Masayoshi Son hints at succession plan while chasing AI ambition

Economic Times28-06-2025
Reuters SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son Masayoshi Son acknowledged the outlines of a succession plan at SoftBank Group Corp., addressing what may be investors' single biggest concern regarding the long-term future of the Japanese company.Son said he plans to hold SoftBank's reins another ten years, but added he has several candidates for its next chief in mind from within the technology group. The candidates work alongside the billionaire every day, although he hasn't disclosed who they are to anyone, the 67-year-old said during a general shareholders' meeting in Tokyo on Friday.
Son fielded repeated questions from shareholders worried about a SoftBank without its charismatic leader or a succession plan. The chief executive officer responded that he's healthy and intends to continue to lead and aim to realize an era where artificial intelligence is pervasive in society. 'I look forward to seeing a successor grow as quickly as possible so that I can appoint them, but I still have some passion left and want to keep at this,' he said. Son added, however, that he's mentally prepared to hand over the reins at any time, should he stand in the way of SoftBank's growth. He mentioned the head of telecom unit, Junichi Miyakawa, who is in charge of rolling out AI infrastructure within Japan and widely seen as an example of how others in the company can lead as Son shifts his focus elsewhere. Miyakawa is doing 'an extremely solid job,' Son said. 'I feel very pleased, encouraged and reassured by his efforts. As a result, I have almost never felt the need to interfere in what he does. I trust him.'SoftBank's shares rose to close up 2.5%, buoyed by a broader rally that boosted the Nikkei Stock Average.Past lieutenants who have been officially or unofficially in the running to be Son's successor have included Nikesh Arora, Marcelo Claure and Katsunori Sago. All have left SoftBank. One shareholder even asked if AI would either extend Son's lifespan or make it possible for Son to somehow remotely control the company from beyond the grave. Son responded by saying that while he intends to use AI 'more than anyone,' he didn't see it replacing him.The annual shareholders' meeting has long been a platform for Son to share his vision of a future of tech-driven progress. Many investors have hung onto his words and their shares from before the dot-com boom and bust.Shareholders asked about SoftBank's ability to finance big bets such as the Stargate data center projects, and Son's ability to deliver on his goals to lead in an age of AI.One such project is a partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to build a large AI manufacturing hub in Arizona, Bloomberg reported earlier. Son said he's now cornered key artificial intelligence chip architecture and seeks to become the world's top platform by the time AI surpasses human abilities — or what he and other AI proponents call artificial super-intelligence.
'We want to become the world's top platformer for ASI,' he said, adding that it'll be a winner-take-all arena. SoftBank controls chip designer Arm Holdings Plc and plans to invest as much as $30 billion in ChatGPT maker OpenAI. 'These are indispensable for ASI,' he said, noting also that SoftBank has acquired Graphcore Ltd. and has plans to buy Ampere Computing LLC. 'I'm all in.'

