Johor police receive 130 reports over wellness package scam totaling RM698,000
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police have received 130 reports from individuals who claimed they were cheated by a health and wellness company, 38 Speed Relax and Wellness, with total losses amounting to RM698,155.67. State police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the victims had purchased packages priced according to the number of treatments selected, with services supposedly available at any of the company's outlets nationwide, at any time. 'However, the victims only realised they had been duped when they could no longer contact the company to schedule appointments. They later discovered that all of the company's outlets had ceased operations without any prior notice,' he said in a statement today. Kumar said investigations are ongoing under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term between one and 10 years, with whipping, and a possible fine, upon conviction. Earlier, media reports stated that over 1,000 customers had alleged they were scammed after a health and beauty centre operating 28 outlets nationwide abruptly shut down. MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chairman Heng Zhi Li was quoted as saying the company's sudden closure left many customers unable to redeem the services they had already paid for in full.

JOHOR BARU, May 12 — Johor police today confirmed receiving 130 alleged fraud complaints about a spa and wellness company here whose customers claim to have lost over RM690,000 so far. State police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the reports began surfacing earlier this month. 'We confirm that we have received reports from the victims who claim to have been cheated by the spa and wellness company,' he said in a media statement. 'So far, 130 police reports have been lodged at the Johor police contingent since early May with a total loss of RM698,155.67,' he added. Kumar said early investigations found victims were offered prepaid treatment packages based on the number of sessions, redeemable at outlets nationwide. 'The victims later found out that the company had already ceased operations at all outlets without any notification,' he added. He confirmed that police are investigating the company identified as '38 Speed Relax & Wellness', under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. MCA Youth complaints and public service department head Heng Zhi Li told the media previously that it had been approached by numerous customers for help. He disclosed that many signed up for the company's packages ranging from RM2,400 to RM10,000 with monthly payments between RM288 and RM388, only to discover later that they were unable to set appointments for treatments.

Spa-ctacular loss: Wellness outlets vanish along with RM700,000 in customers' funds
JOHOR BARU: Some 130 police reports have been lodged in Johor against a wellness company accused of defrauding customers across the country, with total reported losses nearing RM700,000. The company allegedly offered attractive treatment packages that could be redeemed at any of its outlets nationwide. Victims claimed they paid in advance based on the number of sessions chosen. However, the customers only realised they had been duped when they could no longer contact the company to set appointments. It was later discovered that the business had quietly shut down all its outlets without notice. Johor police chief, Commissioner Datuk M. Kumar confirmed Johor police received 130 reports since early May, involving losses totalling RM698,155.67. "The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating," he said today. The offence carries a jail term of one to 10 years, caning, and a fine, upon conviction. Yesterday, MCA Youth Complaints and Public Service bureau head, Heng Zhi Li, held a press conference at its headquarters here. He said 54 victims came forward to seek help from the party to resolve their predicament. They claimed to have paid between RM2,400 and RM10,000 for treatment packages after being lured by social media advertisements. However, when they attempted to book appointments, they were told that there were no slots available. Heng believes total victims could number in the thousands, as the spa had dozens of outlets in Johor, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang. Earlier this month, the spa owner posted a video saying that his business was facing staff shortages and cash flow problems. Heng said 28 outlets had since shut down, and calls to the owner went unanswered.
