Spa-ctular loss: Wellness outlets vanish along with RM700,000 customer funds
The company allegedly offered attractive treatment packages that could be redeemed at any of its outlets nationwide.
Victims claimed they paid in advance based on the number of sessions chosen.
However, the customers only realised they had been duped when they could no longer contact the company to set appointments.
It was later discovered that the business had quietly shut down all its outlets without notice.
Johor police chief, Commissioner Datuk M. Kumar confirmed Johor police received 130 reports since early May, involving losses totalling RM698,155.67.
"The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said today.
The offence carries a jail term of one to 10 years, caning, and a fine, upon conviction.
Investigations are ongoing.
Yesterday, MCA Youth Complaints and Public Service bureau head, Heng Zhi Li, held a press conference at its headquarters here.
He said 54 victims came forward seeking help for the party with their predicament.
They alleged each paid between RM2,400 and RM10,000 for treatment packages with the spa, after they were lured by social media advertisements.
However, when they attempted to book appointments, they were told that were no slots available.
Heng believes total victims could number in the thousands, as the spa had dozens of outlets in Johor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang.
Earlier this month, the owner posted a video citing staff shortages and cash flow problems.
He added 28 outlets have since shut down, and calls to the owner went unanswered.
Some victims have lodged complaints with the Consumer Claims Tribunal. A hotline (011-6251 5678) has been set up for others to come forward.

Siblings drown in unfenced construction pond site in Ipoh
IPOH: Two siblings were found drowned in a water retention pond located within an unfenced construction site in Lebuh Perindustrian Sin Yong Seng, Taman Chemor Ria, here yesterday. The boys, aged eight and nine, had reportedly gone out to play near their rented home, which is adjacent to the construction area, before the tragedy occurred. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said authorities received an emergency call via MERS 999 at 8.33pm yesterday. He said initial information indicated that members of the public had discovered two unconscious children in the pond. "Both victims were immediately rushed to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) for emergency treatment, but were unfortunately pronounced dead at 9.39pm on the same night," he said when contacted tonight. He added that an initial investigation at the scene revealed the construction site was not secured with fencing, and no warning signage was displayed to alert the public of potential hazards. "A post-mortem conducted at HRPB's forensic unit confirmed that the cause of death was drowning," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001, which pertains to child negligence and is punishable by a fine of up to RM20,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both. He advised the public to always prioritise children's safety, especially when near high-risk areas such as rivers, ponds, mining pools, or construction sites. "Developers and contractors are also reminded to comply with safety regulations, including installing fencing and warning signs at construction sites to prevent unwanted incidents. Mistaken for animal: Octogenarian fined RM6,000 over fatal shooting in Serian

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali convicted Mangkok Mawa on his own guilty plea to a charge of causing death by negligence, framed under Section 304A of the Penal Code; and a charge of possessing a firearm without a permit, framed under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960. For the first charge under Section 304A, the accused was fined RM4,000 in default five months' jail, while for the second charge under Section 8(a), he was fined RM2,000 in default three months' imprisonment. He committed the offence at around 10am on July 23 at Kampung Engkeroh Mawang in Tebakang, Serian. Based on the facts of the case, police received a report from the public about a 52-year-old woman who had been shot dead in the village, and arrested Mangkok at about 2.40pm the same day. Seized from him were a shotgun, one spent cartridge, and a box containing nine live cartridges. Investigations revealed the accused was hunting squirrels in an orchard behind his house when he opened fire after mistaking the victim for an animal moving in the bushes.
