It would be stretching it to say he was like a kid in a sweet shop, but Gavin Hunt has certainly got his mojo back following an uncharacteristic enforced break from the game after being sacked by SuperSport United midway through last season.
At the launch of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season in Sandton on Tuesday, the multiple championship-winning coach's excitement at returning to the coalface of the game he lives for was palpable.

'It's good,' he said, his pearly whites confirming his mood.
'Anytime you go to a new team, it gives you a new lease of life. You fall in love with the game again.'
Hunt has found his football rebirth at newly-promoted Durban City, having been sent out to pasture by SuperSport. So it's understandable that his passion for the game has been rekindled.
'Sometimes you fall out of love with the game when things happen like it happened,' he told the media contingent. 'But it is what it is. We could have made the top eight if I had stayed, but …'
That chapter now closed, the man who led SuperSport to three successive league titles faces a new challenge — guiding the top-flight newcomers to safety and avoiding the fate of so many rookies: a swift return to the lower division.
He is embracing the task with characteristic energy.
'It's a situation where you can really build something, go forward and try to build a team. Obviously you need a little bit of time, but in football sometimes there's no time.'
Hunt believes he has a decent squad at his disposal — one he hopes to mould into a competitive outfit.
'There are a few young players; good players and proper players of a proper age. There's not too many old players, so we can build there.'
Inevitably, he was quizzed about working with Ernst Middendorp, the club's technical director. Given both men's reputations for being strong-headed, many expect fireworks.
'It's different obviously, you know — but, ja — we are working well together. There's no problems. You can't say two bulls in a kraal. I've got to make a decision and obviously that decision falls on me. It is what it is. It's nothing unusual.'
He dismissed suggestions that he should be watching his back given there's another coach in the mix:
'People who walk like that on the wall don't trust in their own abilities.'
For now, survival is Durban City's clear goal — but with a coach as experienced and accomplished as Hunt at the helm, they surely can afford to dream a little bigger.

Tinkler targets Top 3 and CAF return with Sekhukhune United

Eric Tinkler believes Sekhukhune United have the squad depth and quality to break into the top three this season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler has outlined his ambitions of securing a Top 3 finish this season, with the ultimate goal of returning to the CAF Confederation Cup. The 2025/26 Betway Premiership offers a fresh opportunity for Babina Noko to make that push, and their campaign gets underway with a high-stakes opening fixture against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off). Tinkler's charges will have little room to ease into the season, especially considering their previous success at the same venue. Sekhukhune were one of just two teams to beat Pirates at Orlando last term, a 1-0 result that dealt a major blow to the Buccaneers' title hopes. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ However, that statement victory wasn't enough to secure continental qualification, as Sekhukhune narrowly missed out on third place — a finish that would have seen them return to the Confederation Cup. After consecutive fourth-place finishes, the club has been active in the transfer market in a bid to bolster its squad for a stronger run this season. Tinkler believes they now have the depth and quality to finally break into the top three. 'We are hoping that we can improve on last season; that is always the objective and the target you set for yourself as a club and as a coach individually,' Tinkler said during the Betway Premiership launch. 'The club has finished fourth twice, two seasons in a row, just fell short of CAF Confed, so next season you want to take that one step higher. 'We are not looking at it as being in the top three but more as points — can we achieve a certain amount of points this season? The club has never broken the 50-point mark, can we do that as a club? 'Because that will mean we are moving in the right direction as a club and come the end of the season, that will possibly guarantee you a top-three finish.' While Mamelodi Sundowns continue to dominate South African league football, Tinkler insists the focus should not solely be on dethroning the champions but on collecting points consistently against all teams. The former Pirates boss has challenged his side to be more ruthless throughout the league season, particularly in away games, if they hope to close the considerable gap on Sundowns, who finished last season with an impressive 73 points. 'It's not beating Sundowns, it's about being able to beat all the other sides in the league,' Tinkler continued. 'Those are the games that are the most important for collecting points away from home. Those are the results that become more important if you want to be competing with Sundowns. 'When I was still coaching Pirates the target used to be 60 points and you win the league and we used to break them down into ten points every five games. It's 73 points now and we are achieving seven or eight points. 'The gap between us and Sundowns is still massive, can we close that gap, can we hit 50? We are still far behind Sundowns, but we are moving in the right direction.'

