College football betting, odds, lines: My best bets for Week 0

Yahoo4 hours ago
Week 0 may not carry the pageantry of a full Saturday slate, but it delivers something just as important: early value. From Ireland to Honolulu, the first handful of college football games gives us a glimpse at new faces, new systems, and — most importantly — lines that could shift fast.
Kansas State's Heisman hopeful, QB Avery Johnson, headlines across the Atlantic, Kansas tests its ceiling in the Big 12 race, Stanford is suddenly an underdog at Hawaii and two fresh offensive systems collide in Bowling Green.
College football is finally back. Here is my breakdown of a few big Week 0 games and my favorite bets for the opening week:
Kansas State (-3, 49.5) vs. Iowa State in Dublin
Prediction: Kansas State 24, Iowa State 21
The season kicks off in Dublin, where Kansas State and Iowa State renew a rivalry that hasn't lacked drama. The Wildcats arrive with Johnson, the Heisman hopeful and my preseason pick to make a run at the trophy. Iowa State counters with momentum of its own, coming off an 11-3 season capped by a bowl win over Miami.
Last year, the Cyclones disrupted Johnson with pressure, holding him to a 43% completion rate. Still, Kansas State managed three passing scores and nearly four yards per carry on the ground. The difference this time? The Wildcats upgraded their offensive line — a unit that should tilt this rematch.
A year ago this matchup closed with Iowa State -2.5 at home. With the game shifted to a neutral site and K-State boasting improvements up front, the Wildcats are better positioned to edge it out.
Best bet: Avery Johnson over 47.5 rushing yards (-114)
Fresno State at Kansas (-12.5, 50.5)
Prediction: Kansas 31, Fresno State 19
Kansas enters 2025 with the roster to push into Big 12 contention. The key, as always, is quarterback Jalon Daniels' health. With Daniels active, the Jayhawks can stretch defenses at every level; with him sidelined, the gap to backup Cole Ballard is glaring. The good news: Daniels is healthy.
Fresno State starts over with transfer QB EJ Warner, a quick-release passer who inherits a patchwork offense filled with JUCO additions. Against a Kansas defense that creates consistent pressure, Warner's debut could be a rough introduction.
If Daniels stays upright, the Jayhawks should have little trouble handling a rebuilding Bulldogs roster.
Best bet: Pass
Stanford at Hawaii (-2.5, 50.5)
Prediction: Stanford 27, Hawaii 24
Few lines have swung harder than this one. Stanford opened as a 4-point favorite, but the line has flipped and the Cardinal are now 2.5-point underdogs in Honolulu. The fade is easy to understand: Stanford projects as the ACC's bottom feeder, while Hawaii has flashed progress under Timmy Chang.

QB Micah Alejado showed late-season promise, pairing accuracy with mobility to breathe life into Hawaii's scheme. But for all the excitement, Stanford still has enough size in the trenches to compete. The passing may not be there for Stanford, but its ability to run the football should keep it in it. If the number keeps climbing toward the Rainbow Warriors, the value may swing back toward the Cardinal.
Best bet: Micah Ford over 41.5 rushing yards -(114)
Sam Houston at Western Kentucky (-10.5, 61.5)
Prediction: Western Kentucky 33, Sam Houston 26
At first glance, this game looks like filler — but the coaching turnover makes it fascinating.
Western Kentucky tapped former Abilene Christian coach Keith Patterson, who brought along record-setting QB Maverick McIvor (8,000-plus career passing yards). McIvor inherits an offense that's been retooled through the transfer portal.
Sam Houston counters with Phil Longo, the veteran coordinator whose Air Raid has lit up plenty of FBS scoreboards. But history says brand-new systems rarely click in Week 0, and inefficiency could stall drives early.
Oddsmakers have set the total at 61.5, but my numbers project a slower start before the fireworks arrive.
Best bet: Sam Houston vs Western Kentucky under 61.5 (-110)

Florida football QB DJ Lagway named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list

