Kelowna rubber duck race raises funds for free swimming lessons for kids

Rubber ducks are hard to resist. From their tail to their bill, there is just something about them. Now, the yellow toys are being used in a YMCA fundraiser to help get more youngsters swimming. 'It's $25 to purchase a duck, and every purchase goes towards a child's swim lesson,' said Tammie Watson, vice-president of marketing and philanthropy at YMCA Southern Interior. The YMCA of Southern Interior BC is on a mission to drown-proof the Okanagan by providing all Grade 3 students in School District 23 free swimming lessons. 'It is 100 per cent community funded, so we are trying to raise $57,000. Currently, as of [Wednesday], we are at $37,000, so we are almost there,' said Watson. The program has been running since 2012, and so far, about 16,000 kids have gone through it, all of whom live near the so-called 'Deadliest Lake' in the province. In a report, the B.C. Coroners Service states there were 28 accidental drownings over the past decade in Okanagan Lake. Story continues below advertisement 'We are breaking down barriers to ensure that every child can remain safe in the Okanagan,' said Watson. The importance of teaching kids in Kelowna to swim is echoed by Kimiko Hirakida, at Lifesaving Society BC & Yukon. 'It's almost more important that they learn these basic skills, and I think that being able to offer free swimming opportunities is incredibly important to reach those who may not be able to get into our recreation centres,' said Hirakida. The deadline to adopt a duck for the Make a Splash fundraiser is Friday, and the big duck race on the lazy river at H20 Adventure & Fitness Centre takes place Saturday.

‘Feisty' 6-pound Pomeranian chases black bear from West Vancouver home

Scout may be a small Pomeranian, but he has a big personality and didn't hesitate to scare off a much bigger intruder in his home. He is all of six pounds, including the fluff, but under the tawny coat of adorableness is the soul of a savage defender. 'He's the best. He's super cuddly and affectionate but he's really feisty and really protective of me and my husband,' owner Kayla Kleine told Global News. On Aug. 4, the West Vancouver resident was home with her little defender and the door open in an effort to beat the heat. Her camera captures a curious black bear wandering into the home, checking out the TV before helping himself to Scout's breakfast. Then, without warning, Scout comes flying out of a side room, barking at the bear, chasing it away. Kleine follows closely behind, yelling at Scout to come to her but the next camera angle shows the bear fleeing down the garden steps, Scout closely behind, barking all the way. Story continues below advertisement 'He came sprinting around the corner, and I just saw the bear running out of our kitchen and he chased it out of the house,' Kleine told Global News. And ran to the backyard and he had already chased it up the fence and the bear was on the other side of the fence and he was just barking at it.' 0:52 Bear steals Costco-sized M&Ms container out of B.C. man's truck Perhaps Scout was angry that the bear had eaten his breakfast. 'I was surprised but he's also scary when he's mad so I could see him going full speed at the bear,' Klein added. She said bears do wander through the area frequently but has never had one enter the home before. Story continues below advertisement She said she will probably be keeping the door shut going forward but she still has Scout to defend her and her family. 'He's got a lot of personality… I was so proud of him; he was so brave.'