Stellenbosch's young guns hungry to turn the tables on Kaizer Chiefs, says Barker

Langelihle Phili of Stellenbosch FC | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Stellenbosch FC's MTN8 quarter-final hero Langelihle Phili may have to wait a little longer before he cracks a place in the starting line-up, according to coach Steve Barker. Phili is one of the most promising young attackers in the country, having played a considerable role in helping the SA U20 team to the Afcon title earlier this year. The 20-year-old showed his prowess in front of goal again last Sunday by coming off the bench to net the match-winning goal in extra-time to see off AmaZulu at the DHL Stadium. The youngster would no doubt have wanted to continue the momentum in the much-anticipated Betway Premiership opener against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday (kick-off 5.30pm). 'Everybody is knocking on the door,' Barker said, at the Premiership launch in Sandton on Tuesday. 'That's the nice part, especially young players. They are hungry to play, hungry to start. But he plays in the same position as Sanele Barns, who scored two goals on Sunday, so it doesn't make it easy.' Barker was, though, looking forward to Phili building on his positive start to the new season. 'It's nice when a player comes on and wins the game for you. Langelihle is a very exciting player. I am looking forward to him having a breakthrough season. 'I think scoring in the first game of the season will give him the real confidence and belief that he can reach the potential that he has.' Barker's attention is fully focused on turning the tables on Chiefs in the season opener after the Amakhosi held the upper hand over their Western Cape rivals last season. Nasreddine Nabi's Phefeni Glamour Boys achieved a hat-trick of victories over Stellies in all competitions and it still rankles with the veteran coach. 📸 𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬: The 2025/2026 #BetwayPrem launch event at The Galleria — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) August 5, 2025

Cardoso driven to defend Sundowns' historic championship run

Miguel Cardoso is motivated to guide Mamelodi Sundowns to a ninth Betway Premiership title amid fierce competition. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The excitement of having led Mamelodi Sundowns to winning the inaugural Betway Premiership title still lingers with Miguel Cardoso, and the 53-year-old coach intends to use it as fuel for the upcoming campaign. Sundowns are looking to win the domestic championship a record-extending ninth time when they kickstart the season with a clash away to Chippa United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm). It is a tricky clash for the Brazilians, given that the Chilli Boys now have a former Sundowns tactician, Sinethemba Badela, as their coach. 'Being part of the Premiership and being one of the 16 coaches that lead teams in the PSL is a privilege,' the Portuguese told newshounds, during the season launch in Sandton, Johannesburg. "That excitement still drives me and I will continue to try to give that to my players. I think we created a fantastic relationship; we have a wonderful energy inside the club.' He believes they have great support from the board, who have 'a strong commitment to the club's growth and that's exactly the starting point for the success that the club has achieved in recent history.' All that notwithstanding, Cardoso anticipates a challenging season ahead. Launch complete ✅️ The 2025/26 Betway Premiership is good to go 🔥🔥🔥 We will see you ka weekend #BetwayPrem — Betway ZA (@Betway_za) August 5, 2025 'That's exactly what we want to do for the next season. It will be a season obviously in which I hope to keep the good moments as much as possible. "For sure there will be days that will not be happy and those values that we developed are the ones that will make us keep the pace in the right way and in the right direction. We have strong challenges ahead but beautiful things that can appear in the season, so let's see how the players take their responsibilities.' The former Esperance coach cannot wait for the transfer window period to close. 'Let's hope the market finishes as quickly as possible so that then we know who we have and how we can be in the future.' He knows they are going to have to work very hard to retain their title, though. 'Obviously the competition is very tough. I've always said that the Betway Premiership is a very tough championship and despite the records that were broken by us last season, it has to do with the higher standards we set rather than the lower performance from our opponents. "We have a lot of respect for the work of coaches and players from every team. We know that we have big contenders ahead and only by being ourselves and being loyal to our values can we think about winning again. "So, by that commitment, we can win every time or lose as few points as possible so that we can compete for the championship.'