The hype around Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway just keeps building. The sophomore was officially named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list, joining 101 other college football players as early contenders for one of the sport's top honors. For a player barely entering his second season in Gainesville, it's another sign that Lagway is quickly becoming one of the most-talked-about quarterbacks in the country. The award was established in 2012 to recognize the best offensive player in Division I football with strong ties to Texas. It's named after Hall of Famer Earl Campbell, a Tyler native who dominated with the Texas Longhorns and became the school's first Heisman Trophy winner back in 1977. Lagway, a former star at Willis High School just north of Houston, more than qualifies—and he's one of 31 quarterbacks on this year's preseason list. Lagway's freshman year made Florida fans believers Lagway's first year with the Orange and Blue wasn't just promising, it was record-setting. He appeared in all 12 games, starting seven, and guided the Gators to a 6-1 record when he was the starter. That kind of immediate impact helped Florida finish 8-5 in what many expected to be a difficult season under Billy Napier. Lagway threw for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns, completing nearly 60 percent of his passes while adding 101 rushing yards. He also tied Chris Leak's program record for most wins by a true freshman quarterback and led all FBS true freshmen with a 154.9 passer rating. Those numbers, combined with his leadership, have Gator Nation buzzing about what's to come this season. What's ahead for Lagway and the award race The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award process trims down as the season unfolds, with semifinalists announced in November and finalists revealed in December. A committee of broadcasters, journalists, former players and fans will select the winner. Andrew Luck's return to Stanford football aims to revive struggling program

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Frank Reich has the title of interim coach for Stanford's football team after being hired in the spring to replace the fired Troy Taylor. The man in charge of getting the Cardinal back to their winning ways is clearly Andrew Luck. The former star quarterback was hired this year as general manager of the football program, tasked with everything from recruiting to fund-raising to on-field coaching to generating fan interest in a languishing program. 'We've had a lot of fun working together, but really it started to shine even more once we got out there for training camp," Reich said. 'Him being out on the field as much as he was and letting the team feel his presence on the field and in the meeting room. He'd pick his spots to address the team. I just felt like it had a major impact. When he's out on the field, you just feel his presence and I think it really lifts the whole program.' Luck was hired to revitalize a program that is coming off four straight 3-9 seasons. He fired Taylor in March after reports that Taylor had allegedly mistreated staffers became public. Luck then brought his former coach on the Indianapolis Colts back to college on an interim basis, hoping to rebuild the winning culture the program had when Luck was a player. 'We talked about a vision of something he was looking to create for Stanford football for not just something in the future, but something for the 2025 season,' Reich said. 'He and I have talked a lot about that. Players are bought in and they understand. They're smart guys. They understand the culture in the locker room." QB battle After last year's top two quarterbacks, Ashton Daniels and Justin Lamson, transferred, the Cardinal had a summer competition at quarterback that was won by Oregon State transfer Ben Gulbranson. Gulbranson played 18 games with 12 starts for the Beavers, completing 61.8% of his passes for 2,648 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Gulbranson went 7-1 as a starter in 2022, throwing a 56-yard TD pass to Tre'Shaun Harrison with 13 seconds left to beat the Cardinal 28-27 at Stanford Stadium. Gulbranson beat out redshirt freshman Elijah Brown, who threw 48 passes in limited action last season. Transfer portal Gulbranson is one of a school-record 17 transfers that joined the program this offseason as the administration has given the football program more leeway to add players from the portal. The biggest additions outside of quarterback are at offensive line, where UCLA transfer Niki Prongos is slated to start at left tackle and Texas Tech transfer Nick Fattig is slated to start at left guard, and receiver, led by Wisconsin transfer C.J. Williams. Fitting in Reich got hired on March 31 and inherited the staff that includes Andy Thompson, who was hired by Taylor in December as co-defensive coordinator after the two worked together previously at Sacramento State. Thompson will work with Bobby April to run the defense, while Reich will run the offense. 'It is a unique situation to kind of come in and inherit a staff,' Reich said. 'Little bit awkward, but it's a credit to these guys because A, they're really good coaches and B, good men. So, feel like we've been able to come in, collaborate together, really understand, hey, it's unique situation. But we are so determined as a staff to want to put these players in the best position possible." Road warriors Stanford's second season in the ACC will feature a staggering amount of travel with games in five time zone, including a trip to Hawaii and three to the East Coast. According to the website Bookies(dot)com, the Cardinal will travel more than 23,500 miles this season — more than triple the average of the other 16 ACC teams. 'I think for us just being smart about it,' cornerback Collin Wright said. "We have so many resources, different things we use on the plane and to keep our body moving, keep our blood flowing. I think we have a great support staff that gives us all those resources. The schedule Stanford opens the season early with a trip to Hawaii on Saturday before getting a week off in what is Week 1 for most teams. The nonconference schedule features a trip to BYU on Sept. 6 and a season-ending home game against No. 6 Notre Dame. The conference schedule features road games in October against preseason Top 25 teams SMU (No. 16) and Miami (No. 10) as well as the Big Game at home against California on Nov. 22. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
