World No. 1 Jannik Sinner pulls out of inaugural US Open mixed doubles competition

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the newly announced US Open mixed doubles competition, which begins on Tuesday, 19 August in New York. The Italian pulled out of the event a day after retiring from the Masters 1000 final against Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati due to illness.Sinner had been scheduled to compete in the much-publicised mixed doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. However, organisers confirmed that he would not take part and named the pairing of Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison as his replacement.advertisementThe announcement came just hours before the first matches were due to take place on Tuesday. Sinner had originally entered with Emma Navarro but was later re-paired with Siniakova.
His eagerly anticipated final with Alcaraz in Cincinnati lasted only five games on Monday. The World No. 1 appeared unwell from the moment he stepped onto court and was unable to continue despite receiving medical treatment. As early as Monday, Sinner had hinted that he might skip the US Open mixed doubles, noting that he would require 'a couple of days' rest' before resuming training for the US Open singles, which begins on 24 September."Now it's time to rest a couple of days before getting back to work," he had said on Monday after congratulating Alcaraz on his title victory.Sinner was among several top singles players to receive wildcards for the experimental mixed doubles competition, which features 16 pairs and occupies a separate slot in the calendar. The two-day event will be staged at Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium at Flushing Meadows. Eight pairs secured direct entry based on combined singles rankings, while another eight pairs were awarded wildcards.A substantial increase in prize money has added to the attraction, with winners set to receive $1,000,000 – a sharp rise from $200,000 last year. The standalone placement on the calendar, in the week preceding the main draw, also makes participation more feasible for players.Nevertheless, the initiative has not been universally welcomed. Critics include veteran doubles specialists and reigning Italian champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who also received a wildcard entry and described the new format as 'a profound injustice.'- EndsYou May Also Like

US Open Mixed Doubles Championship: A successful attempt to revamp the doubles category or a major misstep?

The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship finally introduced the revamp of the mixed doubles category on Tuesday. Thereby, stars collided and a new format was exhibited. However, can the tournament be declared a hit? Let's contemplate. The much-awaited US Open Mixed Doubles Championship finally commenced on Tuesday, August 19, at the iconic Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums. The star power typically reserved for singles events energised the mixed doubles, creating significant buzz. However, given that it was introduced as an attempt to scale up the popularity of the mixed doubles category, let's take into account some parameters to assess whether the revamped category can be gauged as a success or not. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Arthur Ashe saw fans flocking to witness tennis stars Considering the fact that the Arthur Ashe stadium was reportedly more than half full, which is a rarity compared to early-round singles matches, this means the event garnered unprecedented crowds for the doubles event. The strategy to bring big names like Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic, and Iga Swiatek, and many more, to the mixed doubles scene has seemingly worked, as ideal fan engagement was reportedly noted. The matches triggered reactions on social media; thus, it was a trending subject at one stage of the day on Monday. I saw four of the US Open mixed doubles matches today and I had my doubts going in but they are nor exhibition matches.. The players came ready to win, and every match was entertaining. I've never seen so many fans at any doubles match, or even at an early round singles match,… — urban myths, legends (@urbanmyths) August 20, 2025 The television ratings could confirm the resounding success of the tournament, but no figures are currently available. Nevertheless, since the tournament was broadcast by ESPN in the US, it likely amplified visibility and attracted a large audience, as it was aired during prime time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD New format: A big hit? The new format, featuring best-of-three sets (first to win four games wins the set, no-advantage scoring, tiebreaks at 4-4), delivered fast-paced, thrilling matches, such as Pegula/Jack Draper's 4-2, 4-2 win over Alcaraz/Raducanu and defending champions Sara Errani/Andrea Vavassori's 42-minute win over Taylor Fritz/Elena Rybakina. With the shorter format, matches concluded much earlier than with the conventional format, resulting in fans being entertained and relieved early, which was likely a double victory for him.

‘Can't understand playing in heat and humidity in Cincinnati': Roger Federer's former coach dwells on Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz battle in US Open

Ivan Ljubicic, former world number 3 and former coach of Roger Federer, has slammed the Cincinnati tournament for making players play through extreme heat. In the final, Jannik Sinner pulled out against Carlos Alcaraz, after just four games in the first set. He attributed it to 'illness' but it's been speculated that perhaps the conditions got to him. 'What we saw in Cincinnati is sobering. I can't understand why they insist on playing in that heat and humidity. The athletes risk injury, and the fans aren't having fun. Something has to be done,' Ljubicic told La Gazzetta. Lhubicic also answered a direct question if Sinner has any weaknesses in his body. 'For me, these are unrelated cases. Jannik had a hip problem that he fixed, then he was just unlucky: the fall on his elbow, the alleged virus. It doesn't mean his body is fragile at all.' He also dwelt on the Sinner vs Alcaraz rivalry and how it's bound to play out in the rest of the year. First up, he talked about Sinner. 'He lacks nothing. It's true that his serve is his least natural shot, but every champion has a sort of fixation on the shot where he feels least prepared. For Jannik, it's his serve, even though he's improved a lot.' He then praised Alcaraz's ability to be consistent in results even if his performances remain inconsistent. 'He's found consistency in his results, because his performances are always a bit inconsistent. The big difference since Sinner returned from suspension is that the Spaniard has found a way to win even those matches where he can't quite get his moves right. It's the natural development of a player who, let's not forget, is only 22.' Crystal-gazing at the US Open, Ljubicic believes the fast courts in New York might be the big factor if the two players go at each other again. 'The surface is very important. At Wimbledon, for example, Sinner pushed Alcaraz's forehand a lot: it works on grass, but not on clay. The courts in New York are usually quite fast: high trajectories don't pay off, you have to move very well and be at 110% physically. This is a tournament that demands a lot and requires aggressive tennis. Both players practice it; in Alcaraz's case, the variations of pronounced topspin and drop shots pay off a little less. We'll also have to see the level of his serve. 'Excluding Cincinnati, Alcaraz is ahead 5-2 in their head-to-head matches on hard courts. At the same time, Sinner plays his best on this surface. All things considered, I'd say they'd start on equal terms, especially since their matches are always very close. They're certainly clearly ahead of everyone else; I'd be surprised if they didn't make it to the final, with Jannik's health still a question mark.
