José Ramírez reaches milestone, then scores winning run in Guardians' 4-3 10-inning win over Twins

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jose Ramirez became the first player in Cleveland franchise history to reach 250 career homers and 250 steals and then scored the winning run in the 10th inning as the Guardians rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.
Ramírez's single drove in Steven Kwan to tie it at 3. Ramírez then stole second base to become the 24th player in major league history — and only active one — to reach the milestone.
After Kyle Manzardo was intentionally walked, pinch-hitter Angel Martinez hit a sharp grounder into right field to score Ramírez and give Cleveland its second walk-off win of the four-game series.
The Guardians took three games in the four-game set and went 6-4 on their 10-game homestand. There were two rain delays totaling 2 hours, 23 minutes on what was ironically Weather Education Day.
An 18-minute rain delay between the sixth and seventh innings ended up benefiting the Twins. Minnesota scored a pair of runs in the seventh and took advantage of Cleveland's fielders struggling with damp conditions.
Harrison Bader led off the inning with an infield single after Cleveland third baseman Will Wilson slipped while fielding the grounder. Bader scored on an RBI single by Christian Vazquez after Noel slipped in right center. Key moment
Cleveland had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but was unable to convert when Jhoan Duran struck out Bo Naylor and Kwan. Key stat
Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel hit a 450-foot home run in the fifth inning. The solo shot to left-center off Simeon Woods Richardson tied his longest homer at Progressive Field and marked the 12th time since MLB Statcast started in 2015 that a Cleveland batter had gone at least 450 feet deep at home. Up next
Twins: Head to Boston for a weekend series. RHP Joe Ryan (2-2, 3.18 ERA) gets the call for Friday's opener.
Guardians: Begin a six-game road trip in Toronto on Friday. LHP Logan Allen (1-2, 4.21 ERA) looks to bounce back after allowing seven runs on Sunday against Boston.

Polanco's RBI single in 9th inning secures Mariners' 4-3 win over Guardians

SEATTLE (AP) — Jorge Polanco hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Saturday night. With one out and the bases loaded, Polanco smacked a single up the middle off Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase (4-1), who blew a save opportunity earlier in the frame when he threw a wild pitch that allowed Dylan Moore to score and tie the game at 3-all. The Mariners jumped to an early lead by plating a pair of runs in the second off Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee. Cal Raleigh hit an RBI double to left and Polanco added a sacrifice fly. Bibee gave up two runs and four hits in five innings. But the Guardians scored the game's next three runs, including a solo home run by José Ramírez in the fifth, which increased his career-long on-base streak to 39 games, the longest active on-base streak in the majors. Those offensive contributions weren't enough to keep the Mariners from coming back, though, and Jackson Kowar (1-0) from earning his first victory of the season with a perfect ninth. Key moment Dominic Canzone led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, and pinch runner Dylan Moore stole second base. Moore advanced to third on a textbook sacrifice bunt by Cole Young, then Moore scored with ease on Clase's wild pitch. Key stat Seattle starter George Kirby's streak of 68 consecutive starts walking two or few batters was snapped on Saturday with three walks. It is the third-longest streak in major league history, trailing only right-handers Carlos Silva and Cy Young. Up next RHP Emerson Hancock (2-2, 5.04 ERA) will start for the Mariners on Sunday. RHP Luis Ortiz (3-7, 4.26) will start for the Guardians in the final game of the three-game set. ___ AP MLB:

Jhoan Duran gives up walkoff run to give Astros a thrilling 3-2 win over Twins

Rookie Cam Smith hit a tiebreaking RBI single off closer Jhoan Duran with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Houston Astros a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Duran (4-2) walked Christian Walker with one out in the ninth and he moved to third on a two-out single by Jake Meyers. Smith then singled on a grounder to center to score Meyers for his first career walkoff hit and Houston's fourth straight victory. Closer Josh Hader (3-0) struck out two in a scoreless ninth for the win. Both teams got strong performances from their starters. Houston's Hunter Brown allowed three hits and two runs with a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings. Minnesota's Joe Ryan yielded two hits and two runs while fanning seven in seven innings. Yainer Diaz hit a two-run homer for Houston in the third and Brooks Lee tied it with his shot in the fifth that extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. Bryan Abreu struck out three in a scoreless eighth for the Astros. Brown plunked Byron Buxton on the left elbow to start the sixth before walking Trevor Larnach. But he retired the next three batters, with two strikeouts to escape the jam. Buxton remained in the game for the bottom of the inning but was replaced in center field by Harrison Bader in the bottom of the seventh. The team said he had left because of a bruised left elbow. Smith's single to win it. Brown has a 1.88 ERA, which ranks second in the American League. Minnesota RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (2-3, 5.74 ERA) opposes LHP Brandon Walter (0-0, 1.64) when the series concludes Sunday.

Bill Belichick, North Carolina land surprise in-state 4-star twins

The post Bill Belichick, North Carolina land surprise in-state 4-star twins appeared first on ClutchPoints. North Carolina football and Bill Belichick ignited their June in a massive way. The Tar Heels secured a surprise college football recruiting win Thursday. In the form of a pair of four-star twin brothers. Advertisement UNC landed Zavion and Jayden Griffin-Hayes as its newest verbal commits, Hayes Fawcett of On3 confirmed Thursday afternoon. Both siblings told Fawcett 'The best play for the best,' likely referencing the eight-time Super Bowl winning head coach. But the Griffin-Hayes twins secure a huge recruiting coup for UNC for this reason. North Carolina and Belichick previously lost out on landing another set of twins back in April: Aidan and Andrew Harris, who are also in-state four-stars. Both Matthews, North Carolina natives left out UNC on their short list of school options. The Griffin-Hayes brothers make up for the Harris recruiting loss. Advertisement Zavion Griffin-Hayes is a towering 6-foot-6, 235-pound rusher. Former UNC defensive coordinator Geoff Collins originally courted him to Chapel Hill. Belichick and son Steve, however, continued to make him a priority. Zavion landed nearly 45 scholarship offers including from in-state rivals North Carolina State and Duke. Atlantic Coast Conference heavyweight Miami and College Football Playoff qualifier Georgia also pursued him. Jayden Griffin-Hayes is a leaner option at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. He's also a three-star per 247Sports composite. However, he's bringing cat-quick rushing angles and versatility to the 'Heels. The ACC program have steadily created new recruiting momentum as Belichick soon coaches his first UNC team. North Carolina landed 6-foot-5 quarterback Travis Burgess on May 21.
