HC raps Delhi PWD for forming Chandni Chowk panel, cites defiance of directive
The Delhi high court on Wednesday took strong exception to the Delhi government's Public Works Department (PWD) for unilaterally constituting a high-level committee to maintain Chandni Chowk, observing that the move was in contravention of the court's earlier directive which had only sought suggestions for such a panel.
A bench of chief justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the Delhi government's counsel to seek instructions on how the PWD issued the order dated March 26 constituting the committee, even though the court had not authorised it.
'We are astonished to note such an order being passed by the government, that too with the approval of the higher authorities in the government,' the court said in its order. It noted that while the March 26 order acknowledged the court's observations from paragraph 12 of its February 18 directive, it 'completely ignores' paragraph 13, which had made it clear that the respondents were only required to provide suggestions and not constitute the committee themselves.
'We request Mr Sameer Vashisht, learned standing counsel for the government, to seek instructions as to how the order dated 26.03.2025 has been passed, which appears to be in contravention of the order of the Court, dated 18.02.2025,' the bench added.
The issue arose from a petition filed by the Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal, which sought immediate steps by city authorities to remove damage, deficiencies, and illegal activities in and around the Chandni Chowk Redevelopment Project — from Subhash Marg (Lal Quila Road) up to Fatehpuri Masjid, including areas near the Chandni Chowk Metro station.
The petitioner argued that there was a complete lack of coordination among the authorities, leading to mismanagement and undermining the over ₹140 crore already spent on the project. The plea also highlighted the inconvenience being caused to the public due to the alleged neglect.
On February 18, the high court had indicated its intent to constitute a committee comprising senior officials from various agencies, including the PWD, MCD, and Delhi Police. The court had remarked that Chandni Chowk was not just a commercial hub but also of 'historical importance', attracting lakhs of tourists from around the world.
The matter is scheduled to be heard next on Thursday.

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Friday granted relief to CLAT-PG candidates over alleged discrepancies in the answer key and directed the consortium of NLUs to declare results soon. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela's decision came over the plea of students in relation to a couple of answers in the key. The court, however, rejected the objection with respect to the declared answer to a third question, and asked the consortium of national law universities (NLUs) to accordingly award marks to the candidates. The court passed the order while deciding three pleas seeking rectification of errors in the final answer key of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-PG 2025. The bench's verdict highlighted the issue of a high fee of Rs 1,000 charged by the consortium per question for raising the objection to the provisional answer key, observing there ought to be a 'fine balance' between the concerns of the candidates and the institutions. While comparing the fee charged for objected questions by other organisations, the fees sought by the consortium 'appeared to be excessive and disproportionate' but the consortium's concern that it was required to keep frivolous individuals and coaching institutes at bay also did not appear to be 'fanciful or imaginative', it added. The bench, however, expected the consortium to take heed of its observations and take appropriate steps to 'avoid such excessive fee in the next examinations'. 'It may be advisable for the consortium to place this issue before the committee headed by Justice G. Raghuram (retd) for his valuable opinion which may be adhered to by it,' the bench said. The court ruled on the correctness of the answers in the answer key after considering each question and the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioners and the consortium. CLAT determines admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in national law universities in the country. CLAT PG 2025 was held on December 1, 2024. Multiple pleas were filed in different high courts alleging several questions in the exam were wrong. On February 6, the Supreme Court transferred all the petitions over the issue to the Delhi High Court for a 'consistent adjudication'. The top court passed the direction on the transfer petitions of the consortium.

NEET-PG to be held on Aug 3 in single shift
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences to reschedule the NEET-PG exam to August 3, 2025. A bench comprising Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Augustine George Masih allowed the application filed by the NBE for extension of time to conduct the NEET exam till August 3, 2025. On May 30, the Supreme Court, while ordering the NBE to hold NEET-PG 2025 in single shift instead of two shifts, had directed it to conduct the exam on the initially scheduled date of June 15, 2025. At the same time, the Court had allowed the NBE to seek extension of time. Later, on June 3, the NBE filed an application seeking extension of time, saying that it needs to increase the number of centres by two-fold (from 450 to 900) and that security arrangements have to be done. The NBE also said that, even according to their technology partner TCS, August 3 is the nearest available date to conduct NEET. During the hearing, the bench initially questioned the NBE, asking why time was needed till August 3. The counsel for the NBE explained that the exam was initially proposed to be held in 450 centres with over 2.5 lakh candidates. Since the Court has directed the holding of exam in one shift, the number of centres will have to be doubled. The counsel said that it will take time to identify the centres and to ensure security arrangements.

75 Delhi govt schools to get PM Shri tag, smart upgrades
The Delhi government will relaunch 75 of its schools as CM-Shri schools with state-of-the-art infrastructure and experiential learning models, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. The initiative aims to transform the quality of education in government schools by blending modern technology with improved facilities. The CM, addressing a meeting with school principals and education department officials in Shalimar Bagh, said the revamped schools will feature thousands of smart classrooms, 100 language labs, and 125 digital libraries by the end of the year. The city government currently runs 1,060 schools, and the 75 CM-Shri campuses will be chosen from among these, based on their readiness for infrastructure and technological upgrades. 'Every child in Delhi deserves quality education. Our aim isn't merely to build schools, but to create an education system that plays a vital role in nation-building. These 75 CM-Shri Schools are a step towards delivering learning that surpasses even private institutions,' Gupta said. The criteria for selecting the 75 schools are still being finalised, but will likely hinge on the existing infrastructure, an official said. The CM also directed that basic amenities like clean toilets, drinking water, proper lighting, and comfortable seating be upgraded across its 1,060 schools on a need basis. She instructed the PWD's horticulture wing to green campuses with landscaping initiatives. Each CM-Shri school will also be equipped with smart boards, science and computer labs, and other digital tools. Emphasising the importance of teacher quality, Gupta announced regular training programmes and exposure to modern teaching methods. The CM further directed officials to provide targeted support for meritorious, underperforming, and differently abled students, ensuring inclusive education. She also announced laptops for 1,200 students who excelled in Class 10 and 12 board exams, and said the government is actively seeking CSR partnerships to bolster the initiative. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has opened applications for transfers to CM-Shri schools for the 2025-26 session. Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), Primary Teachers (PRTs), and other staff with at least five years remaining before retirement can apply by June 9 via email. Interviews will be held on June 11 (TGTs) and June 12 (PGTs and others). An official said the National Education Policy (NEP) will be implemented across CM-Shri schools, alongside the integration of AI tools and language labs. Gupta, meanwhile, took aim at the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, calling its education model 'artificial.' 'Despite the heavy propaganda, the ground reality was dismal. Even their most celebrated school buildings were poorly built — one constructed in 2018 deteriorated within two years. This exposes their so-called model as nothing more than a facade,' she said, adding that legal action would be initiated for irregularities in classroom construction flagged in the CAG report.
