Arsenal: Ex-Tottenham star Ivan Perisic reveals what Gunners have 'lacked' to end trophy drought
Ivan Perisic says Arsenal's recent trophy drought can be attributed to lacking 'that little bit' as he plots to deny Mikel Arteta's side their only realistic hope of winning silverware this season.
Perisic, formerly of Tottenham, has helped PSV Eindhoven reach the Champions League round of 16 stage this season and they have been paired with Arsenal after seeing off Juventus.
The Champions League takes on added importance for the Gunners after they crashed out of both domestic competitions in the space of a month and now trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 13 points.
Although Arsenal have a game in hand over the Reds, Arne Slot's side remain heavy favourites to be crowned champions of England come May.
As a result, European football's biggest prize in club football - a competition the north London outfit have never won - has become their most feasible chance of ending their five-year wait for a major trophy.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday night's first-leg clash in Eindhoven, Perisic believes PSV have what it takes to knock Arsenal out at the round of 16 stage.
"It will be a tough match against a young team with a strong coach. Arsenal often missed just that little bit to win something last year. We have to be fully ready, then we have a good chance to beat them.
'I believe in our team and we have to play at our peak. When you hear the Champions League anthem, it still gives something special."
PSV head into the tie in poor form themselves. Their only win in their last six games across all competition was against Juventus in the Champions League playoff round.
Furthermore, they lost a KNVB Cup semi-final to Go Ahead Eagles last week and Saturday's loss to the same opposition has left them eight points behind Ajax at the top of the Eredivisie table.
Arsenal and PSV are no strangers to meeting on the European stage in recent years. In fact, this will be their third meeting in as many seasons with the Gunners losing at the Philips Stadion in the Europa League group phase during the 2023/24 campaign before drawing 1-1 in the same venue last season.

Dortmund agree £31m deal to sign Sunderland's Bellingham
Jobe Bellingham is yet to win his first cap for England's senior team [Getty Images] Borussia Dortmund have agreed a deal with Sunderland to sign Jobe Bellingham for an initial 32m euros (£26.96m) plus 5m euros (£4.2m) in add-ons. The 19-year-old midfielder had garnered interest from across Europe but it is Dortmund, former home of elder brother Jude, who are set to secure his signature. Advertisement Bellingham has played for Sunderland since 2023 and helped them secure Premier League promotion this past season, making 43 appearances for the Black Cats and scoring four goals across all competitions. The England youth international started his career at Birmingham City, coming through the academy before playing two years of senior football for the club. Borussia Dortmund experienced an inconsistent season in 2024-25 but had a strong finish to the campaign winning their final five matches to finish fourth and secure Champions League football for next season. If the deal is completed by 10 June, Bellingham would be able to play in the upcoming Club World Cup. Advertisement That tournament takes place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July. Bellingham has been named in the European Under-21 Championship, to be held in Slovakia from 11-28 June, but England boss Lee Carsley has said he will release players so they can compete in the Club World Cup. Mirroring his brother It is thought Bellingham is keen to follow in his brother's footsteps. Jude, two years Jobe's senior, also came through Birmingham City's academy before moving to Dortmund in 2020 and then Real Madrid in 2023. Bellingham is already mirroring his brother's career with the move to Dortmund and he was also named the Championship's Young Player of the Year in May, five years after Jude won the same award.

Mbappé steers France to 2-0 win over Germany in Nations League
MUNICH -- Kylian Mbappé led France to Nations League consolation before Spain and Portugal play the final on Sunday. The Real Madrid star scored one goal and set up the other as France defeated host nation Germany 2-0 in the third-place decider. Aurélien Tchouaméni set up club teammate Mbappé to score just before the break after Germany had dominated the first half, and Mbappé set up substitute Michael Olise to seal the result in the 84th after a much-improved second-half performance from the visitors. France coach Didier Deschamps had made his lack of enthusiasm for the game clear the day before, noting his team had little to gain from playing it, and it was apparent which side was more motivated in front of the Stuttgart fans. Germany missed a host of chances then had Deniz Undav's equalizer ruled out for a foul by Niclas Füllkrug in the buildup. France was without injured Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembélé. Both sides were forced to play for the consolation prize after losing their semifinals. Germany lost 2-1 to Portugal on Wednesday before France lost 5-4 to European champion Spain on Thursday. Spain was playing Portugal later in Munich.

Advertisement 'I've never been able to plan long-term,' Alisson told a press conference ahead of his country's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay, according to the Liverpool Echo. 'Obviously now I have one year left on my contract and another year of club option, which they will probably exercise.' Alisson has won two Premier League titles with Liverpool, in addition to the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Before moving to Italian football in 2016, he launched his career with Porto Alegre-based Internacional. Neymar, Thiago Silva and former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho are among the Brazilian stars to have recently returned to play in their homeland following successful spells in Europe. Advertisement 'I talk to athletes who have made this move to return, some have had good experiences, others not,' said Alisson. 'Each one will have their own experience but I want to return, especially to Inter. I don't know when it will happen, but I still want to do it at a high level. That's what I have planned.'
