Fourth man charged over alleged kidnapping, intimidation at Muswellbrook

The Advertiser16-05-2025

DETECTIVES investigating the alleged kidnapping and assault of man at Muswellbrook and a related intimidation and predatory driving in March have charged a fourth man.
Three men - 34-year-old Brett Leonard Robertson, 21-year-old Angus Wilfred Higgins and 38-year-old Luke William Charles Whalan - are all behind bars after Strike Force Sanderston investigators swooped over the last week, charging the men over the alleged kidnapping on the New England Highway in the early hours of March 21.
And on Thursday, detectives, with assistance from the Raptor Squad and Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, arrested 31-year-old Christopher Jordan Bell at a house at Springfield on the Central Coast.
He was charged with six offences, including kidnapping in company, predatory driving and intimidation and is expected to appear in Gosford Local Court on Friday.
According to police, it was just before 4am on March 21 when a 25-year-old man was allegedly forced to stop his car on the New England Highway at Muswellbrook by a group of five men in a silver Subaru Impreza.
The man was allegedly pulled from his vehicle before he was assaulted and forced into the Subaru and driven to Tindale Street at Muswellbrook.
Police believe the Subaru remained in Tindale Street for some time before travelling to Denman or a nearby rural area.
A short time later, a 35-year-old man was stopped in his vehicle outside the same house in Tindale Street after a Holden Commodore utility crashed into the front of his car.
The 35-year-old was allegedly approached and threatened by someone in the ute before he drove away unharmed.
Police have said they believe the kidnapping and intimidation are linked and earlier this month released CCTV footage of two vehicles and three men who they said would be able to help with the investigation.
Police say they later found the 25-year-old man at Muswellbrook railway station.
He had suffered facial injuries and was treated by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.
He has since been discharged.
Hunter Valley detectives established Strike Force Sanderston to investigate and so far have arrested four men over the kidnapping and intimidation.
Police raided two homes at Scone and Muswellbrook on May 7 and allegedly uncovered a replica firearm, electronics, illegal tobacco products, prohibited drugs, and a range of property believed to be stolen.
Robertson and Higgins were arrested and taken to Muswellbrook police station where they were charged with kidnapping in company.
Robertson was also charged with drug supply, goods in custody, contravening an apprehended violence order and predatory driving.
And on Monday, detectives arrested 38-year-old Whalan at Muswellbrook.
He was charged with kidnapping in company, intimidation and sexually touching another person without consent.
All three men have been refused bail and will next appear in Newcastle Local Court in July.
Following further inquiries, investigators went to the Central Coast on Thursday where they raided the home at Springfield and arrested Bell.

South Australian government's record crime and justice spend in state budget

Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here BREAKING Man and woman charged with murder of missing teen Pheobe Bishop The South Australian government has unveiled its latest state budget, with a significant emphasis on law enforcement and justice initiatives in the lead-up to the March election. While the government has acknowledged cost-of-living pressures, the budget's focus on bolstering the police force has drawn both support and criticism. A central feature of the budget is a $172 million commitment to increase the number of sworn police officers by 326, aiming to bring the total force to 5000 by 2030-31. Alongside the focus on crime and justice, the budget includes some help for families with school-aged children. (Nine) "[This aims] to make sure that South Australia doesn't get into the same sorts of trouble we see in other places around the country," Treasurer Stephen Mullighan said. More than $45 million has been allocated to enhance road safety measures, including the deployment of more mobile phone detection cameras. Alongside the focus on crime and justice, the budget includes some help for families with school-aged children. The $200 school materials charge discount and the sports voucher program will continue, while the cost of the 28-day student metroCARD will be reduced from $28 to $10, potentially saving families $242 per year. When questioned about whether there's enough relief for South Australians still doing it tough, Mullighan said "last year's budget included a really significant cost of living package aimed specifically at low income earners and it wasn't once-off relief". While the government has acknowledged cost-of-living pressures, the budget's focus on bolstering the police force has drawn both support and criticism. (Nine) However, Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia criticised the government for a lack of help for struggling households. "Cost of living is the number one issue and there was a great opportunity for the premier and his government to deliver on that front," he said. The budget also allocates $70 million for drought relief and $384 million for the Whyalla Steelworks, anticipating an extended sale process - the funds contingent on Commonwealth support. While the budget is currently in surplus, debt levels are projected to rise, reaching almost $49 billion by 2028-2029. "Running budget surpluses while we are investing in the future ... taking on additional debt to fund those infrastructure developments gives us the confidence we can afford to service that debt," Mullighan said. Boogie burglar dances like nobody's watching before Victorian school break-in

A toe-tapping thief showed off his dance moves on camera before burglarising a school of thousands of dollars worth of gear, police say. After getting out of the car, the man performed a jaunty dance that CCTV cameras faithfully recorded. The man then broke into the school and stole three laptops and projector. Police estimated the value of the gear at more than $5000. The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 30s, with a medium build and long, dark brown hair. He was wearing a red and black hooded jumper, black running shoes, red headband, and blue gloves. Police have released CCTV of the incident.
