clash. MORE ðŸ'‰ — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) June 27, 2025 But Longmuir said Fyfe told the coaching staff during the third term that his calf didn't feel right. So they opted to leave him on the pine. 'Yeah, it came up to the box early in the third quarter that he had some calf awareness,' Longmuir said. 'He tried to warm up at half-time and he did some run-throughs and then he felt some awareness in his calf. 'So not sure whether we could have put him on if we had an injury, but since we didn't have an injury and didn't have any players really flagging, the safe option was to just leave him out of the game. 'It's a bit of a concern, of course. But we'll see how he pulls up tomorrow, get it scanned if we need to, and see where it takes us. 'But from what I understand, it's pretty minor and we didn't have to bring him on.'

Matildas' Alanna Kennedy keen on midfield role after 1-1 draw with Slovenia
Matildas veteran Alanna Kennedy says she would welcome further opportunities to play in the midfield role she filled during Australia's 1-1 draw with Slovenia on Sunday night. Coach Joe Montemurro started Kennedy alongside Kyra Cooney-Cross in the middle of the park in his second match in charge in Perth, screening centre-backs Clare Hunt and Winonah Heatley. Montemurro made six changes to the side that secured a 3-0 win over the Slovenians on Thursday. Though unable to match the earlier result, the Matildas put in an improved performance with the ball. Kennedy was substituted before Mirjam Kastelec's late strike cancelled out Michelle Heyman's 50th-minute opener. "I love playing in the midfield, I was really excited to have the opportunity to play there," Kennedy told Paramount Plus. "Hopefully, the first of many and I think it was a good start." Kennedy was a midfielder as a junior and has been deployed there at a club level since making a move from Manchester City to NWSL side Angel City in January. "I'm happy to play for Australia in any position, even if it means in goal," Kennedy said. "But I'm not going to complain about playing in the midfield. "I love being a defender, but I think for me, like my heart's a bit higher up the pitch and I'm happy to have the opportunity to play there." Being able to use Kennedy in the midfield would give Montemurro another option heading into next year's Asian Cup, which will be staged in Australia. "When you've got a player like Alanna who protects the back two, the fullbacks can come inside and have more freedom," Montemurro said. "The wingers have more freedom to come inside into midfield and create overloads. "When you've got that stability of one player, you can create the overloads." Kennedy is one of eight players set to depart the Matildas set-up following the fixtures against Slovenia. Another eight are jetting to Western Australia for friendlies against Panama on July 5 and 8. AAP

Molly Picklum dominated the VIVO Rio Pro final in Brazil to win her first title for 2025
Australia's new world No.1 Molly Picklum has solidified her position at the top and put her world championship rivals on notice with a dominant display in Brazil to take her first title for 2025. Picklum was the only woman ranked in the top five to make it past the elimination rounds at the VIVO Rio Pro and showed her class taking down local hope Luana Silva as the 22-year-old Australian begins to peak at the right end of the season. It was Picklum's third Championship Tour win and she's become the pacesetter with just two events remaining before the final one-day shootout for the world title. 'I've worked so hard this year to really put my best foot forward,' Picklum said. 'Actually, before I was going out I felt nearly emotional because I was just like, okay, I get another chance to try and get a victory. I've dreamt so much of winning here in Rio, too. I'm a real energetic person, I love the Brazilian energy, and to get a win this year means so much for sure. Thank you so much and shout out to everyone back at home. I know you're all probably up watching and I felt all the love. 'I actually ran in and started calling my family straight away because I wanted to share it with the people I love and the people that have supported me through the entire time, big love to you guys.' Picklum has finished in the top three in six of nine events this season and has a 5000 point lead over world No.2 Gabriela Bryan in the rankings.
