Japanese man charged with attempted murder after knife attack
The subway knife attack injured two people during rush hour yesterday. (Kyodo News/AP pic) TOKYO : Tokyo police said today they had charged a man with attempted murder after an alleged knife attack on the subway that reportedly injured two people during rush hour the previous day.
Yoshitaka Toda, 43, was arrested yesterday evening at Todai-mae Station in the Japanese capital on suspicion of assaulting a man in his 20s, a police spokesman told AFP.
The suspect, 'with the intent to kill, slashed the victim's head and other body parts with a knife-like object that he was carrying, causing injuries', the spokesman said, reading from a prepared statement without elaborating.
Local media said Toda allegedly attacked the victim several times – first on the station's platform, before the victim dashed inside a subway car where Toda chased him and slashed his head several more times.
Other passengers apprehended Toda, who was arrested by police on the spot, reports said.
Toda and the victim are not believed to have known each other, local media said, adding that one other passenger who helped apprehend the attacker also cut his hand.
Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan, which has a low murder rate and some of the world's toughest gun laws.
But there are occasional stabbing rampages and even shootings, including the assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe in 2022.
A 24-year-old man stabbed a passenger and started a fire on a train in Tokyo on Halloween in 2021 while wearing an outfit resembling comic book villain the Joker.

KUANTAN, June 11 — A woman who was reported to have been swept by the current after the car she was in slid into Sungai Triang, near Bandar Baru Bera, was found drowned this morning. Bera District Police Chief Supt Zulkiflee Nazir said the body of Sakirah Akop, 31, was found floating about 2.5 kilometres from the location where the car had slipped and plunged into the river last Monday. The husband was fishing about eight metres away. In KL, ex-international school staff pleads not guilty to CBT, cheating involving over RM142,000
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — A former employee of an international school pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to three charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM142,354.10 belonging to the school. A. Komala, 33, who served as a parent liaison executive and personal assistant at the time, is accused of misappropriating the sum for personal use at the school located in Persiaran Stonor, Dang Wangi, between June 11 and 28 last year. She was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction. Komala also faces two counts of cheating two Japanese men by deceiving them into believing that the school fee invoices she issued for their children were legitimate. The alleged deception prompted the victims to transfer RM94,509 and RM47,845.10 respectively into a bank account under a company owned by the accused's husband — payments they would not have made had they not been misled. The offences were allegedly committed at the same place and during the same period. The cheating charges were framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan proposed bail at RM30,000 with one surety for all charges, while defence counsel Kelvinder Singh Sindhu appealed for a lower amount, citing that the accused is financially supporting her family. Kelantan police dispose of RM11.3m worth of drugs seized since 1997
KOTA BHARU, June 11 — Kelantan police today disposed of an estimated RM11.3 million worth of various types of illegal drugs and poisons seized from 1997 to 2024. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the case item disposal was implemented in accordance with the Inspector-General of Police Standing Order (PTKPN) D207, after all the cases had been charged and concluded in court. 'The disposal this time involved 467.722 kilogrammes (kg) and 2,165.48 litres of various banned substances, such as syabu (methamphetamine), yaba pills, cough mixtures, ketum juice, psychotropic pills and ganja (cannabis). 'The highest seizure value involved syabu, weighing 301.706kg and estimated at RM9.66 million; followed by 1,721.45 litres of cough mixtures worth over RM1 million,' he told a media conference on the disposal of case items at the Kelantan Police Headquarters here today. In a related development, the Kelantan Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) also recorded positive achievements from January to May this year, with the arrest of 12,298 individuals on various drug-related crimes. 'During that period, the NCID also seized drugs worth RM10.31 million and confiscated RM1.32 million worth of drug traffickers' assets,' he said. — Bernama
