Ruben Selles admits Sheffield United fans may already be running out of patience
Their muted display at Swansea came without a single shot on target.
The decisive moment came in the 66th minute when Brazilian winger Ronald struck from the edge of the area after being set up by substitute Melker Widell.
The result turned up the heat on Selles, whose tenure has opened with a 4-1 home thrashing by Bristol City, a cup exit to Birmingham and now a toothless display in south Wales.
'We need to find our platform, but it's the nature of football,' said Selles when asked if he feared supporters would turn on him.
'We know how it works and I can ask them to be calm. But they are going to tell me, probably, 'F*** off' – something like that, no?
'It's how you say in English? Sorry for my English, but I didn't know any better way to express that one.'
Selles, previously in charge of Southampton, Reading and Hull City, faced scepticism when appointed in June after the sacking of Chris Wilder.
While some expected a period of transition, few predicted three straight defeats with seven goals conceded.
'We are going to be honest, we are going to work hard, we are going to persist in what we do and we are going to give it our absolute 100 per cent,' he said.
'At some point the situation will turn and we will start to win football matches.
'That's as much as I can say, but everyone is free to feel what they want to feel.'
On the pitch, the Blades looked disjointed and uninspired.
Star midfielder Gustavo Hamer cut a frustrated figure and even exchanged words with angry fans at full-time.
By contrast, Swansea were energetic, cohesive and deserving of the victory.
Summer recruits Malick Yalcouye, Cameron Burgess and Widell all impressed and boss Alan Sheehan praised both their performance and resilience.
'I am really pleased,' said Sheehan.
'The only critical thing we can say again is not being more clinical and putting the game to bed.
'This was a team that was one game away from the Premier League. The stature of the club is big, so to go toe-to-toe and come out on top deservingly is great.
'My only criticism is that it wasn't by more.
'But to limit a team like that, with the quality they have, to zero shots on target shows a good defensive structure.'
There was further good news for Swansea as Nottingham Forest's New Zealand international Marko Stamenic was in the stands ahead of completing a permanent switch to the club.
Sheehan added: 'Marco is a player that we've been after for a while. He'll bring some physicality, athleticism and another international coming in the building.'

Just five weeks after being crowned kings of the world, their bid to be serious contenders for the Premier League title took an early knock. Winning a glorified invitational event in mid-summer is one thing. Taking three points from a competitive game against most teams in the English top flight is quite another. Boss Enzo Maresca warned as much before the game, reminding everyone that Crystal Palace had beaten Manchester City and champions Liverpool in two showpiece occasions. Palace might even have won but for a VAR intervention. By the letter of Law 13 - unlucky for some - Marc Guehi had been too close to the Chelsea wall when he cleared out Moises Caicedo. Neither side did enough to deserve to win, creating few chances between them. Ex-Premier League ref on Eberechi Eze's disallowed goal vs Chelsea But Chelsea will be the more disappointed that a third game in the row between the two teams ended in stalemate. After the disappointment of the Club World Cup banners, genuine joy almost arrived inside three minutes when Marc Cucurella headed a corner goalwards, but Palace's Ismaila Sarr nodded the ball off the line. Meanwhile the away fans were in no mood to celebrate their own recent success, in the FA Cup and Community Shield. And no wonder. Although cup final matchwinner Eze and captain Marc Guehi both started the game, both may be gone before the transfer window closes. What is certain is that the Europa League place they played such a big part in earning, has already been taken off them. The Palace supporters soon launched into a loud, foul-mouthed chant cursing Uefa, former owner John Textor, whose involved with French club Lyon caused the issue, and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose complaint led to his club being promoted from the Conference League at Palace's expense. Within 13 minutes, the travelling support could add VAR to the list of those conspiring against them. Eze thought he had given his team the lead with a thumping free kick. But VAR Hames Bell advised referee England to take a look at the monitor. Most neutrals will feel it was a clever, legitimate goal. Or no less legitimate than the set-piece routines that involved blatant blocking of opponents, with zero intention to play the ball. But Guehi's shoulder-barge on Caicedo led to the goal being ruled out. Palace were encouraged, though, and a fine move ended with Jean-Philippe Mateta drawing a save from Robert Sanchez. But otherwise the home team created precious little. Was the lack of fluency caused by the absence of Levi Colwill? Maresca had complained pre-match about the club's reluctance to buy him a new ball-playing centre back and said Tosin Adarabioyo was the only fit central defender capable of playing the Colwill role. Tosin was then injured in Saturday training, so rookie defender Josh Acheampong made only his third Premier League start. The biggest Chelsea cheers of the half were for Acheampong's crunching tackle on Daniel Munoz, and for his brave follow-up challenge which drew a foul from Mateta that earned the Palace striker a booking. 9 Cole Palmer was not able to drag his side to three points on opening weekend Credit: Getty Palace, too, struggled to fashion chances and looked most dangerous from set-pieces. Little changed early in the second half and Maresca had seen enough after less than nine minutes. Neither of his wingers had been effective, but it was Jamie Gittens who came off, with Pedro Neto swapping to the left side. On came teenage sensation Estevao to huge acclaim. Moments later Mateta should have been sent off. His foul on Caicedo was spiteful and fully deserving of a second yellow card. When a Palmer cross was deflected into Estevao's path, he first miscontrolled the ball, then sent it flashing high and wide. Chelsea issue title message they didn't want to send in controversial draw