Why Learning Foreign Languages Is the New Career Power Move for Indian Youth

India PR Distribution New Delhi [India], August 1: In today's globalized world, the ability to communicate in more than one language is not just a skill--it's a career accelerator. As India's young workforce continues to compete on a global stage, learning foreign languages such as German, French, Japanese, and Spanish has become one of the smartest moves for career growth, overseas education, and international job opportunities. Foreign Languages Open Global Career Doors From multinational corporations to international universities, the demand for multilingual professionals is on the rise. Countries like Germany, Japan, and France are actively welcoming Indian students and skilled professionals. In many cases, proficiency in the native language is either a requirement or a strong advantage. For example, German companies operating in India often prefer candidates who can speak and understand German. Similarly, Japan offers a large number of technical internships and long-term employment options for Indians with Japanese language skills. The ability to communicate in the local language not only improves the quality of professional interactions but also makes integration into society smoother. Boosting Employability and Salary Potential Hiring managers consistently place language skills among the top desirable traits in global candidates. Bilingual and multilingual individuals are often offered better job roles and salary packages. In sectors like hospitality, aviation, international business, IT, and translation services, foreign language proficiency is a competitive edge. Students who pursue international education also benefit greatly. Whether applying to German public universities, enrolling in French business schools, or preparing for Japanese corporate internships, language skills strengthen a student's profile. Many institutes are now helping bridge this gap. The Indian Institute of Foreign Languages offers structured programs in German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and English--both online and offline--making it easier for students across India to gain certification and fluency. India's Youth are Catching On More Indian students and professionals are recognizing the value of foreign languages. Enrollments in language certification programs have increased significantly over the past few years, especially among students preparing for study abroad, jobs in Europe or Japan, and global business ventures. With the rise of digital learning, students from cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and even Tier 2 towns can now access high-quality language courses from the comfort of their homes. Institutes offering weekend and evening batches have made it easier for working professionals to learn without disrupting their daily routines. A Lifelong Skill With Endless Benefits Beyond careers, learning a foreign language also improves memory, cognitive flexibility, and cross-cultural understanding. It builds confidence, sharpens communication, and makes international travel more rewarding. In an era where remote jobs, overseas migration, and global networking are common, the ability to speak an additional language is no longer optional--it's essential. Where to Begin? For Indian youth looking to get started, it's important to choose the right course and certification. Most global employers and universities recognize international language tests such as Goethe-Zertifikat (German), JLPT (Japanese), DELF/DALF (French), and DELE (Spanish). Institutions like the Indian Institute of Foreign Languages not only prepare students for these exams but also provide career guidance, flexible timing, and access to native-speaking trainers and online learning tools. Conclusion In a world that's becoming more interconnected every day, foreign language skills are the bridge between Indian talent and global opportunity. Whether your goal is to study in Germany, work in Japan, or run a business with international clients, speaking a second language gives you a powerful head start. For India's young professionals and students, learning a foreign language may be the smartest career move they make this decade. WinZO disputes Google's CCI proposal on Play Store rules

Bengaluru: Real‑money gaming platform WinZO has raised concerns over Google's latest proposal to the Competition Commission of India (CCI), arguing that it does not adequately address the anti‑competitive issues flagged in an ongoing investigation. The case originates from WinZO's December 2022 complaint alleging that Google abused its dominant position by restricting Play Store access to only fantasy sports and rummy apps while excluding other real‑money gaming categories. With Google controlling 96% of India's app distribution market, WinZO said this policy inflated user acquisition costs by 'at least 10x' for apps distributed outside the Play Store. Acting on the complaint, the CCI in November 2024 ordered a formal investigation, citing prima facie violations of competition law, including the imposition of unfair conditions, denial of market access and limiting of market development. The Commission had noted Google's lack of clear criteria for its pilot programme, inconsistent enforcement of its ads policy and 'misleading payment warnings' shown to users sideloading apps, which it said artificially deterred usage. In a public notice issued recently the CCI invited comments on Google's commitment offer. Google's proposal includes allowing all real‑money games that are certified by recognised third‑party bodies, replacing its pilot programme for fantasy sports and rummy apps and permitting certified skill‑based games to advertise on Google Ads. If approved, Google has committed to implement the Play Store changes within 120 days and its advertising changes within 150 days of the CCI's order. The deadline for public comments is August 20, 2025. Responding to WinZO's objections, a Google spokesperson said the company welcomed the CCI's market testing of its proposed framework, describing it as the result of 'constructive discussions' with the regulator and Indian developers. Google added that it is confident the proposal will create 'a more open and safe ecosystem' for real‑money gaming apps, empower local developers and prioritise user safety. In its statement, WinZO said Google's commitments 'must be robust and genuinely eliminate the discriminatory practices identified,' adding that the proposed framework's reference to 'developing' a commercial model for real‑money gaming lacked clear timelines or objective criteria. WinZO, which reported a 70% rise in revenue to Rs 1,055 crore and a 151% increase in profit to Rs 315 crore in FY24, said it will continue to participate in the consultation process 'to ensure fairness, transparency and a level playing field in India's digital economy.'
