Marlins hold off late Padres' rally in 4-3 win
MIAMI (AP) — Rookie Agustin Ramirez had two hits and scored two runs, and the Miami Marlins held on to beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Kyle Stowers doubled and drove in a run while Heriberto Hernandez singled twice and had an RBI for the Marlins.
Miami starter Edward Cabrera (4-4) scattered five hits and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. It was Cabrera's first outing since July 11 as his initial appearance following the All-Star break was delayed while he dealt with elbow discomfort.
Stowers' RBI double capped a two-run first against Padres starter Stephen Kolek (3-5). Otto Lopez put Miami on the board when he scored from third on a throwing error by San Diego third baseman Manny Machado.
The Padres narrowed the deficit on Luis Arraez's run-scoring single in the third before Hernández hit an RBI single off in the sixth and Javier Sanoja added a run-scoring triple in the eighth to pad the Marlins' lead to 4-1.
Cade Gibson relieved Cabrera and got the next four outs. Anthony Bender followed with a perfect eighth before closer Ronny Henriquez ran into trouble in the ninth.
Gavin Sheets drew a leadoff walk against Henriquez and advanced on Xander Bogaerts' double. Jackson Merrill followed with a two-run double t make it 4-3. Henriquez retired Jake Cronenworth on a pop out, struck out Jose Iglesias and got his sixth save when pinch hitter Trenton Brooks popped out.

Cabrera's outing ended after he sprinted from the mound and fielded Bogaerts' dribbler to throw Arraez out at the plate as he attempted to score from third. Key stat

That season he posted a .314 batting average, 19 home runs and 84 RBIs. He won his second Gold Glove and first Silver Slugger that year as well. He led the NL in runs (114), triples (19), was second in hits (200) and third in doubles (36). Associated Press PITTSBURGH (AP) — Looking to fortify their bullpen for the stretch run, the New York Yankees agreed to acquire two-time All-Star closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates a few hours ahead of baseball's trade deadline Thursday. New York was set to send catcher/first base prospect Rafael Flores, catcher Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez to the Pirates in exchange for Bednar, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a review of medical information and had not been announced. Tigers Bolster Bullpen, Rotation With Flurry of Deadline Trades For Pitchers
The Detroit Tigers seem to be setting themselves up to potentially go back to what manager A.J. Hinch calls pitching chaos. Detroit bolstered its bullpen, and options in games without a traditional starting pitcher, with a series of moves to add a trio of right-handers in the hours before the trade deadline on Thursday. The Tigers acquired Washington's Kyle Finnegan, Cleveland's Paul Sewald and Texas minor leaguer Codi Heuer for prospects and cash. Detroit made the trades — and one earlier this week — hoping to increase its chances of winning a World Series for the first time in more than four decades. The AL Central-leading Tigers won their fourth straight game with newly acquired starting pitcher Chris Paddack on Wednesday, two days after he was added in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. The hope with Paddack is that he can perform closer to his adjusted run averages, rather than his ERA. Wednesday's outing was a step in the right direction, with Paddack throwing six innings with one run allowed against the Diamondbacks. Detroit has nearly a double-digit game lead in a division suddenly filled with rebuilding teams, including the defending AL Central-champion Guardians, and is vying with Toronto and Houston for the best record in the league. The Tigers, trying to take advantage of ace Tarik Skubal and a balanced lineup, are aiming for their first World Series title since 1984, and a deeper push than last summer's surprise postseason squad. The 33-year-old Finnegan was an All-Star in 2024, but his velocity has been down this season. He has 20 saves with a 4.38 ERA in 2025. In the trade for Finnegan, the Tigers sent minor league pitchers Josh Randall and R.J. Sales, Detroit's third and 10th round draft picks from 2024, respectively, to Washington. The 35-year-old Sewald is eligible to return from the injured list on Sunday after being shut down with a strained right shoulder, but he isn't expected to pitch until September.
