'It's really never stopped once demolition stopped; I mean, the other contract started moving in, getting ready to do what they need to do,' Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said.
Construction on the $237 million arena is now underway to replace the former civic center.
'It will knock your socks off with what this thing will look like,' Stimpson said.
Stimpson said the new arena will help the city generate money, leaving him confident in the new mayoral administration.
'You will have people coming from out of town coming to Mobile because of what's being booked here,' Stimpson said.
The facility will be home to concerts, sporting events and other entertainment.
Oak View Group Co-Chairman Peter Luukko said the arena will bring top-tier artists to Mobile.
'The Eagles, Bon Jovi, maybe if Beyonce plays indoors,' Luukko said.
The search for a professional hockey team is still ongoing, but Stimpson said they have a few leads.
Meanwhile, OVG plans to have fun with fans as time leads up to announcing who it will be.
'We're going to let the fans pick the name,' Luukko said.

Saquon Barkley hurdles way on to ‘Madden 26' cover

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley vaulted onto the cover of the 'Madden 26' video game. EA Sports released a cover image on social media Monday featuring the Super Bowl champion hurdling a defender. It pays homage to a viral highlight from Barkley's remarkable 2024 season in a Week 9 win against Jacksonville. Barkley leapt over Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones with an acrobatic, backward hurdle on a 14-yard reception. 'It was the best play I've ever seen,' Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said afterward, echoing the thoughts of many. 'Saquon you're INSANNE!!' basketball great LeBron James posted on social media. Barkley finished that game with 159 rushing yards en route to an NFL-leading 2,005 yards on the ground. The NFL Offensive Player of the Year added 499 more rushing yards in the postseason as Philadelphia ultimately upended the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX. Barkley, 28, is the first Eagles player featured on the cover of the popular franchise since quarterback Donovan McNabb on 'Madden NFL 06.' Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

New Details Emerge About Eagles, Bryce Huff Trade

New Details Emerge About Eagles, Bryce Huff Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Philadelphia Eagles signed edge rusher Bryce Huff to a three-year deal last offseason, the organization was hoping to add one of the better pass rushers in the game. Advertisement Huff was never able to reach that potential, though. He recorded just 1.5 sacks during his run with the Eagles last season, and was a healthy scratch during Super Bowl LIX. Now, he's been traded to the San Francisco 49ers. While details surrounding the trade have been pretty sparse since the two sides agreed to terms, they have finally been made public. "Trade compensation update: it's a 2026 conditional fifth-round pick that can turn into a fourth," CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones wrote of Philly's compensation. "Condition(s) tied to performance. All pending physical." For a player that never saw the field last season, to get a conditional fifth-round pick is a pretty solid return for the Eagles. They clearly did not have Huff in their plans for the 2025 season, and cut their losses as fast as they could. Advertisement San Francisco also has a need for edge rushers who can get after the quarterback. Depending on how Huff plays this season, there's a legitimate chance he is able to give the Eagles a fourth round pick instead. When Huff left the New York Jets in free agency, his departure awarded the Jets a third round compensatory pick. In this case, the Eagles could be awarded a fourth-round comp pick if he reaches his agreed upon performance markers. It is still giving away a player for lesser value. That won't change his legacy in Philadelphia. But it at least shortens the blow of whiffing on a free agent like this. Other organizations would not have this luxury. DeVonta Smith Gives Hilarious Answer on Eagles' Tush Push

DeVonta Smith Gives Hilarious Answer on Eagles' Tush Push originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When the Philadelphia Eagles run their famous "Tush Push" play, everyone on the field has a role to play. The offensive line must get low enough to create some room for quarterback Jalen Hurts to shuffle his feet for a few yards. Advertisement For skill players like DeVonta Smith, if they aren't the ones pushing Hurts, they are usually supposed to set the edge along the way. Anything to make the play easier. Philadelphia's star wide receiver may know his role on the play, but also knows he doesn't really need to do anything to make it work. That's why in his latest interview, the receiver the team calls "Smitty" had a hilarious take on his role regarding the famous variation of the quarterback sneak. 'They really got an advantage because I ain't doing nothing but sitting there and watching anyway," Smith said on The Offseason podcast. "They be sitting over there talking about yeah, we need you to cut off the edge, alright. I'm finna sit here and watch y'all do this.' Advertisement The good news for Smith is that he will get to relax on those plays for another season. The NFL failed to ban the Tush Push for 2025 after a relentless campaign from both the league and the Eagles on either side of the aisle. With the Tush Push returning for another season, Smith and the Eagles offense are expected to keep their identity the same in 2025. And it might just help them reach another Super Bowl.