CHELSEA 0-0 CRYSTAL PALACE: Eberechi Eze's first half goal was disallowed after VAR's intervention as the Eagles held their hosts on the opening day of the Premier League season Chelsea got their season off to a sluggish start as Crystal Palace held the Blues to a draw at Stamford Bridge. The Eagles have got their campaign underway in a positive fashion by earning a point against potential title contenders, just a week after beating Liverpool in the Community Shield. And the Eagles may feel they could have earned more in west London. Eberechi Eze's rocket free-kick looked to have provided Palace with an early lead befor VAR's intervention. In shifting Moises Caicedo out of the way, Marc Guehi was judged to have moved too close to Chelsea's wall. After watching a replay Darren England took action and the scores remained goalless Eze still played a starring role, despite the possiblity it was his last outing for Palace, as Oliver Glasner's side defended well against the Club World Cup champions while still offering some threat of their own. Enzo Maresca's team looked strong but lacked some polish as they struggled to convert possession into meaningful opportunities. They found one in stoppage time but substitute Andrey Santos could not keep his composure when afforded time in the Palace box. The Brazilian blazed the ball over the bar as the side's could not be separated. Mirror Football takes a look at the talking points to arise from the match. Eberechi Eze The attacker was the talk of the afternoon even before kick-off. The were rumours the Palace star could miss the game ahead of a move to Tottenham, but the Eagles opted to utilise one of their most talented stars. And the England international showed exactly why he is sought-after. Eze time and again forced Reece James into difficult situations and while it was disallowed, the Crystal Palace ace showed his quality from a dead ball. There's little doubt Eze has Champions League quality, and at 27 he is probably at the peak of his powers while finding his final opportunities of being able to achieve a move to the top. Whether Spurs represents that for some is more questionable, but Eze showed a professionalism and quality that isn't always present in the top flight in his outing against Chelsea. Probably the best player on the pitch. VAR doing its job In ruling out Eberechi Eze's free kick, VAR once again did its job — highlighting the laws football fans don't know about and don't like. As everyone started to lament that cancelling Eze's effort for Marc Guehi's physicality with Moises Caicedo was soft, a greater frustration emerged. Instead it was Guehi's proximity to Chelsea's wall that was problematic. There was little appeal or complaint on the pitch after the ball hit the net, but a few more from the stands and beyond as they came to understand why a free kick was awarded. "There are times when you ask in football where you ask if something is right or wrong," said Chris Sutton on Sky Sports. "And that just seems mightily, mightily harsh." It's hard to disagree, and it feels like the application of this law may not have been the most consistent in recent years given the sheer surprise at its existence from so many. Do Chelsea need a defender? With Levi Colwill already set to miss the bulk of the season after undergoing ACL surgery, Enzo Maresca made it pretty clear he wanted a new defender despite noting the club would rely on internal solutions. For the opening day, that was expected to be Tosin Adarabioyo. The former Fulham man picked up an injury to leave Trevoh Chalobah in need for a new partner however. That offered 19-year-old star Josh Acheampong his chance in the centre of defence. "I am very confident he is ready," Maresca said. "We played already some games in the last season in the Premier League with Josh, so we think that he is ready. For sure he is a talented footballer and can help this club in the future." The player on show on Sunday certainly looked ready too deliver. Much of his experience has come as a full-back but Acheampong looked at home even with the difficult prospect of facing Jean Philippe Mateta. The teenager's outing will have done little to sway Chelsea's sporting directors that they need to align with Maresca on this issue. Estevao Willian's Premier League debut The 18-year-old Brazilian has finally arrived at Stamford Bridge after a deal was agreed more than a year ago. The winger is one of South America's most talked about talents and Chelsea paid out out an initial £29million fee to get a deal over the line. The introduction of the former Palmeiras star immediately of forced Palace backwards and advanced Chelsea into their territory. Estevao's direct running showed the fearlessness you'd expect. The youngster picked up his first Premier League yellow card when he came dashing back to prevent a Crystal Palace counter-attack but the recklessness is maybe outweighed by his enthusiasm. There's so much talent there, getting the balance correct between nuturing it and unleashing it is going to be difficult. Estevao looks ready to make an impact however. Chelsea's title credentials? Chelsea's Club World Cup win in the summer certainly will have added some weight to the club's ambitions and how they are seen by the outside world. The west London side have even been tipped to take the title by some. While there were elements to prompt excitement on Sunday, there was enough to temper expectation too — though the side's truncated pre-season must be remembered too. Despite plenty of possession, there weren't too many clear-cut chances for much of the match. Chelsea replenished their forward line in the summer with Joao Pedro and Liam Delap but the former failed to make a lasting impression after starting the match. It is the area Chelsea will hope to improve if they are to be among the team's challenging come the end of the season. But their opponent's should not be overlooked. Oliver Glasner has made complaints about the side's transfer inactivity but they remain a strong outfit with a talented spine. They will be no pushovers this season.
